Evga only think you have money and your Ego, a responsible company would at least have already issued a statement (not a bios that does not help) to inform and \ or immediately withdraw cards that make noise, which is a problem amettendo assembly between the board and heatsink, there are many customers who feel noise, some more than others (as in my case), the noise is still there and on a card that is among the most expensive in the market should not exist.

My 780 Classy came with 29% to 100% fan speeds at stock.
The bios update wont have fixed any rattle/humming caused by the cooler.

Got an Classified and need to say that at both BIOs there are those interferences of the fans at different speeds. At mine i got it around 37 47 and that should be all. so at idle it does not appear and if i am gaming i stuck around 63-66% so i do not have that problem with it but there is always a silence interference of it. I think its not a defekt its just because they run close to the same speed and get some vibricy into the huge cooler.

question. why are you guys ramping your fans up past 60% ?

I usually make a custom fan curve but i just left it at auto and my temps are amazing.  heaven benchmark never goes past 67C at stock auto fan speeds and fans never go past 57% are your cards running hotter or ?

I'm not ramping anything up. My fans routinely hit 60% on their own default automatic curve, not that speed seems to matter as I can literally hear this noise at 29% all the way through 100%. There is no point at which I can't hear the noise.

ahh ok. i thought you were only hearing it once it hit a higher rpm. if you're hearing noise no matter what fan speed its set at. i would RMA it.

I am planning on it, however there is no guarantee that I won't just get another card with the same issue. Not only that I will most likely end up having to shell out more money -- as if the initial $800 wasn't enough... I would sell it privately but I don't even really feel comfortable doing that...

EVGA should send me a brand-new card for free and include a pre-paid return shipment package so I can ship their dud back to them, for free. We'll see on Tuesday when I begin the RMA process. Extremely disappointed regardless of what ends up happening with the RMA... this is a huge PITA.

im sure they can work something out with you. and you could ask to exchange it for a stock fan unit? if you have a classy then nvm what i just said but if you have a SC the clocks are a little lower yes but its better than having a card that makes defective noises.

personally, i would return it to where you buy it. newegg? say you got the card and it was damaged. newegg is awesome with return shipping they will send you a pre paid ups lable to send the card back. or are you past the 30 days of buying it?

Bought from NCIX, unfortunately past the 30 day grace-period. I called them 2 days after the 30-day period expired because I had thought the noise was my PSU until I stumbled across this thread which made me go check my 780 for noise and BINGO!

NCIX refused to make an exception and exchange the card for me. So now I'm left to deal with EVGA RMA and cross-border shipments on MY dime. Any fees that they feel like tacking on at the border are my responsibility -- so that means I would probably end up paying taxes/duty/brokerage on the "new" card being sent to me and then I would also be responsible for any fee's they want to tack-on to my shipment back to EVGA. I could end up being burned for another $200+ easily.

That really sucks, man. What about getting a new case instead? There are a lot of Fractals that have the sound dampening stuff. Would be your best route.

I love how we're now discussing options like me buying a new case in order to accommodate a defective product from EVGA. Absurd.

I have a CaseLabs STH10, as if I'm going to go and buy a new case just to accommodate a poorly designed product, making my $700 case useless.

I would sooner take this GPU out on to my street and smash it into pieces with a 20lb sledge and be done with EVGA for good.

well if its going to cost you a crap ton of money sending it to the us and also have to pay for customs fee's for when it comes back,  only option i can think of is either live with the noise, or buy a stock ref cooler. yes you paid for the ACX and it sucks, i have had stuff like this happen before. its stressful.  here are 2 coolers i found on ebay (there not mine just searched for them)  80 bucks is allot imo but if you think shipping is going to cost more then yeah.  OR if you want you could order a new card from ncix and then return the one you have now saying that you changed your mind or its defective.  imo i would not do this, but i guess if you're really desperate. would have to front how much the card is again and be without that $ till you get refund back.

Don't see how it's not defective and I am starting one... nothing I can do right now though, so I have to wait until Tuesday. I need to call them and decide if it's even worth starting an RMA -- I don't want to be on the hook for any more shipping/taxes/brokerage/duties. Now... I don't know if that will actually be the case or not so I'll have wait to find out on Tuesday when talking to customer service.

Just venting in the meantime... frustrating situation.

I guess the rattle could be fixed by moveing the mount on the heatsink for the fan and placing some msall padding between the metal. Just theorizing here.
Though that would mean takign the whole cooler apart.

i finaly got ahold of some IPA solution so i can replace the TIM on my card anytime now, ill see what the cooler looks like up close when i do and update here.

BTW for thos wondering why peopel run high fan speeds. My GPU has to run at around 75% on stock to keep in the 70's, and runs at ~85% with te small OC i have on it to keeparound 75c. I have a hot running card, hence why im replacing the TIM.

