Online in Japan, the kanji 笑, read as "warau" and meaning laugh, is often used the same way we use "lol." From this, people began to use the letter "w" to the same effect. When multiple are used (i.e. wwwwww), it looks like grass, and so the kanji 草, read as "kusa" and meaning grass, can now be used to indicate laughter.

Why do you get on the left side of a horse?:
You have to go back to ancient times when horses were used as war mounts. Soldiers carry their swords on the left side (to reach with their right hand) and so they could only mount from the left or they would sit on their sword.
