Minecraft is fairly minimal on the graphics requirements. You should be fine provided your java install is more current. I doubt it requires a very powerful graphics card. I can play it on my older Gateway laptop which only has integrated graphics from the system itself.

Yes. More Ram is a good idea if you only have 512 mb. I'm sure Windows and other programs running in the background are eating most if not all of that up.

You answered you own question. Buy more ram.

Since you're 32-bit Windows, get a 2x2GB kit and call it good.

My personal suggestion would be this:

Here's a Link to a Newegg page listing 2gb laptop memory that will work for you. They range between $25 and $35 U.S. Dollars. Quite cheap.
You can put up to 4gb (2x2gb sticks) in that micro-ATX board.

Are you sure he uses laptop form factor dimms? Looked like regular ddr2 to me on the Newegg pics of his mobo.

Here is his mobo and I superimposed a regular DDR2 dimm next to the slot for reference. Notice the slot alignment. Looks like regular DDR2 to me.

The memory base is DDR2 667 speed RAM. I would go with Brad's suggestion on memory. More memory will do wonders with the response on XP systems after you breach that 1.5GB memory area. Usually when you see it's using more memory than you physically have then it's spooling to the cache swap file which is why you are seeing lag spikes. Just please be sure to adjust your swap space to be within accordance to the new memory size when you put the additional on your motherboard. Generally on the older OS it is recommended to be 1.5x(Physical RAM)=<New Swap File size>. You'll see a world of difference.

All the ram I saw in Newegg that was 2x2GB DDR2, the most cost effective brand I trusted was that G.Skill. It was $2 more than the cheapest matched set. The cheapest was $55.

You could go 2 x 1GB set, but you're shorting yourself to half your maximum capacity of ram for 32-bit Windows. An alternate option is get a single 2GB DDR2 dimm and get a second one when you can afford it. Make sure they're matched though. That's the main reason why I suggested buying both sticks at once in a kit.
