Re:1st ever (as far as I know) liquid cooled ps3 in a computer case 2011/03/28 18:14:28 (permalink)
So I got the Thermaltake Flow TX Plus in today, and I ran into a slight snag. I assumed Thermaltake was using standard G1/4 fittings for the flow meter, but alas, I was wrong. Why they're using NPT 1/4 is beyond me (probably just to make my life difficult). So now I have to wait for 2x Koolance NPT 1/4 male to G1/4 female adapters to arrive (just ordered this evening). I can't use Thermaltake's fittings because I need 90 degree fittings for how I'm mounting the flow meter (it'll look cool).

I went ahead and mounted the digital gauge on the front panel. It looks sweet, but when I tried popping the front panel back on the case, the USB heads were slightly in the way. So I have 3 FlexUSB adapters on order to correct that.

Once I get everything in and take some pictures, it'll all make sense if you're still left wondering.

Here's some early pics of the Digital Temp/Alarm Meter. I'll be adding to the DIY once it's all complete. Also, the meter's screen looks kinda hazey cuz I haven't removed the protective film yet:

The flow meter started leaking again after a few minutes of the pump running. I decided to ditch the flow meter, but use the temperature probe. I modded my res/pump for the probe.

30min at idle (temp reading is the bottom one):

30min after playing Gran Turismo 5:

Not too shabby.

Great job!

One thing.  I don't think having the temp probe in the reservoir is a good idea, if the pump stops it will take a long time for heat to migrate back to the reservoir.  But, it is nice to monitor how the games are affecting your loop temp.

Maybe mount the probe directly to the CPU water block.

Anyone know if the PS3 CPU has built in high-temp s/d like normal cpus?

The flow meter has the temp sensor built into it. The threading on one of the fittings stripped when I was replacing it with a 90 degree swivel barb. It looks like Thermaltake uses a glue on the threading so it broke.

I originally had the meter in the line right after the processor/gpu running into the rad. But since the meter was leaking (even after using construction adhesive to try and save it), I had no choice but to mod the temp meter into the res/pump. I don't want to try a new flow meter from Thermaltake cuz the fittings are absolute crap.

I did, however note the idle temp when the meter was still in the original spot, and it read 32c. So all things being equal, 28c idle temp in the res = 32c after the processor/gpu
36c gaming in the res = 40c after the processor/gpu

blacksapphire08

mod. I noticed it's a fat PS3 and I remember those things ran REALLY hot. I have a newer slim model and it doesnt get hot but the drive is kinda crappy, would be cool if you could stick a faster blu ray drive in these. Next mod?

Not really a mod, but I have to repair my 40" Samsung LCD TV. I gotta solder new capacitors to the cold side of the power supply board. The stock caps were extremely prone to failure, and it's causing my tv to cycle through power-up for about 60 seconds.....Should be a recall if you ask me, but it's just another case of a major corp not wanting to fess up to their mistakes.

If it's not one thing, it's another!

Hey how is that ps3 doing? I have one that has been reflowed twice and is prone to have the YLOD again. I have to reflow it every month or so. It keeps breaking. Im thinking about going this route instead of trashing it.

So far so good...the hottest temperature recorded, thus far, was 40.1c when I played some COD: Black Ops online for about an hour....I'm wondering how much lower the temps would be if I had a 240mm rad w/4 Scythe Ultra Kaze fans.

I have that same case for my recording rig in the studio. I applaud the mod work itself but I never understood modding a console. Isn't that what a pc is??? I mean, if you want better graphics and stuff from a ps3, you buy a computer... right? Very cool though. If I had to play a PS3 and it was overheating, I would probably rubber band 2 laptop coolers on each side and call it good but I'm lazy.

I love this type of stuff even though I don't play counsels.  It shows the small "ebb" in the flow of technology.  Companies spend millions making new products smaller, cheaper, and quiter; then their are a small percentage of people who ultimately make them bigger, louder, and more expensive in the name of performance.

Great job!

