I've got a few random questions based on my first 45mins or use or so.

  1. Is normal for the pump to make buzzy/clicky noises?  When I first turned it on there was a lot of air bubbling noises (I did mount radiator with hose on the bottom) but that went away after like 30secs or so.  But I noticed mostly when I play games the pump (assume it's the pump) makes a bit of buzzing and clicking, it seems to increase more with use.
  2. Is it ok for the tubes to be touching anything?  My case isn't that big so routing was a bit of pain, the tubes are leaning against a few parts of the case, is this ok?  I made sure not to stress them too much, even though they are quite flexible.
  3. What are some average temp ranges with this.  It's running good, but I can't help but wonder if it should be running better.  Only loaded up a couple games Cities Skylines & Tropico 5 and it's gotten up to about 50c, with only about 2.3GB of vram in use, and I think like 30% gpu usage.
  4. Now for the real issue, I've only had this on for about an hour and it's already crashed twice.  Just out of nowhere it shuts off, then reboots after a second or two.  This is new build, but I've been using it for the last 2 weeks with an old 560Ti video card and had no problems.  Both times were while in games, not even pushing the card, running below 50c, and cpu (4690k on a H60) was below 50c as well.  My friend's "gut" says it's my PSU.  This is an all new build, except I am reusing my about 4yrs old Zalman 750w PSU.  I'm not sure why that would be an issue though, it's more than enough power for this build, and has all the connections I need (including 6+8 pin for the video card) but just thought I'd throw that out there.  Any ideas?  I'm not even sure where to start to trouble shoot it, it just shuts off, and instantly reboots to desktop (which with this m.2 ssd takes about 20secs).
Thanks in advance for any help

1. It's not normal at all, it should run silently except for the fan under load.

2. Perfectly ok for the tubes to be touching other components.

3. In the stock push configuration, the load temps should be around 50C, so it sounds like you're good there.

4. It's hard to determine the reason for a crash, but I can say if it's crashing to the desktop, my first guess is the drivers.

That's for the feedback.

I should reword #4 better.  It's not crashing to desktop, it just restarts.  Shuts off, reboots back to desktop.  Both times have been in the middle of games then just black screen (fans go low), then does it's normal boot run up (which is very short on this PC).

For question #4 it would help if you could go to 'All Control Panel Items' < Administrative Tools < Event Viewer < Windows Logs < Application and look for recent 'Critical' level events of an 'unexpected' restart.  Can you tell me if an NVIDIA driver crashed seconds prior to the restart, or what would you blame it on (error just prior to restart).  It would also help if you could tell me the exact driver that crashed and what not.

That would help narrow down what is causing the issue.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it!  I didn't find any "Critical" entries on Applications but I did find two (about the time of the restarts, I didn't record exactly what time the happened) under System.

Here are two screenshots I took, one of the last "Critical" system error, and the 2nd is a series of Application event errors that happened about the same time.

I had number 4 recently and it turned out it was the driver. Generally speaking, I've found that if the system locks up, it's the GPU. If it reboots, it's the driver (or possibly the SSD in your case).

Hmmm, but I installed the latest driver, so what can I do there?

So the plot thickens a bit.  I haven't been using the PC for couple hours as I have some other things around the house to do.  But I took a break to check out the replies and decided to load up a game again.  The system didn't crash (yet) but I did hear that buzzing noise again, which I only seem to hear during games.  I took a video (that I haven't uploaded yet) and then afterwards I got real close to listen to it and.........the noise seems to be coming from the power supply.   Once I paused the game it toned down quite a bit, once I quit the game it went away.

It's common for the driver to either not be optimal for your system, or for it to have not installed correctly. I think mine got corrupted after some crashes while overclocking. I made a CLEAN install (lots of steps, I'll be happy to share) of the most current drivers and not a problem since. I'm actually glad it's your PSU, that's an easy fix.

Rebooting during gaming like someone pulled the power plug then plugged it back in and started the computer = psu issue most of the time. Overheating hardware could also cause reboots.

Simplest explanation: the PSU is responsible for ALL your troubles. Sorry for going on a tangent about my recent experience.

Sure I'd love to know the steps for a full clean install of the drivers since I did switch video cards.

Hmmm, so sounds like I need to get a new PSU, doh. I was "eventually" going to replace it, oh well it is 5+ yrs old. So what size wattage do ppl recommend for my build? I thought I calculated it uses 500w, and thought 750w would be enough, guess it lost some effiecency over the years.

I would agree that the crashes are out of no where and can likely be associated with a failing PSU.  I think a 750W would be fine would be fine and if you wanted to go a little overboard then an 850W wouldn't hurt.  I personally would recommend a Corsair PSU as they are generally top notch and I have had only positive experiences with their products.

If there would of been errors in the seconds leading up to the critical error then it would have been a different issue.

I was actually looking at Corsair's, I've heard good things.  I have a couple Fry's Electronics where I live so I was seeing what they have that I could just get one tomorrow.  The two I'm looking at are the RM750 and AX860.  I'm not really sure what the difference is between them other than the AX is Platinum certified, while the RM is Gold.  I would like to eventually do SLI, like a few years down the road, and FULL modular is a must, as I have a micro-atx case.

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it!

Get the ax if you're going to go corsair.  The extra money is worth it, the RM is definitely better than the cx which should be avoided but it still has weaker and  cheaper capacitors.  The ax and hx are really good psu's but the lower end corsair is just not the same quality at all.

The steps I take to update/reinstall drivers.

