Thanks for the advice. I think i'll try it out when i get the thermal paste, an RMA process would be the last option...

How high is the chance that i get a worse silicon lottery and OC after replacement? and what clocks do you actually get with a "good" card?

When you you try it please tell in the other post.

What is you asics score? Mine is 81% and it clocks out of the box to 1150mhz and it is considered "normal", but i have seen better ones (one hit 1250 out of the box) and worse.

My previous card has 76% ASIC and it clocks out of the box to 1110MHz boost without any voltage and percentage boost. 1215 MHz in stock voltage and 1241 with 1.2V. My current card boost to 1097MHz (1137 with 40mhz offset) and 1189MHz with 1.2V. ASIC score is 73.1%. As you can see it's worse I think I will send the card to the dealer and buy a different store. Maybe it will be better.

You have been somewhat unlucky. But in games you should not see any diference at least in the current games. So you will play the silicon lotery again?

My ASIC is 73.8% and i get a out of the box card boost of 1085MHz and OC to 1188MHz with 1.1V?
so it couldn't become more worse.. should i also play the silicon lotery?

As i said....the diference in the games would be marginal...at best. Do you overclock like crazy? No....and you play without overclok....hold on to your card. If you oc and play oc you have the option of playing the silicon lotery. After the classified that i have iha a 780 windforce OC from gigabyte..... asic score of 64%......it has horrendous....the build quality sucked..... 1045mhz out of the box and the oc....almost nothing +-50mhz.

But it depends what do you want to do with it....just play? Break records?

What about the noise of it?

Important for me is a stable system to play almost every game in next 1-2y. Sure, oc is a nice to have and maybe there are several games you can get an effort out of it, but the focus is on a stable and silent system to play with. Maybe in the future its desired to overclock and play oc to get a better perfocrmance out of some games... but as far as it goes i'll hold the basic config.

It's just interesting me testing how far i could go with my card and i maybe also wane try the GTX classified controller to go with...

What do you practice? oc and play oc?

As said, first i try the proposed solution of you. If nothing helps i'll do an RMA.
I really hope to get rid of the noise in that way...

I have the same opinion. I want a silent and stable system to play. I just oc to run heaven benchmark and dont even increase the voltage in my card or the memory. I play with no oc because the framerate of these cards are insane. And i have an 120hz monitor and i still dont need to oc to get those 120 frames.

Still wonder if it is worth the effort. Maybe give it a rest. About OC say .... my card at 1202Mhz allows you to play Crysis 3 but with Battlefield 3 is already crash. My instability soon discovered the game World of Tanks, then next Battlefield 3 and Far Cry 3. It is stable in 1189MHz 1.2V. I have 10 days to return the equipment but for the money I can wait even four weeks. During this time, the card may get cheaper, because come out new Radeons.

I have yet only 3 days for the decision. Then there will be no possibility of return.

Re: GTX 780 SC ACX fan noises 2013/09/25 10:36:51 (permalink)
The fix sorted out my rattle.. well kinda, i still get a very small rattle at around 2500 RPM i think, but only happens now and then, i guess i missed a few fins in my fix.

TBH iv come to the point where, im not to bothered anymore. My long term plans are for a full custom water loop so i will be replacing the cooler anyway. However thats next year somtime.

Still whilst i was doing the fix i also replaced the TIM to try lower my temps which tend to run very hot even at stock. Unfortunatly changing the TIM did nothing. On the upside it means EVGA use good TIM, on par with Noctua NT-H1, the bad news is iv got a hot running card. At its stock 1.162v and 1241mhz core (+79 offset) my temps get very close to 80c even at 85% fan speed. Even at 1.175v and 1256mhz clock the temps are pritty much the same, but i decided to leave the voltage at stock for now.
Still with a clock like that on stock voltage it potentialy means that if i get it under water, so temps are no longer an issue, that i could get a really good OC at higher voltage, like 1.25v/1.3v or somthing using the voltage tuner program.

I listened to some of the recording of other users and how to fix the rattle, and the sound that came from my card was more of a coil whine. It is beginning to emerge from the card again. I don't think any acx card is safe indefinitely from some type of rattle or coil whine forming. If it gets any worse, I am reluctant to start another rma, since I'll just be getting back another refurb card.

I am having the exact same problem with my 780 classy at 3 points in my fan curve starts at 37% to 40%,  at 50% to 55%, and 76% to 86%. For now I just tweak the fan curve to just skip through those noisy bits ,really frustrating!!!!

Re:GTX 780 SC ACX fan noises 2013/10/18 14:59:26 (permalink)
So I installed my new Classified last weekend when putting together my new build, but didn't actually get around to trying it out until last night.

Mine's got the resonating problem mentioned several times in this thread.  Makes the noise from the 40%-50% range.  And in the 70%-80% fan range, too, but even louder.  No rattle though.

When I first heard it, I was like, "what the heck?" .  Didn't take me long to find this thread and the couple others that mention it, too.  At least I don't feel so alone with such a problem.

Even in the 60s range, the resonating is there, but at a very low volume.  Admittedly I probably wouldn't even think anything of it if that was the only volume it resonated at.  The sound it makes in the 40s and 70s ranges, though - yikes.