Haha, it's a good thing they do, because if they didn't keep making these products smaller all the modders would be building room size rigs! I for one am glad technology has gone FAR past the age of vacuum tubes

Nice mod, interesting that you got a slight performance boost from this. Probably a sign of CPU throttling due to temperature issues before, which makes me wonder if they all do that... (looks at roomate's ps3 fiendishly)

Mix a little Prestone  Dex-cool with your distilled water + silver coil for extreme protection against any and all corrosion. I just started using it in my CPU Loop after reading all the info on it at the Watercooling pro forums. Now I don't have to worry about any corrosion or algae buildup. Dex-cool+Distilled for Corrosion, Silver coil for Algae/Bacteria. I used about a 80% distilled 20% dex-cool mixture. Great thing about it is its only 14 bucks for like a gallon of dex-cool, and since you only use an 80/20 mix, it will last forever. If it works for a dirty nasty car, then a PC is definitely no problem.

Might have to give it a whirl....aside from the anti-corrosion properties, did you notice any increase in cooling capabilities?

Better than Water Cooling who ever is looking for a other solution is to have your PS3 reballed, which replaces the solder that has cracked.Because they replace the solder with lead which has memory (Will go back to its shape when cooled) .
Re flowing allows the cracks in the solder to fill again with the same solder which eventually will crack again(Crappy environmentally Solder ).

Much better than spending $400 on Water cooling rather than $60 for a permanent solution.

So to anyone with a PS3(YLOD) have it reballed pronto.
-Look on ebay or search your area for people who do this for a living.

Actually, anything other than pure distilled water will decrease the cooling capabilities. Pure Distilled water is the best. I read Feser 1 has a product called "Heat Carrier", which is supposedly better than water.

Exactly 3 months now since I did this mod and it's still going. Just played L.A. Noire for a long time last night (you can easily lose track of time playing that game) and the temp never went above 36c.

I added five 40mm fans to my rig to compensate for the change in ambient temperature for the summer. There was a 7c difference between winter (18c) and summer (25c) temps. I bought Startech's 5.25 HDD fan kit (which comes with two 40mm Evercool fans rated at 9cfm). I also bought three 40mm Evercool 12000rpm (19cfm rated) fans. I used the 2 fans the kit came with to push air toward the PSU and out the exhaust fan. I used the other 3 for the Startech shroud as exhaust to suck the heat generated from the cpu/gpu out. This mod took about 2 hours. I had to use my multitool grinder quite a bit to get the Startech shroud flush with the faceplate. Then I didn't have the right length screws for the 3 fans so I had to file the ones I did have on hand down a tad. Results are worth the effort and $$$. Idle temp is hovering around 28c (vs. 32c without). I was downloading/installing for about one hour when I took the picture, and it's been steady at 32.5-9c (vs. 35c). Haven't tested gaming on it yet.

Does anyone know how I could possibly rig the computer psu to turn on when turning on the ps3?

I'm always worried that someday somehow the ps3 will turn on without the computer psu being turned on first.

Is it still working? How many hours do you play on it? My brother plays like 6 hours a day on that thing and it just burned up. So I now have 2 YLOD ps3's (one was given to me by a friend). Both have been fixed with a heat gun a few times. I am looking for a more permanent fix. Possibly re-balling or liquid cooling, or both.

Yeah, its still going strong. The only "oh crap" moment happened to me about 1 month ago shortly after getting L.A. Noire. I had been playing for about 2 hours and the temp was reading 36c (which means temps in the loop after the processor and gpu were probably somewhere around 40-42c). This normally isn't a problem, but my PS3 suddenly shut off without warning. I let it cool down completely before restarting. When I did, everything was fine. I believe one of the memory chips may have overheated and triggered the PS3 to shut off (I seem to remember not being able to find one of the heatsink pads after ripping the thing apart and doing this project). I may decide to "upgrade" to copper heatsinks for the memory chips.....but this 'hickup' only happened to me that one time.

If I had to guess, I probably play about 6-12 hours per week on it.

It's hitting the 4 month mark with no YLOD.
