I currently have an OCZ Vertex 3 60GB set up as a boot drive.  My motherboard is an EVGA P55 FTW.  I want to get a second Vertex 3 60GB for RAID 0, but I'm not entirely sure if I can keep TRIM support while doing so.  I plan to install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit onto a RAID volume via F6 installation method.  Having never used RAID before, I have a few questions regarding the setup.  First, what stripe size should I select?  Also what about volume?  60GB or 120GB?  Finally, would these drivers give me TRIM support in RAID 0 and would they work on my motherboard?  Thanks in advance.

Now I don't know if you can keep TRIM, but I always use the largest strip available. More caching=faster speeds.

Good to know.  It was mentioned that Intel released a new driver with TRIM support in RAID, but P55 chipsets are not listed as compatible.  The ones I listed are newer, and have P55 listed as compatible chipsets.  I'll probably need an EVGA tech to answer that part.

i was so happy when i saw that intel intergrated raid and trim but thats only on their board and its not full blown trim. its like a hybird when i was looking it. basicly if you have a GREAT garbage disposle on your SSD it will be like full trim support.

I contacted the Kingston tier 3 SSD support, they said  as long as you turn off all the extra writing on your disk raid should be ok.

as of now you have to choose, keep the drives for an extra 6-10 months or get insane speeds.

vertex 3 in raid 0 was my plan until hyperX droped price in nearly half. just remember SSD slow down not completly die out. the speed diffrence probably will balance out the non trim support as long as you turn off all the extra windows writting to it.

OCZ's gabarge collector seems to standard hopefully will improove with firmware updates.
in a year they wil probably be some insane SSD and you foget about ur vertex 3. worst case a year and half.

So I'd need Intel's own P55 to get that sort of TRIM.  Oh well, I might not go with RAID then and like you said wait for future SSDs instead.

- No trim in any R0 config, no matter what ssd's are used. Trim commands are passed to a single drive under  raid array but not part of the array.
  - My drives have never ever seen a single trim command, been in some R0 array since the day I bought them.
  - GC is much better than trim and will maintain performance over time very easily, at least on Crucial drives.
  - As to stripe size 64k and 128k are the standards but you can go all the way down to 4k. If you want to find out which is better for your drive you can setup the array, but leave it blank. Boot into windows from another drive and try some bench runs on the array.
  - SSD's will pretty much scale 100% when you go from 1 to 2.

going raid 0 wasnt cost effective for me. it made much more sence to get 120 gb for 165 bucks.

60 gb is freaking too little . if it annoys you, it might just be worth it. plus i saw a bunch of people getting >1gb/sec for two vertex 3 in raid0

I'm actually okay with my one 60GB, but of course I can always go for more.  It's set up as a boot drive and in addition to that I have one game installed, and I still have 25GB left.  I guess I have a tough decision to make!  I'm not entirely sure if I'll go through with it or not.

I might just give RAID 0 a try.

raid 0 is fast and worth it imo. doubles your disk space/speeds/reads/writes ect.
there is no trim in raid 0. i have run raid 0 on my ssd's prior to the ones i have now for a while and lack of trim has no effect imo. the drives did not degrade or anything over time and use.

i say go for it. btw- i use the default 128k stripe and i find this most effective when running simple tasks such as windows, file swapping ect. you want to run a higher strip if your moving large files all the time.

mmkay... I'm gonna go for it soon.  I do move large files around sometimes, mainly > 1GB mods for games so I'll experiment with the stripe size to see what is best.  I clean my SSD often anyway and I'll take care of a RAID 0 setup, I promise.  Thanks for all of the help.

raid 0 on ssd's is just awesome, you can view my bench in this thread that pissed a member off...lol

Yeah, I saw that.  Those speeds are insane!  My Vertex 3s won't be that fast, especially since they'll be in SATA II, but they'll still blow me away.

this is a good read for some quick info on strip sizes.
