Of the 94 naturally occurring elements, 83 are considered  and either  or weakly radioactive. The remaining 11 naturally occurring elements possess  too short for them to have been present at the beginning of the , and are therefore considered transient elements. Of these 11 transient elements, 5 (, , , , and ) are relatively common  of  and . The remaining 6 transient elements (, , , , , and ) occur only rarely, as products of rare decay modes or nuclear reaction processes involving uranium or other heavy elements.

The known elements have atomic numbers from 1 through 118, conventionally presented as . Before chemistry became a ,  had designed arcane symbols for both metals and common compounds. These were however used as abbreviations in diagrams or procedures; there was no concept of atoms combining to form . With his advances in the atomic theory of matter,  devised his own simpler symbols, based on circles, to depict molecules.

As a special case, the three naturally occurring isotopes of the element  are often specified as H for 1H (), D for 2H (), and T for 3H (). This convention is easier to use in chemical equations, replacing the need to write out the mass number for each atom. For example, the formula for  may be written D2O instead of 2H2O.
