As a special case, the three naturally occurring isotopes of the element are often specified as H for 1H (), D for 2H (), and T for 3H (). This convention is easier to use in chemical equations, replacing the need to write out the mass number for each atom. For example, the formula for may be written D2O instead of 2H2O.
