Hello!

I have bought a GTX 980 Ti Hybrid, and is planning on putting it in my 5 year old computer with these specs:

MB  : Asus Maximus 4 Extreme-z , z68 chipset, Socket 1155 , PCi-E 2.0 x16 , DDR3
CPU : Intel i7 2600K , OC @ 3,8Ghz
PSU : Corsair TX850M , 850Watt
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1666Mhz 16gb CL9

So the big question. Will i get problems with putting a GTX 980 Ti Hybrid in this system?
A PCi-E 3.0 card into a MB with PCi-E 2.0 is not gonna be a problem i hope?
Is there any visible bottlenecks with this ?

I appreciate all feedbacks!

well a lot of folks had issues with 900 cards on z68 [the most with sandy cpu's ]   some worked fine some needed a latest bios update support that was compatible for the newer cards   some were just S.O.L   and a no go ?? also needs uefi bios as well

just be sure you use your boards latest bios   and then figures crossed

look things up like theses as example

https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?54511-Max-IV-Extreme-Z-Error-B2-not-booting-at-all!

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/788289/geforce-900-series/computer-won-t-boot-past-bios-after-installing-new-gtx-970/2/

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/850049/980ti-with-z68-chipset-not-compatible-/

900 and newer cards can be  ''funny''

stick it in and see  ? I hope it works fine   I sure like my hybrid   and hope you get to as well

good luck

never know until you try it  ?  may fire right up and work fine and as expected ?   may need the latest bios  ?     thing is go to like that asus forum or any forum  and look up like boards and like cards and see what's what  ..   you may also see some brand of cards work better the other brands  like in the 970 cards MSI seemed to have the best luck   and some asrock z68 boards  had bad luck  ?

your at the point of  you buy you try and hope it don't make you cry  ...   just look things up on your build and see whats said or any issues or resolves to take incase  something pops up and be ready

you dont see as many issues as there was when the 900 series was like at first release so by now maybe adjustments were made like to these later 900 cards having revised v-bios for better overall compatibility ??

I just talked to a friend of mine who said he has all the new parts i need to get this to work if my old system wont accept the card :) . He has new MOBO , CPU and RAM for me at a good price so i think everything will work out :).

By the way mister. How does your hybrid card perform and have you overclocked yours ?

I like it so far so good ?   i'll better know after the 3 years are up [lol]      I have oc'ed  it some but I don't do it or use it all that much . out of the box  stock does all I ask of it fine out of the box stock boost was 1355  over the speced 1228 I guess that's good ?  I'm sure theres better or worse as well  so far max temp only been 48c   but average is about 43-45c  max  so far

theres some hybrid post here I posted a few thing on my card to go look at if it helps any, nothing fancy ?    in the end as of today all I can say is I'm satisfied  and do think it a bit better then I expected in some areas   better boost over speced stated boot -  cooler temps then I thought I would get   no fan issues you sometimes read about  on some ?

I guess it all about that luck of the draw on the card you end up with  ??   so for now my only concern is how long lasting is the hybrid pump going to hold out for   only time will tell on that and how if still under warrantee how evga will handle it    cause they don't sell a replacement / hybrid kit for it  anymore  [pretty sad on there part ]

I think you will be fine , maybe need the latest motherboards bios at most  .    I guess you will know for sure after you install the card  where you stand

Re: EVGA GTX 980 Ti Hybrid on a 5 year old computer possible ? 2016/09/30 09:03:10 (permalink)
980 Ti's love low temperatures when overclocking is involved. On air my 980 Ti Classified can only hit around 1454MHz and be 100% stable, but with an AIO cooler it can hit 1525MHz if ambient temps are in the 60s (1500 normally). With my Gigabyte 980 Ti G1 Gaming with the same AIO cooler (Kraken X41 and the Kraken G10 bracket) my card can hit 1580Mhz, and on air it can only do 1500Mhz.

It isn't a big difference putting a single 980 Ti under water, but if you are OCing as a hobby or min/maxing there is a benefit.

