Balloon "Glow", in the dark the balloons are illuminated by the flame inside Can you guess which Hot Air Balloon is Della-bear ? For scale: (photo taken by person standing closer to balloons on left side) Della-bear stands 80 ft tall, 80 ft at widest point, holds 105,000 cubic feet of air - not including the bears The Teddy bears are 44 ft, paw to paw (side to side), The Bear is 3D, it protrudes from the envelope on two sides Balloon Festival near Easton, MD - about an hour away from where I live. We flew twice yesterday. @6:10 AM for an hour, @ 6:40 PM for 1/2 hour, then back to the field for the balloon glow. My day started Friday at 2 AM and ended at 12:30 AM Saturday, when I finished my shower. (22.5 hour day) I'm tired, guess I can't hag with the big dogs anymore. Enjoy your weekend, (edit typo)

My very first job was working with a hot air balloon crew. We would have to wake up at 3am and get all these cider bottles loaded up and then drive to a field and unroll the balloons. Then after they took off, we had walkie talkies and drove around after these balloons. We would wait on the ground, drink the extra cider and when the balloon touched down, everyone grabbed on the side to hold it down. If it decided to "hop" you were supposed to let go until it touched down again. No one told me that part so I had my first and only balloon ride hanging from the side. It probably only went up 50 feet or so but still I was scared. Then we would have to "milk' all the air out of the balloons. $6 an hour... Man that sucked.

Yes, indeed it is a team effort. Our crew are all volunteers, this is just a part time thing; we all have day jobs. Though they work up to a free ride, inside our basket. Rides on the outside of the basket are frown upon, glad you survived that harrowing experience. I'd give the Crew Chief & Pilot a FAIL on crew briefing. (Never let your feet leave the ground, is an important rule) There was a recent fatality for just that, person got hung-up on something on lift off - ended poorly. Most people really like manning the top line on inflation. Squeezing the envelope down, adding Velcro strips to hold it tight and packing it all back into the envelope bag is hard work. You do get to meet a lot of varied and interesting people though. Chasing is always fun. Never know where you will end up. (edit typo)

Not sure how I would feel being left to the whims of mother nature like that. But it sounds like you really enjoy doing this and that's the most important part. Recreation activities are a bit more laid back, or at the very least don't usually last 14 hours. Our "Mustang Club" tries to go out on a cruise/meet at least once a month during the warmer months so there is that. Plus I get together with a some friends every few weeks and do some tabletop gaming. For exercise? I get to chase the dog around on weekends.

This was a balloon Festival, that is why the loooong hours. During the "down time", we answer question from the public, talk with other teams and compare notes, visit Festival vendors, hunt down the food trucks and shop in the local area. Weather is important to us for sure as we are a 3-D sailboat basically, changing height to change direction. We do about three festivals a year and fly on weekends when the weather is cooperative. Mostly morning flights where I live as the afternoon winds are usually slow to calm - it is so very flat. Your Mustang is a ?

Another really expensive hobby... 2008 GT Instead of spending all of that money on my seemingly never ending/completed water cooling build I should have redirected the cash towards a new bottom end.

Nice! I'm not really sure what it is, but I get double vision and dizzy when I'm up there in altitude. They are nice to look at from the ground though. Recently i've been spending a lot of my free time at the gym and bike rides after i've demolished my upper body the day before. Just did my first 50 mile ride last week... Took 2 days to recover lol Just picked up my first full suspension bike yesterday, I will have to snap some pictures once I get it all cleaned up and tuned.

Looking forward to seeing the pics Get a good seat, 50 miles your getting into nerve damage range if you use a poor fitting seat and you ride often.

Was trying to tune it this morning... I have some squeaky breaks, pulled the break pads and they look shot. I was getting eaten up by mosquitoes, so I brought it inside after I cleaned it up. This is what it looks like for now. Bought it from a guy off craigslist for a steal. It's a 2011 Trek Fuel EX5. I think the first major upgrade will be some air shocks for the front. As for the seat... I have a WTB Pure Pro Gel on the bike I took for 50 miles. It gets the job done.

I would normally go to the Casino (not to gamble) they hire high grade bands on Saturday nights at this Casino that's in town where I'm at. A lot of people will end up going to the Casino to hear the different bands that play on Saturday nights. It turns out to be quite an evening.

I do this in my free time. That article is a bit dated, but the information is mostly accurate. I've promoted to 1st Lt and picked up a few more certifications and ribbons on the rack. I'm squadron PAO and one of a handful of airborne photographers in the wing used for damage assessment photography.

Very Nice, 1nd Lt Hawthorne I get the volunteer work for the CAP; its the driving that has me scratching my head. 500 miles sounds like a nice reason to crank-up the Lear jet or at least the Cessna; if VFR conditions allow and IFR if need be.

Promoted to 1st Lt last month. $150/hour vs $30 per round trip. Personally I think we should be flying them more though. I'd just as soon be the MO in the right seat of a Cessna 182 vs being the driver of a ground team. I'm certified for both.

I actually haven't been going lately. I just got married, and I have to save up to bring her into the states. Plus, if I go (now that is) it feels weird with her not with me. So I just stopped going. I'll probably end up going back once I get her into the states. Then it will be good. But, they hire this band call BBI, which plays a lot of various music from songs from the Disco era all the way to present with mixed genres falling into country and rock. Pretty cool, it definitely gets my mind off the computer, and gives me an opening to society. Plus the people that go, a wide range of different people, very exciting.