1- Download latest (or desired) PhysX and NVIDIA drivers.
2- Using control panel and Uninstall Programs, uninstall PhysiX first, then NVIDIA drivers DO NOT RESTART.
3- Delete any NVIDIA folders on your C or D drive, and in the Program Files, Program Files (x86), AppData, and ProgramData folders.
4- Type "msconfig" in the Windows search bar and start the program. Under the "Services" tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", then "Disable All."
5- Restart system.
THE NEXT STEPS REQUIRE EDITING OF REGISTRY FILES. DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO THE REGISTRY FILES. Sorry, felt like I had to get that out of the way. Anyway...
6- Type "regedit" in the Windows search bar. You'll want to get rid of any NVIDIA folders in the registry. They'll be located in the SOFTWARE folders in certain ones of the main folders: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE; and in the HKEY_USERS main folder, the following subfolders: .DEFAULT\Software\ and any other subfolder in the HKEY_USERS folder that has a SOFTWARE sub-subfolder. As long as you only delete NVIDIA folders, you'll be fine. Close the registry.
7- Right click on the PhysiX install and run as admin.
8- Right click on desired NVIDIA drivers and run as admin. When prompted, click custom install. Then click clean install and uncheck every box other than the drivers themselves, which should be the only box that's grated out. If you insist on GeForce Experience, that's up to you. I personally don't recommend it. Install drivers. DO NOT RESTART.
9- Search for and run MSCONFIG again. Under the GENERAL tab, select NORMAL STARTUP, then restart when prompted.

And that's how I uninstall and reinstall my drivers. Again, the only thing that seems to mess with the installs as I do it is repeated crashing due to overclocking. Once I find a steady OC, like I have now, I keep it and the drivers aren't a problem from that point on. If insisted anything, feel free to chime in. I have to confess I am not a fan of SAFE MODE, so I didn't forget to list it.

Coolermaster is also a great product, not to mention EVGA (obviously). I also recommend a minimum of 850, especially if you intend to go SLI in the future (though I'd have to say 1000 would make me feel a lot better for SLI).

Thanks for all the help guys. I went and bought a Corsair AX860 @ Fry's tonight. Been painting all day so probably won't get around to hooking it up till tomorrow evening as the house is still a mess.

Ok opened the PSU finally but have one more question. Confused in which cables to use for the video card. It's got two sets of PCI-e cables.

Set A) is a 6pin+2 where the +2 comes off the 6pins. So I'd need to use two of those for the video card.

OR Set B) has cables that are 6+2 and then another 6+2 loops off of that. So I'd only need to use one cable for the video card with that one.

It's confusing cause my old one just had to seperate cables coming from the PSU, a 6 pin then a seperate 6+2pin.

So with the 980ti hybrid should I be using two seperate cables (set A) or is it ok to use the one cable that has two pairs of 6+2 pin (set B)? The instruction don't explain ****.

You can run it off the one wire with the two 6 + 2 cables, that's what I did.

I'd use one from each to spread the load, though you'll be fine if you use the same one.

I have 2 980 TI hybrids

1. I have experienced the bubbling on both of my coolers after i flipped them around to fit better in my case. i don't have any buzzing/clicking noises though, is it consistent?
2. Shouldn't cause any issues
3. i reapplied my thermal paste and i hover 42-46c on load in benchmarks/games 99% usage on both cards.
4. Old low-mid quality PSU's are always suspect in my book. Get a quality PSU and do a fresh OS install.

Ah good to know.  If it was ok (enough power) I was leaning towards using the one cable with two 6+2pins on it, since I have a pretty small case, so any space I can free up in it.

How much work was that?  Does it void the warranty?  What kind of paste did you use?  And what were your temps at load before?  And how many fans, what configuration are you using?  What kind of fans?

Ok got the AX860 up and running! Haven't had the system crash yet after running some games for 20mins.

BUT the video card is making low buzzing noise constantly all the time. Can't tell if it's the pump or the fan. I made a video, mic is not great and picks up some of the ambient noise like AC in the back. But when I move the camera to the back of the case you can hear what it normally does, with or without side one. http://youtu.be/rKgY3qdwWe8

Also seems like it's running fairly warm, for a hybrid. Just running Tropic 5 for 10mins it's at 56c with less than 50% usage, and that's with the side panel off. I do only have a push fan on it (SP120 quiet edition), another on CPUs H60 and one exhaust on the top (AF120 quiet). Been thinking of replacing them all with something that moves a bit more air and isn't too much louder. Making both a push/pull, push more exhaust

Re: Got my 980Ti Hybrid, got questions 2015/08/24 19:52:09 (permalink)
Mine ran at around 55-57 in crysis 3 and gta v, that was the highest it would get.  Then I push/pull on my hyper 212 evo and for some reason it brought those temps down to around 53 max.  So then I ended up doing a push/pull on the hybrid also with the stock fan and another fan I had, not static pressure though and my temps are now 25 at idle and around 48 max in crysis 3 and gtav.  The other games it's around 44 or 45.

I'm going to pick up some good static pressure fans sometime soon and put them on the hybrid.  I don't know if I'm starving for cool air cause I used one of my 120mm fans I had on drive cage that moved a bunch of air around that's not there anymore but that replacement fan wont be here till thursday.

EDIT:  Good to hear the other problems fixed with the power supply.

Where is the Corsair AX860 on that?  Is it one of the "AX MK #" ones in the top tier?

Corsair ax mk1 and 2, tier 1.

Edit

I misread what you said. Not sure. It's doesn't cover every psu ever made but if I had a guess, if your psu is a corsair ax series its probably pretty good. Those are seasonic rebrands
