Saw this on reddit. It's for the 3080 FTW3, but should apply to the 3090, I think.

that is wrong I tried following something similar and didn't turn out good, vrm 2mm is to short had to use stacked 2+1 to make it 3mm, vrm 1mm is to short had to use 1.5mm, memory 2mm is to short had to use 1+1mm stacked on paper it should be 2 but stacked I think gives it that little extra, back plate used 3mm all around. This is for the 3080 I have not done my 3090 yet. and holy **** took it apart 3 times to get it right cause the post I was following had the same spec listed. Wasted a bunch of pads and thermalright pads aren't cheap. Just an FYI for other users who want to do it.

Wow! Thanks! I just ordered a bunch of pads that may not work...
So does anyone have a definite answer to what thickness of pads that should be used and where?!

The thickness that the EVGA tech guy stated, you can't buy, so I'm wondering if he was talking about the distances separating the components from the heatsink?

I'm so confused about this!

heres what I did in the blue, stock temps were hitting thermal limits within seconds, after pad replacement im at like 86 temp at 65 fan memory junction

i use on 3080 ftw3
memory 2mm thermal pads (Iceberg Thermal DriftICE 13w/mk + thermal paste ALPHACOOL Phobya NanoGrease Extreme 3.5g 16W/mK)
backplate 2+1mm
vrm stock because thermal on vrm is fine
chokes 1mm (Iceberg Thermal DriftICE 13wt/mk)
memory themperature drops -20C and all is touched the radiator

Thanks for your updates. Appreciate the time/effort you put in.
I've noticed my VRAM temps creep up on my 3090 over a short period of ownership (less than one month). I believe the gradual flexing of the card might be (ever so slightly) separating the thermal pads from the back plate. Just a hunch, no hard evidence. Looking at changing those pads, and I might use your 3mm suggestion.

Was thinking about this tonight; wouldn't the VRAM back plate pads heights vary between the 3080 and the 3090? The 3080 does not have memory modules on the back (or I guess top) of the card while the 3090 does? I personally don't have a 3080 to check but that was my understanding.

Of course it will be different. At 3090, the backplate will need to use 2 or 2.5 mm pads (they can be squeezed, if it is too high)

Memory is 2.25mm, VRM 2.85mm, back VRAM is 2mm

same for 3080/3090 FTW3 Hybrid kit?
