I've had this posted on Elite Dangerous' and GeForce's forums and thought I'd condense it and post here.

I built the following PC in 2009:

EVGA X58 Motherboard (E758) - latest BIOS
6GB RAM - now 12GB
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum
EVGA GTX 295
HIPER Type M HPU-4M880 880W Continuous @ 40°C (Maximum Continuous Peak: 1040W) ATX12V V2.2 & EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

The GPU has been upgraded through a GTX 480 & GTX 670 FTW LE to a GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0.  I have tested multiple monitors in DVI & HDMI.

I have an issue in Elite Dangerous where, usually when jumping into "Hyperspace", the entire screen goes white (sometimes black), even if I'm playing windowed mode. Often, if it turns white, it turns black a second or two later.  I can hear the game in the background still running. I've taken an in-game screenshot after this has happened and can see the game screen as I would expect to see it were the display working properly.  This problem has plagued me since I received the adapter.  EVGA has RMA'd the card once.  I've religiously updated the drivers as they've become available using DDU in Safe Mode, rebooting to Safe Mode and installing the driver with just the driver and Physx selected with a Clean Installation. I am able to run FLAWLESSLY for WEEKS on my GTX 670 FTW LE.

Things I've tried:
  • latest Windows drivers
  • monitoring temp & voltages w/MIS Afterburner (all within norms)
  • DDU in Safe Mode & install driver in Safe Mode
  • latest Creative driver (onboard sound has been disabled for years)
  • latest Corsair 1500 driver (headset)
  • latest Razer driver (keyboard)
  • latest Logitech driver (mouse)
  • latest Saitek drivers (X52 Pro throttle & joystick)
  • partial disassembly of components w/case cleaning
  • removal of Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi card
  • moving GPU to slot closest to CPU socket
  • uninstall & re-install game
  • different resolutions, windowed, borderless, fullscreen modes
  • Geforce Experience installed & optimized for Elite Dangerous
  • Uninstalled GeForce Experience
  • Checked Event Viewer for any warnings or errors (none)
  • Changed OS & game settings for refresh rate
  • Limited framerate to 60fps (framerate)
  • VSync on & off
At this point I'm throwing rocks at the game code, the driver, and the age of the motherboard.  But I'd love any good advice.  This has been ticketed with Elite Dangerous and GeForce.

Thanks!

Do you have an image of what it looks like that you can post?
Does this happen only in Elite Dangerous?
If so is your game patched up to the current Patch?
Have you asked the same question on Elite Dangerous support site?

Why do you do Driver Install this way "DDU in Safe Mode & install driver in Safe Mode"
Why do you go into Safe Mode, are you on Windows 8?

The screen turns all white. It usually goes black a couple of seconds later. Screenshots taken after it happens show an expected game screen - not all white or all black.
I've not played any other games as I have mounted the throttle and joystick to the keyboard pull-out tray (and I'm lazy!).
All patched. Ticket submitted at Elite Dangerous and GeForce both.

Have you tried all available GPU drivers sets 344.11 through 347.52 to see if they all produce the same issue? Have you tried manually setting and running the GPU fan at maximum speed using msi afterburner to see if it helps correct the white/black screen? Have you tried downclocking the video card?

Maybe it's just the game crashing, if it were to be the drivers there would usually be a blackscreen with a memory dump on crash. Unless you can replicate the issue on another game, I would suspect the games engine/code to be the culprit. You also mentioned that you could still take a screenshot so clearly the videocard was okay and processing everything normally during it.

    Have tried all drivers, yes.
I've not tried the fan at max.  I have just started using Precision X to use it's auto fan feature and will see how that goes.
I've not tried downclocking the vidoecard.  Again, this has happened with the original AND with this RMA replacement.

I tend to agree bsmegreg. But I'm getting no feedback from Frontier (Elite Dangerous) or GeForce. EVGA stands behind their product, however.

Finally, it appears I'm not alone: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=121293]https://forums.frontier.c...howthread.php?t=121293

Multiple builds all 900 series if not all 980s. This is looking very much like it's between the game code and the drivers.

Do you have the latest BIOS? If you replicate the problem and let your PC sit for 5min, reboot, is there a crash dump or do you know if you have any crash dump files? I'm aware of a lot of NVIDEA driver issues and bluescreens which are black due to driver crash and I wouldn't doubt if that is your issue. It's very clear by the black screen that your drivers crashed, installing new/clean drivers did not help suggesting it may be an issue you cannot fix. (Unless NVIDEA does)

    Yes, latest BIOS.
Never a crash dump. In-game screenshot shows an expected game screen, not the white/gray/black screen I see.

Weird.... It's still probably the driver though and if it's not gonna work than its not gonna work, maybe if you rolled it back to a older driver it may work. Otherwise, you can wait and cross your fingers that nvidea fixes the issues with there drivers/stability.

New, 347.88 drivers do not fix.  Now resorting to downclocking.  If anyone has a suggested utility/method that works and is straightforward, I'd like to hear about it.  Looked for it in Precision X briefly - hate that interface.  Used a somewhat recent copy of MSI Afterburner.  What's your best method?

    Thanks.

