Would it be better to buy new graphics card or go sli with my current graphics card? I will mainly use for playing and recording video games at high settings.

*I just want more fps and smooth gameplay when recording.

My rig:
EVGA z97 Classified
EVGA GTX 780 Classified
i7 4790k
Corsair 750w AX

Thank You.

If the games you play support SLI, then that is an option.

However your EVGA GTX 780 Classified has 3 GB RAM and that will limit resolution capacity to 1080

When I upgraded from 2-way SLI EVGA 780 KingPins to 2-way SLI EVGA 980 SC

The performance was equal at 1080 resolution, however the 980 SC took less power and made less heat

At 4K there was no contest, the 4 GB RAM in the 980 SC was better

A single 1070 would have even more power and draw less power.

Recording (such as using OBS, Xsplit, etc.) use the CPU to record/encode. If you're playing a demanding game and trying to record (seeing as you have 4 cores) your CPU will be where the issue lies as it is being maxed out. See if you can run a program such as MSI Afterburner and monitor your CPU usage while you're recording. If it's ~100% across all cores, no matter how many graphics cards you have you will still have the same problem.

What resolution do you record at?

If the game plays fine NOT recording but gets choppy or stutters when you START/are recording, I'd say it's a CPU bottleneck.

780 is an older card. The new 1080's overclocked will be the way to go.

I would definitely get a new card. A GTX 1080 if you can afford it, but a GTX 1070 will do just fine if that fits your budget a little better.

Here is an idea of FPS to expect per card:

Thank you everyone for your advice! I forgot to mention, I have no plans to go above 1080p and the software I use to record are Action and Shadowplay.

Budget is big issue right now for me. I can't really afford a new gpu. I was hoping another 780 classified card would help.

    Thanks again!

There are a few things to consider if you go with SLI'ed 780s:
    - Kepler is old, so support in newer games may be limited.  I've seen some games where a GTX 960 beats a GTX 780 Ti.  The 780 Ti is ~20-30% more powerful than your 780.
    - SLI support is hit or miss, so your upgrade might end up being null in various games.
    - 3-year-warranties have either ended or are ending this year for the 700 series (launched in 2013 and was retailed until 2014).
    - 1080p is still demanding if you like to max stuff out.
    - I would estimate that two 780s will be less powerful than a single 1070 in most games.
    - That 3GB is a serious limitation, even at 1080p.  One of my buddies has a 780 Ti still and textures were struggling to load in with Gears of War 4 at 1080p.  We're in the VRAM era, where each generation just about doubles last gen's VRAM at the mainstream and entry-level-enthusiast price points (GTX '60, '70, and Ti variants).

I would recommend a GTX 1070.  It's a much better investment and it isn't too expensive.  You can also finance it with zero interest through various sources if needed.  I think a lot of people forget this when considering video card purchases.

I would sell 780 and GTX1080 off course.
Any GTX1080 on reference clock will be amazing upgrade.

I went from a 780 Hydro Copper oced to Classifed clocks to a 1070 FTW. Resolution used is 2560x1440 and i had a gain of about 40 to 50%  more FPS in most of my games.

what games do you play? the 770 that I gave away to one of my students works really well still. he's able to play bf1, w3, etc. nvidia recording works great, too. if you're at 1080 and you don't have a 144hz monitor I don't think it really matters that much. the performance boost that I got going to a 1070, then a 1080 wasn't worth the $500, then $600 that I spent. I did it because I got value out of giving away the cards to deserving people, but if I had to stick with my trusty 770 today I wouldn't be sad at all (although I wouldn't have bought my current gsync monitor in that case).

really the only major benefit i got from going 10 series was that i no longer had stupid crashes in bf1. but that was not the fault of the card at all, it's either dice or nvidia not supporting 770 properly.

also, if it helps, in rainbow six siege, on ultra at 1080p 144hz with all the heavy AA turned on I use about 3.6gb of vram. but i found I don't even like that aa, i prefer plain fxaa and that takes 2048. guess that's more than the 2gb my 770 had but not less than the 3gb you have...

problem with sli though is that 780 i don't know how cheap it is used. 770 i see them going for about $75 these days. also, don't forget that sli 780s will need a lotta power. I wouldn't feel comfortable with at least an 850w psu with single 12v , 85+, etc.

I will play mostly Resident Evil 7, Starcraft 2, CS GO, Killing Floor 2, and Rise of the tomb raider. I'm also going to do a HEAVY video game recording and editing.

I just recently bought a EVGA GTX 1080 FTW and paired it with a Dell S2716DG monitor... It's amazing, everything maxed out at 2K running 144Hz with G-SYNC they claim 165Hz... either way, it's so smooth, i'm still getting used to it.