I do notice I don't see the down clocking  with the hybrid as reported like on air cards ???  I guess it don't ever hit that temp threshold  some start to down clock as low as 60c  I seen reported ..
seems  with a non reference pcb does help out on higher clocks  ??   I just went up to  1475  for all around everything use  when I feel to run it oc'ed   higher woirks well in a lot of things but can issue up in others   like may crash / artifact or something in one out of 10  particular program or game ??  I guess its back to luck of the draw

I just was looking at this thread [its a year old so you should have a newer revised bios   theres now a later bios over the one my card has on it now ]

''I have same problem with asus maximus IV extreme'' [joacpro]
http://forums.evga.com/Whats-wrong-with-my-GTX-980-TI-Is-anyone-else-having-issues-m2361156.aspx

this guy reported a later  hybrid bios here ??   weather or not it helps anything , but it is a later revision  ??  [I don't see ramdom black screens here with the 84.00.32.00.94 bios but I do have Samsung memory not Hynix ]

I use the dvi-I on my hybrid for  all monitors I use    even my old d-sub crt monitors   with the in the box adaptor that comes with the card --   so unless you using a 4k monitor dvi-I should be good ..

http://forums.evga.com/dvii-port-trouble-m2555773.aspx

I assume after all that he just got a defective card ??   but dvi-I  works well for me here  [for my modern displays and hdtv's  I use a dvi-I to hdmi  cable  ]

[ for example ]
http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Ft-DVI-DVI-I-Male-to-HDMI-Male-Cable-Dual-Link-24-5-/181361164214

I got a old single link cable dvi-I end  but a dual link would be better   also  you got to determine  if you need the dvi-I end or the dvi-d end    that can be important     dvi-I and dvi-d don't do the same functions  dvi-I has greater support  but you also need a card that's has dvi-I    cause it has 4 extra pins  that dvi-d don't
[around the flat bar pin]

look at the specs on each and see  there limitations   ''  Video signal / Bitrate''  part
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

so if dvi-I was working well on your old card it should do just as well on the new card

Found 11 users running the same motherboard/cpu with a 980 ti. You should have 0 issues. Just make sure your motherboard bios is fully up to date before installing the 980 ti.

I Have a X-58 EVGA motherboard with 83 bios and I am using a EVGA GTX980ti Hybrid, and only problem I have is once in a blue moon screen goes totally black for 3 seconds then come right back to normal. Usually when Playing MWF3. When browsing internet it is fine.

Yeah this is gonna be great...i have had my computer for 5 years without upgrades....if you disregard a GTX 760 burning up after 1 weeks use.....dunno what happened....thought my whole apartment was on fire due to the smell...then blue flashes from the card...then utter and total silence......

I have gotten more useful help on this forum in one day that i have gotten on all the other different forums combined......really nice people in here....thumbs up to you all :)

i also have to say i got a great deal on my card. only 410 dollars for a 6 month old card is really good here in norway. i have the receipt...so if it doesent work properly i can send it in and get around 800 dollars back...or a new card....if they still have them in stock....otherwise i might get the 1080 Hybrid as the best next replacement....which im hoping for :)

and your getting a x2 your money back guarantee as well ?? hmmmm.......

that all sounds interesting     my card new was about that price  here in the u.s at newegg  at one time and that's with out me sending In for the 30 buck rebate [I don't do rebates ]     I now ssee there back up to that 700 buck mark  today ?? hard to do that with the 1080 hybrid at $729 coming soon ?

In norway it cost 794 dollars brand new to be correct. If i have a problem with the card...it still has warranty on it. So then you either get your money back or a brand new card. if they have more of them in stock. otherwise they compensate by giving you a newer card..which i would think was the 1080 hybrid :)

well ok.   now if you go with a 1080 or any 10 series card  you asked about the dvi in a post above    the 10 series cards only have dvi- ''D''   and not the dvi-''I''     so if needed to use you may need to plan on that     dvi-d will work in a dvi-I with out analog support  as you can read from the winki link I gave    dvi-I with the 4 extra pins don't allow it to fit in a dvi-d

anyway when you get a card  900 or 10 series let us know how it worked out

Ok :) . Im sorry for late update but im happy to announce that the EVGA GTX 980 Ti Hybrid works flawless with my old computer. No problems what so ever.

MB  : Asus Maximus 4 Extreme-z , z68 chipset, Socket 1155 , PCi-E 2.0 x16 , DDR3
CPU : Intel i7 2600K , OC @ 4,0Ghz
PSU : Corsair TX850M , 850Watt
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1666Mhz 16gb CL9

The card is idling on 32 degrees Celsius and maxes out on 50 :)

allready overclocked it and found a sweetspot at +145mhz on boostclock and +500 on memory with no overvoltage :) . So now my boostclock is at 1512mhz, and memory @ 4000mhz

Im super happy about the card and its absolutely an awesome upgrade from the old Asus GTX 580 :P

Thanks for all the help guys. Great forum with great people!

I just now saw this, but I was going to say lol, I've been running on an Asus P8p67 motherboard with a 2600k for about five years now (upgrading gpu as I go along) and currently have a 980TI Hybrid on it. No problems!