I'll be watching this thread. I've been having the same issues with my ACX 2.0 and Elite. I also didn't realize at first that the fans stop spinning when under like... 60c I think it is? I checked after a crash in Elite and noticed they weren't spinning and freaked out initially. Enough to re-seat my card. Had even contemplated sending it in before I found out about the fan stuff online. From now on I'm just gonna have Precision X handle the cooling with a custom fan curve... It just weirds me out that they would power down when not under load.

Woah man, the fans only run while the card is under load and this is to prevent the fans from unnesacary ware. The card can get upto like 110C and 60C is nothing, although it is strange they don't turn on at that point.

But you shouldn't set a fan curve to force the fans to run and not be able to idle as this could lead to early failure on the card.

I believe that, by default, if the card's under somewhere around 60 degrees the fans do shut off. I suggest using Precision X or MSI's afterburner to create a fan curve/setting you like as well as dropping the GPU clock a bit.

I have the same problem with the EGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 in games like Assetto Corsa, Game Stock Car Extreme, Formel1 2014, i dont own Elite so can't say about that. In all the games i get a random grey screen with sound continuing, then drops to desktop with Nvidia display driver stopped responding...  I have tried the same as you different drivers, total reinstall, checking bios and the usual stuff. only thing that will stop the crash is downclocking the GPU. I can run 3dmark and other benchmarks for hours without errors... real games crashes using stock settings.

maby they put standard 980's in the 980's SuperClocked boxes by mistake :-P

Not sure if i should RMA or wait and hope its a driver problem.. its about a month old now.

The -51 drop to the GPU Clock with Precision seems to be working so far.  I wasn't in a position where I was Hyperspacing much but am now.  So I'll continue to report back.  I also have the auto-fan feature checked.  The problem is remembering to load Precision and configure it before a gaming session.

    Hi!
I have the same problem and looking in the Event viewer shows the driver crashing (message: Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered).
I see that the game goes smooth and using base clock (1265Mhz, 1.068V) or less, but when entering witch-space the clock goes to Boost-clock (1392MHz, 1.206V) and ramdomly crash, (it goes to boost-clock when inside hangar too, but don't crash)
The down-clocking you mention is 51%!?
I'm working with Frontier in a ticket, to see if they can track the problem (already tryed clean-install back the drivers up to 347.09).

I don't think NVIDEAs drivers support some games. (Probably by accident)

What is TDR? Windows Vista has a new feature called Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR). TDR attempts to detect problematic situations and recover to a functional desktop dynamically. In prior operating systems these situations would have resulted in a system freeze and forced customers to reboot their PC. More information about this Vista feature can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/displ...dm_timeout.mspx. Therefore, when you see the TDR error message "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered", you know that the display driver is being reset without requiring a reboot.

Why does it happen? TDRs can occur for a variety of reasons, many of which are unrelated to the graphics card or graphics driver. Since Vista launched, NVIDIA has been working hard to address TDRs issues that are specific to the graphics driver. Last year, we set up the NVIDIA Vista Quality Assurance Site to record and address user issues:http://www.nvidia.com/object/vistaqualityassurance.html. Since that time, we have resolved a majority of the issues specific to the graphics driver and have also worked directly with Microsoft to release five Vista hotfixes, all of which are now part of Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). If customers are still experiencing issues, we recommend that they continue to file issues at the quality assurance site. We also recommend that customers look carefully into the wide range of other causes of TDR issues such as overclocked components, incorrect component compatibility and settings (especially memory configuration and timings), defective parts (memory modules, motherboards, etc.), insufficient system cooling, and insufficient system power. Throughout the forums, there are numerous reports of hardware solutions to TDRs.  ""

I'm working with Frontier in a ticket, to see if they can track the problem (already tryed clean-install back the drivers up to 347.09).

I have no reports in any logs when this occurs.  It's occurred at the Outfitting screen before, btw.

    And no, not 51%! -51Mhz!

And I've jumped in Hyperspace many, many times since my last post.  The reduction of clock has fixed the problem until nVidia and/or EVGA have a real fix.

Ahhh..., Ok, will try underclocking a little (I was thinking to lower it to make the new boost speed equal to the actual base clock).
After looking the specs of plain gtx980 will try a the same base clock speed at 1126Mhz
    Thanks!

    Hi, lrjfamily!
Down-clocked 126Mhz and it works... with this I set the new boost frequency equal to the original base frequency, and actual base frequency very close to the GTX980 standard card base frequency.
    No crashes up to now.
EVGA support was concerned about the stability of the power supply (Corsair RM1000, 1000W, 12V, 82A...), but I checked and doesn't change... it's constant 12.096V no mater what setting I use in the card and the game.
Not messed with trying different drivers yet, but since I lowered the base clock frequency I had no more problems (...yet...)

Since you had to downclock your card to gain stability I would highly recommend you RMA your card. You shouldn't have to downclock your card to gain stability, the card should be 100% stable at factory clocks.

...probably I shuld, but I'm in Colombia, and it's very expensive to return the stuff to USA.... Running few Mhz's lower is less problematic...

I did RMA my first one.  I've been using this one since. It's serial number's lower than the one I had. *Shrug*

I owe them a call to keep the ticket moving with info.
