I've never participated in a time zone challenge before.

First, how do I estimate how many PPD I can produce?

What I make on my desktop varies with the time of year/outside temps and how much gaming I want to do (A quad core Xeon Haswell and a 970, limited to 80C). The desktop also has a 750 Ti that I use to game and surf while the 970 folds. I find that if both GPUs fold, the PPD drops, apparently due to cooling airflow conflicts. (Server case)

I also have my travel gaming laptop, with a 940MX w/ GDDR5 and an i5-6200U, and a cooling fan desk thing the laptop sits on. I've never folded on it.

you ask questions like a noob but signed up as a veteran with your FLDC passkey for your EVGA name to double your profits. im sure you can open up the control panel and figure it out.

I'm in the same boat.  I just guessed.   I hope that's okay.

why do people sign up for free stuff without even understanding what they signup to do?

What "free stuff" no one told me!

Essentially, it varies, but I need to know if there is an upper or lower limit I can put into the form.

And it wouldn't have mattered if you did say that "I can't" or I shouldn't".  Don't make this more complicated than it needs to be.

I'm not sure but I think I put 60k a day for the contest but I think my 770 (as long as it doesn't die) will produce a bit more then that.

That's OK tank, Mountain needs all the help they can get.

Mountain Needs no help we are just missing a few folders that we use to have like old slow gamer and a few others we where mostly big adv folders . Got to keep your home warm some how in the colder months

DutchForce is the most generous person I've met! His generosity goes way back wen I was building a rig for a kid with MD. You're a great man!

Most people probably don't know even half of the things he does behind the scenes that go largely unnoticed.  Once in a while I'm lucky enough to hear about it or see it.  But there are many many others on this team that are also incredibly generous (and often working behind the scenes as well)...
That kid (young man) is still around, he ended up finishing his masters degree. Good to see you too pgmoney
I know the phrase is used around here often...but best folding team on the planet!

Yes true! I didn't mean to discount any other members generosity. I'm just always amazed at this team. I wish I could do more folding for the team but I can't afford to upgrade my card right now.

Hey Tank Long time no see. I remember when you all did that build for that kid was one of the best things I ever saw on these forums. Yeah your right this team has always been very generous from the time I joined.

That young man is still with us and finished is masters degree. Good to see you pgmoney

That is awesome Tank, glad to hear that. Good to see a lot of people I have not seen in a while.

  • Keep in mind that registration ends tonight and anyone that registers after 9 PM tonight may not get into the contest as we need time to get the teams, stats, and website up and running.
  • Get ready to fire up those folding rigs - the 2016 Time Zone Challenge kicks off at midnight tomorrow!

I know I haven been on the forums in a while but I use to be very active on this team. I also remember our team being more helpful and not jumping all over someone for asking a question.
No matter a persons personal intentions, if they are folding they are doing good for the community.

Folding whatever I can :o)

Ok, we're coming in to the last hours of accepted signups and I feel the need to drive home the importance of having work units actually produced for the team before the contest starts.
So far, we're only missing work from 'logista', so if someone could kindly nudge them to ensure work shows up before the 9pm Eastern time cutoff.

And I'm gonna put my foot down, too. Any signups that show up after 9, unless they are for points adjustments, will be ignored as I am too busy with projects at work over the next week to babysit and make sure the numbers line up properly.

Otherwise, until then, Bring the Pain! This Pimp wants to have his stats system pushed to the limits!

This chart on the gpu-projects-ppd-database page should help you figure out what your PPD may be.
Remember, this is an estimate we are asking for and we encourage adding hardware to increase production during the Challenge!!  The main point of this Challenge is to have fun while increasing our chances of finding the WU that breaks open a new discovery for The Cure!!

Sure there will be accusations of sandbagging and other tomfoolery during the Challenge, but that is all part of the fun.  Your production during the Challenge does not influence your chance to receive one of the Folding Gifts as shown by the rules:
Gift Eligibility:
  • To be eligible for the gift drawing, participants must continue to fold within the contest rules through the entire duration of the contest and fold a minimum of 400,000 points.
    • We recognize that all participants do not have the same level of hardware and exceptions to this will be granted prior to the start of the contest if you are unable to reach that threshold.  To be granted an exception, contact troy8d via PM on the EVGA forums
  • If unforeseen circumstances arise during the contest, that impact your ability to participate they must be promptly be reported and addressed at the time they occur to remain eligible for the drawing.
  • Each contestant may only win one gift.

Sign up with an estimate of your production and have fun!!!!

I'd also like to add the fact that the prize pool is what has been DONATED BY THE FOLDERS IN THE CHALLENGE.
I myself will be a "donor" I have to see how something pans out before committing to the pool.

I hope the prize donation pool stays open until end of the contest. Like howdy2u2, the next 2 weeks will determine if I can add some more stuff.

For those that have no clue what their PPD are going to be maybe you should have been Folding for the last week or so to get your Estimated PPD.
I did mine a week or so ago way in time for the TZC.
After All we are All Folders and we should know our own hardware and how well it can Fold.
Is all I am saying!

Ok Chaps and Chapess's, I'm in!
I'm not sure I'll make the startline on time but, barring technical issues, I should be contributing 24-48hrs after.
BRING

After some thought, I have relented and allowed the last three entrants into the system.  We're REALLY locked down now, however. Anyone that signs up after BadBertie on that list is just sitting on the sidelines.

This places us at a grand total of 173 participants at the starting gun of the TZC! Heck yeah!! Let's get those beasts purring and fold us some PROTEINS!