Okay my bad too. I thought you were giving me **** for trying to help, lol. I haven't gotten my ACX SC in yet, but this will be the first thing I check, that's for sure. The reviews on newegg are outstanding for the evga acx. It's the highest rated 5 star 780 with no competition even close to it in terms of ratings.

If I were you I'd skip the EVGA (or go for reference cooler version if you must have EVGA) and go for the Asus DCUII or Gigabyte Windforce. Based on your phrasing though I'm guessing it's too late and you already ordered it?

One good point is if a bird flies into the fanblades they are strong enough to break it's beak :)

And yes, mine rattles and drones and resonates as well, maybe the quality control in China is poor.

I have some issue too.
It's not fan noise atcually.
It's rattling sound that fan frame can't hold fans activities..sounds like old fan noise.
it's kinda disappointing.

Re:GTX 780 SC ACX fan noises 2013/09/03 08:51:03 (permalink)
Hi there people!

I have good news. I have solved the rattle problem in my 780 classified ( I think that this should work in regular acx cooler too)!!!

I have taken some photos to show I did it so you can do it too.
First undo the 5 screws that hold the cooler to the card(four in the “center of the picture” and 1 in the left/down side of the picture left to the sli rubber dust cover.

Next slowly rotate the card to separate the card from the cooler

Now, with the cooler of the card pass your finger on the fins of the cooler and find out if are any fins loose that will create the rattle at some rpm of the fans. In my case I find that the fins closer to the monitor ports were very loose. I´m pointing them with my screwdriver.

Them I had some thermal tape around here and decided to hold those fins with the thermal tape.

I cut some of it (0,5cm X 3,5cm) and placed it on the side of the fins were they are “closed” so no airflow would be restricted.

Then I reapplied them tim (I’m trying out the Phobya Nanogrease Extreme and I got 4ºC off my max temp)

And put it all together and the rattle was gone! I tested this with the precision X, seting it to manual and incremented 1% each time( from 29% to 100%) to see if the rattle was gone and it was gone.
I choose this meted to see if it work and it did, but I don’t know if the thermal tape will hold the fins  forever because I don´t know if the resonance is strong enough to dislodge the tape. If it is I might use some adhesive thermal conductive paste to “glue” those fins.

Now I can hear some small noises(very very small and definitely not any rattle) at some rpm I suspect there are some more fins loose, but nothing compared to those that I marked and fix, and I think they are near the power connector to the card. Or the ones that I fixed are still a little loose on the right side of this photo, near the plastic cover:

I hope you all can solve it like I did and if you have any questions just ask. If you try this please tell me if it worked here at this post.

Evga must do a good job to show that customers are important, must offer a sink Arctic to three fans to all customers who have problems with noise, for EVGA costs less a rma and make more beautiful figure

Hi there people!

I have good news. I have solved the rattle problem in my 780 classified ( I think that this shold work in regular acx cooler too)!!!

Doesn't taking the cooler apart void the warranty? I'm not voiding my warranty in an attempt to fix a factory-defective product. Happy for you that were you able to fix yours though I guess.

Hi there people!

I have good news. I have solved the rattle problem in my 780 classified ( I think that this shold work in regular acx cooler too)!!!

I have taken some photos to show I did it so you can do it too.
First undo the 5 screws that hold the cooler to the card(four in the “center of the picture” and 1 in the left/down side of the picture left to the sli rubber dust cover.
[/URL

Next slowly rotate the card to separate the card from the cooler

Now, with the cooler of the card pass your finger on the fins of the cooler and find out if are any fins loose that will create the rattle at some rpm of the fans. In my case I find that the fins closer to the monitor ports were very loose. I´m pointing them with my screwdriver.

Them I had some thermal tape around here and decided to hold those fins with the thermal tape.

I cut some of it (0,5cm X 3,5cm) and placed it on the side of the fins were they are “closed” so no airflow would be restricted.

Them I reapplied them tim (I’m trying out the Phobya Nanogrease Extreme and I got 4ºC off my max temp)

I think this post is useful for everybody who can solve the cooler fan problem!!! I hope EVGA technical will review your post!! it great idea to help EVGA technical can improve with cooler fan!!!!
Unless you did careful remove the cooler case and re apply thermal pasta again!!! That main point you didn't damage the card thought!!! You are on still warranty thought

No you will not loose warranty if you re apply thermal pasta or clean up the duct inside the card heat sink!!! it will loose warranty if you have modify GPU BIOS by yourself or Download Update BIOS from other site which not from EVGA site!!!
I hope this more clean understand for you!!!!

In that case, might be worth a shot. I will report back with my results should I end up doing it.
