Or by moving a hair from the heatsink. Did they put these together in a salon?

I wish they would give me a job that just entailed applying thermal material. I would enjoy it and the gobs of TIM wouldn't happen... the amount of excess Tim has always bugged me.

Get the hair DNA tested, find out who the father is...

What thermal paste did you use?
I just ordered Gelid Extreme, so I will also try repaste top card and let you know about results.

good to see you found the problem, 3 times too much is usually the norm. and the hair didn't help either.  Gelid ex is a good choice.

I use some cheap Antec 7 something paste.

Yesterday I applied Gelid Extreme on my top GTX 980Ti Classified and its still throttling...
It takes a little longer for the card to reach 83C and it downclock little less (around 1250MHz instead of 1200).

Practically not a big change for me:(
I hope Evga will design AIO hybrid cooling solution for non reference 980Ti's.
Jacob told they are working on it yesterday on stream - I hope it is true.

One more thing - there is almost no difference if I remove case side panel - so it's not a metter of bad airflow in the case.
These cards are just too hot for sli... I wonder what temperatures MSI Lightnings hit in sli.

Below results taken from OC3D shows how bad Classy is...

Yeah I heard they are working on ones for classy/Kingpin cards. Also I have a buddy who has two Kingpins like me and uses the Thermaltake Core X9 case. His temps dropped 5c just changing cases. The heat doesn't hit the top card as bad as in a vertical mounted case.

I went from SLI 980 SC to SLI 980 Ti Kingping and I can assure you, the Ti puts out way much more heat, despite the better cooler on default settings. You even need a far more aggressive fan profile for the Ti to bring it to 980 levels. Overall, warmer room!
