Yes, I have tried it. I wouldn't run my kingpin without it. It will prevent you from running into the 118% power limit in unigine superposition as shown here.

Flashing does not work for me

Ok, do the following to flash from usb...
 
#1 Follow this guide to create a bootable usb drive.
#2 Copy the nvflash folder into the usb drive.
#3 Restart your computer and boot into the usb drive.
#4 Type "cd nvflash" without quotes to gain access to the nvflash folder.
#5 Type nvflash64 --protectoff to turn off write protection on the video card.
#6 Type nvflash64 6798X390.rom to flash the card.
 
Note: If nvflash64 doesn't work try just using normal nvflash, so you'll type nvflash instead of nvflash64.
