As I understand it... Each badge changes the background color as you achieve new levels in each project. For example...
 
Say you chose GO Fight Against Malaria. The main body of the badge never changes and looks like this but the background does each time you return a certain amount of completed work. The background colors go like this...
 

 
And for those that are using SNURKS sig... The lower bars are all of the causes and they match the colors achieved in the badges (As I understand it, to be corrected if I am mistaken).
 
You can see your badges with every post you make on the WCG forums or you can look in your "My Grid" and it shows you a list (Once you have any). 
 
I came across this thread, that linked me to a post.. That helps explain them a little for each cause as well...

The instructions are hidden in the sticky that's called BOINCview setup.

Basically you go to the linked thread at the WCG site and request it from a guy who makes them all, then wait until he has you set up.  Make sure to include your member number in the request.
 
AB, you might want to relabel that sticky since it also covers signatures.
