I took my PC apart last night to clean it out.  While everything was out, I noticed that there is some oily residue on the back of my 4GB GTX670 SC.  Upon closer inspection, there is also some gel-like substance in the "E" cutout of the backplate.

Anyone know what this stuff is?  Is this normal?

the only thing that it can really have come from that I can think of is a fan bearing, they are oiled, if one exploded or leaked, it could cause this.  is there any fan noise?  if not, you maybe caught it early.   how about the other side of the card?  Is there the same residue slung around where the fan is?

Oil like gel will leak from the thermal pad around the square GPU socket cutout.
This is normal....

It should really NOT reach the "E" cutout unless your card is not level and it flowed there.

Check your config for anything above the videocard.
This includes CPU cooling/fans and any fan on the top of the case for bearing oil leaks.

If it -is- just thermal pad leaking, this is completely normal and will not effect the card or its warranty

it could be from another fan, inspect the system for residue somewhere else.

oop looks like maniac beat me to it

There are no fans near the video card except for the card's own fan. The card isn't in the path of any fluid that might leak from any fan either.

Anyone see the gel-like substance poking out of the "E"?

I noticed oily smudges around the evga logo as well. The card runs fine though.

I hope its not a big deal.

I've gotten that too on my 570 SC and my new 670 FTW. Wipe it off with some 409 or Simple Green

haha, this is completely normal folks :)

the "gel" is the rear vram thermal pad that so happens to overlap with the backplate's cutouts (notice is a whole row all the way down), and the residue is just leakage from the pads, go ahead and wipe it clean if you wish, but the "gel" being there is completely normal

Ah ok. I did have the card in a Silverstone FT03-Mini. So it was mounted with its ports facing the ceiling.

I'd like to clean out that exposed thermal pad.  Anyone have any recommendations on replacement thermal pads?

I would be very very very careful

The problem here will not be removing the back plate and cleaning it. Because of the pad design it is NOT suggested to clean or remove it.
The real issue will be the terrible temptation to try and wipe the card itself once the plate is removed...
Should you try and do so, it will be very easy to damage the card....

My suggestion would be to wipe off what you can see on the plate itself, and then leave it alone.

If you do have plans to remove the backplate, I suggest you contact EVGA support before doing so

I've already contacted them and ask their tech support how I could go about replacing the exposed thermal pad.  They said I should ask in their forums.

Thermal pads. Just match the thickness of the existing pad.

Anyone know how thick the stock thermal pads are?  I've never seen a thermal pad "liquify" like the one in this GTX670.  Must get very hot for it to do that.

I have 2 GTX 580s with backplates and both have had some leakage since day one 2 years ago when I installed them.
I just gently wipe off my backplate everytime I clean my heatsink and fan, I do not remove it.

Make anykind of mistake in such a temp loaded critical area of the GPU, and you could damage or destroy your videocard.

The area beneath the backplate is a temp. loaded, critical area? If so, why don't they put backplates on all of their cards?

Back plates might get you a degree or two cooling if you have decent air flow over them. It's not a temp critical area but you do want to be careful if you replace the material. It needs to be fairly compliant (soft). If the existing one is not damaged there is no reason to replace it. By my calibrated eyeball I'd guess they are between 2 and 2.5 MM. You could contact EVGA. They could probably tell you exactly what thickness and what material.

The thing I would worry about is making sure you dont short the plate to the card when you reinstall it. Many cards don't even have cooling on the back RAM so I would probably just leave it alone and wipe it off. If you replace it ,try to get a good pad. Some do not transfer the heat well. Try measureing a part of the pad that is not compressed to get an idea how thick you need. Also buy more than you think you need. Just in case.

He said of the GPU not the back. When you loosen up all the screws on the back you are loosening the whole heatsink. Sorry if I sound like a jerk, just clarifying.

I have exactly same issue here on my GTX 670 FTW+ 4GB. I noticed that after only two days of use. I plan to replace the original reference cooling with the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II just like a forum member PhantomApollyon did with his VGA card and by doing that, I'll probably remove the backplate solving this issue. I really like to keep my rig very nice and clean specially because it's mounted on a open bench case :)
Thank you all for letting me know that's normal...

What about the ugly thermal pad that's visible now through the letter cutout? Is that pad going to shove itself back under the backplate over time? :p

You are really making a big deal out of this.

If it is impossible for you to live with, I would suggest you just buy another backplate.
*Just remember, it -is- going to leak when its working correctly.
Under normal mounting (horizontal)  around the GPU core, or if mounted "vertically" (as you posted) it is quite likely to drain down and effect the other pads (what you are seeing)

If it was my card I would simply wipe off the excess

Yes ,yes it will.
If you've ever done any heatsinks before ,this should not be too hard to fix. Remove the plate each screw a little at a time. Then clean up the mess without removing any of the other pads. Do not touch the surface of the faulty pad, but slide it till it is where you want it. Then put it back together tightening the screws in stages from the GPU area out. Do not twist or bump the card while you have all the screws out or you might loose the thermal contact between the GPU and heatsink. Or just reapply the GPU TIM while your at it. EVGA will not void your warranty as long as you dont mess it up. But if you do, it is on you. Iv'e never had any problems doing VGA heatsinks.
