My other threads are dead so this is a follow up on this and this. I found out why my GTX 480 kept crashing. The factory set "superclock" on the card is unstable. When I lower the shader clock to 1401 and the memory clock to 1800 I don't crash at all no matter how long I game. When those settings are on default I crash after 10+ minutes on Just Cause 2 and other games. At the slightly lower settings it's as solid as a rock. I tested my PSU's 12v rails that are plugged into my card (6 and 8 pin) with a multimeter and it never goes below 12.15v and never above 12.17v when under 100% load on the GPU and CPU. I reinstalled Windows to be sure there wasn't a driver issue then installed the latest Nvidia drivers removing the hdaudio and 3d executables before installation. I also optimized my bios settings to be sure everything is set correctly with my RAM and CPU synced and linked. Should I RMA this card since it can't handle the factory set superclock or should I install E-Leet and mess with the settings first? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thank you.

Yes indeed, EVGA have an excellent RMA system.

At the very least start a support ticket......

Check your bios version.. i had a superclocked with the bios ending on .80, And I couldn't see or alter the bios voltage and that impacted on stability (Artifacts), maybe its that, check your voltage's.

When i was on 3D the voltage stayed in the 2D profile, and sometimes it was on 0.00 vddc (don't really know why, maybe a bad bios)

I Flashed my card to a newer Bios (.84), and everything was solved...

In GPU-Z it says the bios version is 70.00.21.00.80. Would updating the GPU bios void the warranty in any way? If a bios update will fix my problem I'd like to try that (so I don't have to send the card back and not have this PC for a week).

Well you maybe have the same issue i had, why don't you try flashing the bios... and no you don't void the warranty if you put an EVGA bios on it... i asked before doing it to Jacob, so no problem at all, if you need any help you can PM me, i can send you my Bios 70.00.21.00.84

You know how to flash the bios?

Hope you can fix this!

I've been googling for the flasing process but I couldn't find much. The NVFlash utility doesn't work with Windows 7. I'll need to make a bootable CD? If you could tell me more about it that'd be great.

I already PM this to ReingFire, but if someone needs info about how to flash their graphic card.

This are the applications you would need.
http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197 To make your flash drive bootlable

http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=196 You need this files to create some Boot disk (win98 files)

http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1893/NVFlash_5.100.0.1.html The NVflash for Dos (VER 5.100.0.1 *updated link)

The process its simple, you need to format your flash drive, selecting on the HP utility to "create a DOS startup disk" and then you select the win98 Files you already download.

When this process it's finished you need to uncompress nvflash on the Flash Drive, and put the bios you want to flash in there too, (i suggest you to use small filenames, 84.rom as an example, so you can access it easier via dos).

The command lines you need to use when you are in NVFlash are this

nvflash -b backup.rom (put the name you want to save your actual rom on the drive, with this line you're saving as "backup.rom")

Now you have to ways to do the next step, erase the current bios first, or overwrite the one you have, I prefer to erase, so i don't have a different checksum

if you select to erase the entire bios from the card, just do this:
nvflash --eraseeeprom, Enter, then the system its going to ask you to put Y to continue the process

and then put the new bios on it
nvflash biosname.rom, press enter, then press Y and you have your card flashed, you can see the progress on the screen,

if you want to bypass the erase bios procedure, and overwrite just do this.
nvflash -r (press enter, and you remove any write protection)
nvflash biosname.rom, press enter, then Y and you have your card flashed, you can see the progress on the screen,

this it's the way I DO IT, i hope this helps you, just read really well before doing it.

I flashed the bios and everything's running smoothly so far. I'll do some extended gaming later to make sure though. The only small problem I'm having now is a little extra heat (around 85C) but that may be due to the extra performance from the bios. My case has great air flow and I ordered a high flow bracket so that'll be okay. I'll let you know if anything happens. Thanks for the help.
