Okay, so I either misunderstood, or the tech didn't explain it properly over the phone...but here's the updated low down:
He installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bit which I own/provided. If he installed any updates beyond service pack 1, the computer would become unstable and crash/restart. He tested windows home premium and no problems existed. He was able to install all windows updates fine. After researching it he wasn't able to find any conclusive, but found that a handful of users who were reporting the same problem, attributed it to their hardware configuration not playing nice with Windows 7 Ultimate.
His solution was, unless I'm going to downgrade to Home Premium(I'm not going to spend more money on a lesser version of windows that I already own, or upgrade to Windows 10, which judging my the mixed compatibility reviews from gaming community, doesn't sound like a good option either.
So looks like I'm stuck with what I got and am currently looking for a reliable virus scanner to help fill the hole that windows updates would normally patch. What do you all use? I was previously using Microsoft Security Essentials. I switched to them after AVG become more of a memory hog at one point years ago and after the install MSE found a couple trojans. O_o Haven't switched since. I'm thinking about Kaspersky.