Guess I need to consider doing an RMA, or seeing what I can get Newegg to do for me.  I hate dealing with RMAs.  And having to pay the shipping, etc., just doesn't seem right for something that costs 700 bucks and seems to be a design flaw.   For the next few days, I'm going to try the fan curve thing.

My 780 classified have the same droning problem in the ranges 49-53% and in 73-76%. It is easily bypassed by a custom fan curve, thus avvoidin a rma return. But it is not right, and make me doubt the quality of the product.

Evga please fix this before the GTX 880 comes out. Because my plan was to get two of those in SLI with this otherwise outstanding cooler. If the droning persist on new editions I will have second thoughts.

Re:GTX 780 SC ACX fan noises 2013/11/05 13:25:33 (permalink)
So I've gone through a 780 Classified and a 780 FTW both with annoying sound issues. The classified had a drone at certain fan speeds and the FTW has a similar sound plus a little rattle at certain fan speeds.

It's disappointing because I like the size of the FTW. It's the only aftermarket fan that isn't super wide and will fit into my GD08 case. I am still within the 30 days to send it back, I guess I could swap for another FTW to see if I get lucky... Otherwise, I might just go with the reference cooler SC version. Although that supposedly has coil whine (it's mentioned, not sure if it's any worse than every other card that has coil whine).

This card will initially be in my Silverstone FT02 case, so the exhaust faces up towards me, I had a feeling the reference cooler might be annoying in that setup (even though it's the recommended cooler type for a rotated-motherboard case like that). If I find I'm not using the card often enough in the workstation, I'm going to move it to the HTPC. So that limits aftermarket cards. Otherwise I would just go with the Asus DirectCU as that is supposedly dead silent and well built.

I hope EVGA gets this taken care of. How exactly did these coolers get approved? I guess the primary purpose is better cooling, but isn't sound important also? With so many people having this annoying sound, I would think when they were creating the cooler and testing it out, they HAD to hear it. I've went through two cards and both sound bad compared to the EVGA GTX 285 reference I had in there before...

Does anyone have an ACX card that doesn't make annoying sounds like this? If so, I can try swapping it with another.

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth Z77 | CPU: Intel Core i7 3770k - HSF: Noctua NH-C12P SE14 | RAM: GSkill Ripjaw 1333 CAS 7 - 4 x 4GB | Graphics: EVGA GTX 680 | PSU: Seasonic X760 | Hard drives: Corsair Force GT SSD 120GB system drive, Samsung 830 256GB game storage drive, Samsung SpinPoint F3 storage drive, 1TB eSATA WD drive | Ceton InfiniTV quad PCI Express card | Lite-On bluray burner | Case: SilverStone GD08B - 4 x 120mm Gentle Typhoon (2 x 1450RPM, 2 x 1150RPM) intake fans and 2 x 80mm Noctua exhaust fans | Windows 8.1 64bit Professional w/ Media Center | Monitor: Sony W900a TV connected to Denon 2112ci AVR

EVGA's design, development and testing process is not good. They just concentrate on specifications that look good on marketing materials, but they don't thoroughly test their design before going to production. Had they tested the heatsink and fan combination at all RPMs in a sound room they would have caught this immediately. Even more simply they should know that if you have thin fins that are not anchored and add two fans rotating up to 3,000rpms the sh|t will vibrate. It's just one of those cases where the design team is immature or they do not have the proper resources to test and validate a product 100% before shipping to market.

Just got one of these from newegg (03G-P4-3784-KR) and experienced the resonance, humming, droning noise @ 39% fan speed. At around 45% it stopped.

So i changed the BIOS to the secondary one, tightened up the bottom screw and noticed the rubber SLI guard was still on the card.

Took that off and the resonance and humming reduced quite a bit. Almost to tolerable levels. Still, I've seen a few cases where the humming resides after a week of ownership.

I just bought a 780 sc w/ acx 03G-P4-2784-KR, and i'm also getting the noise, around 39%, 50% and 80%, i'm now in the process of either RMA or refund at the store, Do you think i should get one with reference cooler instead? Either that or DCUII from asus, though i'm not sure if it'll fit my case (fractal node 605), i fixed it temporarily by putting pressure on the card, though it's not the perfect solution

I too am worried about the build quality of this product, since it really seems like a design issue more than anything, even though you can bypass the noise with the fan curve, i don't believe you should have to do this with a 600$ product, and to RMa the card after only 1 week, i would lose my chance to get a refund.

I'd say get one without ACX cooling.

What did you do to put pressure on the card?

I don't have any problems with my two 780 SC ACXs, but I'm not sure if that's because I'm lucky, because others are unlucky, or that I have the same problems and am too dense to notice.

Would the reference cooler be better sound-wise than the ACX cooler?

Re:GTX 780 SC ACX fan noises 2013/11/11 04:52:55 (permalink)
I talked to EVGA customer service about it and they guy had no idea about he sound... He said him and his coworkers have it and they are just fine--that some people are just more sensitive to noise. That was even after I told him there is a big thread on evga's forum about people complaining about this.

I vote for the reference cooler if you're trying to decide.

Thanks

Does anyone know if the reference cooler has the same resonance? I can stand wind blowing.. The resonance is what's irritating.
