I just got approved for a step up to a gtx 1080 gaming acx 3.0 from my gtx 1070 SC.

My gtx 1070 has been perfect, overclocks well and has very low temps(with hybrid cooler) max 50 @ +100, +400 full load for hours on bf1. I game at 1080p and this card is more than enough now. However, I have been considering a new 1440 or 4k monitor and figured the jump to a 1080 couldnt hurt while its available.

However, after reading these threads with everyone having problems with the1080, Im a bit nervous to make the jump. I dont want to send them a perfectly working card to get a headache in return.

What would you all recommend?

    Welcome to the Forum Mattsworld
What is wrong with the card you now have, what is it not doing for you?
Get your New Monitor and Test @ 1440 or 4k monitor with what you now have.
I dropped to gaming @ 1440 4K Res is a waste for me.
Dell Ultra HD 4K Monitor P2415Q 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor Is what I game on now.
Used on all my other computers.
Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor (1920x1200) 60Hz,16:10 is also a great all around Monitor to. $212 Prime.

My current card does everything i need it to, which is why Im hesitating to step up to the 1080. Of course Im on the timer now to complete the step up, so its either now or never..

    The 1080 cards are great.

There were issues with a small percentage of cards (don't know the exact number), and those people were very vocal.  The people who are perfectly happy with their cards are far less vocal.

    I have a 1080 FTW...no issues...no problems.

No. When you step up youll get a brand new reference 1080 which weren't affected by any issues and even if they were it would have the fixes implemented from the factory. Considering all that, you still are covered by at least a 3 year warranty by a company who has a great customer service track record. So you have nothing to worry about man!! Buy, game and enjoy!!!  :)  \m/

If your moving up from a 1080 monitor grab the 1080! 2560x1440 is great.. don't think a single card will do 4k yet for newer games.. not even a Titan xp will handle 60+ for most games... sli isint happening either so far this round of new games! Which what people would want for 4k gaming.

So clearly stick with a single 1080 for 1440.

See Post Post your GOW 4 Benchmarks (Real World)
So even your GTX 1070 will run 4K smooth as your Eye can see.
Between a GTX 780 and a GTX 1080 you may not see any difference, at least your Eye will not.
GOW4 with two GTX 1080 Cards one card sits idle and is not even used and has no more real power then the GTX 780 Card.
The only way to really know what your Computer will do is to step-up and move on.
If you get 1 FPS or 10 FPS is an unknown.

I can say with certainty, stepping up from a 980 Ti Classified to a 1080 ACX 3.0 myself, that you're good to go.

Just be forwarned that the performance difference isn't going to be mind blowing at 10 to 30% better depending on the game and overclocks, and 4K still isn't playable at high settings for many games (nor are they 60FPS or greater even with a Titan XP).

Step up to a 1080 and slap a hybrid kit on it. Then never look back.

Lots of good points being made that address your original concern.

It may help to know more about your PC specs.

1080 has more raw power, but I would think that it may not be a huge jump from a good 1070 GPU.

You are correct that 1080 display does not push either of these cards as they are powerful GPUs.

I just bought one of these: http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/accessories/apd/210-agjr?c=us&cs=19&l=en&sku=210-AGJR

to go with my 1070 FTW

Awesome monitor, most games run around the 100-120fps region and that's at 1440. It seems to be the sweet spot at the moment, once you experience g-sync, and ditch that awful v-sync you won't want to go back!

a 1080 would probably be more future proof, but as I seem to be finding, it makes more sense to sell your old card on ebay for ~1/2 the original purchase price a couple years later, and upgrade when the next architecture comes out. I bought my 1070FTW 1 year on from when the titan X (maxwell) launched, it's almost 3 times cheaper and offers a bit better performance (bar heavy compute). All of that for approx. £250 when you take into account selling your previous card, to me, it makes much more sense!

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions. So i have a couple hours to make up my mind(7 day deadline to pay ends shortly.

I have decided to keep my gtx 1070 and not step up. I really feel like I have a fantastic card here(overclocks 2100mhz & 4200 mem) and thats where I stopped with no voltage increase. Temps are extremely low and have never went over 50 since i put on a hybrid kit.

Maybe Ill regret it, but this card has been to good to send back and I think the increase in performance just wont be there on 1080p resolution. Instead i think i might buy another 1070 and sli them once prices drop a bit and I upgrade to a 1440 monitor.

To scatch my upgrade itch, i think i might purchase an EK extreme water cooling kit and try a custom water loop instead of aio's.

    My current rig is

I5 4690k devils canyon OC to 4.2 ( I think i could get to 4.4-4.5 if I increased voltage, just havent went that route yet).
    Asus 1080p 28" monitor 144mhz 2ms
    MSI gaming mobo
    16gb corsair vengence ram
    Coolermaster master case
Evga gtx 1070 GTX SC with hybrid water kit
    Corsair h100i gtx cou cooler

Ill be up,l and watching this thread, if you feel Im making a terrible mistake, let me know. Thanks!

Sounds like what I personally did. My original GTX 1070, an EVGA FTW model, was able to run at 2100mhz core, 4250 mhz mem, no problem. Instead of stepping it up to a 1080, I picked up another 1070, via step up on my prior GTX 960 and SLIed my cards. Even though I got a Founders Edition and an FTW SLIed, the Founders Edition is hardly lowering the power of the FTW since the FE is over clocked to 2030+ mhz core (only tested in heaven, haven't used that system much since installing the card). The real bottle neck in the system is the spacing between my cards. The slots I have to use put the cards with no space between them with no room for the fan to pull air in. I might modify the system over the next week and see what happens if I switch the slots the cards are in so the top card is the FTW and the bottom one is the FE. I will let you know how my 1070 SLI is after I get the chance to bench mark it although one game I like to use for bench marking, mainly because it uses Cryengine, is not been very playable since I had to install my wireless card.
