How do you have your hard drive(s) set up? One of the stability issues with that motherboard was with the driver for the controller. Changing the controller from NVIDIA to the Microsoft generic controller fixed a lot of stability issues I was having.

Enter BIOS and Load Defaults from the main screen, Save & Exit. Run a pass of Intel Burn Test to quickly check for CPU stability and note maximum Core Temperature using Real Temp..Be sure CPU Thermal Control is set to TM1 & TM2 in the BIOS. Run a pass of Memtest86+ from USB to quickly check memory stability..Or run the Memory Diagnostics Tool In Windows 10. Run Superposition to check graphics performance. If you continue to have issues, fill out the BIOS template below so we can see what your settings are..This is a generic 790i BIOS template ( provided by Delirious) and some settings will not be shown on some 790i models..If any settings are on [Auto], specify that and what the value is. You should also set your CMD8GX3M4A1600C8 RAM to Corsair's tested speed, timing and voltage along with a Command Per Clock rate of 2T in the BIOS. No problemo..Just wanted to first make sure your BIOS settings are optimized/looking good..You can fill out the template and post it when you get a chance. 790i boards are known to be kinda picky about RAM, especially if running 4GB modules or all the DIMM slots are populated. I had an EVGA 790i FTW for a long time with a Q6600 (G0 stepping) running at 3.6GHz..I liked it, it worked well.

CORSAIR DOMINATOR 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMD8GX3M4A1600C8 that's your issue. take out two dimms. use the black slots with only two and test again. Let us know what happens.

those dimms say 1600MHz at CAS latency of 8-8-8-24. Have you tried using an XMP profile- (not at my 790i and can't remember if it allowed this) ? setting voltage to 1.65 ( I believe that to be the spec)

Hopefully setting a 2T Command Per Clock and/or using only 2 RAM modules fixes your issue, or helps narrow it down. Anyway, I'll just mention a couple things about a couple things here. CPU Thermal Control: Enable TM1 & TM2 (Thermal Monitor 1 & 2) Be advised that CPU Thermal Control is a safety feature..CPU Thermal Control allows for the processor to downclock when cores hit the TjMax temperature..When cores hit the TjMax temperature, a PROCHOT signal is asserted and downclocking is initiated in an effort to keep the processor from overheating..If CPU Thermal Control is not enabled, no downclocking will occur and the processor could reach the THERMTRIP temperature, which is about 20C higher then the PROCHOT temperature..When THERMTRIP is asserted, the mobo will turn off voltage to the processor and shut it (and consequently your PC) down..Intel does not guarantee a processor will recover from a THERMTRIP event (such as could be caused by a catastrophic processor cooling failure or insufficient cooling) without damage..Depending on the stepping, the TjMax temperature for a Q6600 is either 80C or 90C. See: PROCHOT and THERMTRIP on page 79 of the Intel Q6600 Datasheet (PDF). Intel SpeedStep: Enable Intel Speedstep allows for the processor to dynamically adjust frequency depending on processor utilization; To run at maximum speed when needed and to downclock when not needed..This can save power, decrease temperature, and reduce wear and tear on the processor (electromigration), especially when overclocked/overvolted..It may be preferable to have the processor downclock rather than running at full speed/voltage all the time..Setting Windows to use a High performance power plan will override that BIOS setting, you would need to use the Balanced or Power saver plan for Speedstep to work. You can search for C1E Enhanced Halt State and Execute Disable Bit to see what they do and decide if you want them enabled..I always had them enabled along with CPU Thermal Control and SpeedStep. Q6600 processors were known to be excellent overclockers, depending on the Stepping (G0 is best) and chip quality, but your processor cooling needs to be good enough..Overclocking a Q6600 is easy to do and will definately increase system performance and responsiveness..A moderate overclock would be in the 3.0GHz to 3.2GHz neighborhood and should be a walk in the park..I would do that for sure, but overclocking anything is totally at your own risk..If you need help with that or anything else, just holler, and completely fill out the BIOS template. There's the very good 790i Stability and Overclocking Guide written by Delirious that you should read. Another thing I'll add is that 790i mobos and lower voltage RAM (1.5V - 1.65V) may not play well together, they like the stuff that runs a higher VDIMM (1.8V - 2.0V or more)..You can increase the VDIMM 0.1V per JEDEC specs so that your modules are running at 1.75V if neccessary.

You can likely find Windows 10 drivers for your legacy/discontinued motherboard at Station Drivers..Look there. Make sure to manually set the Memory Voltage to 1.5 volts and the timing to 9-9-9-24-2T. Still need voltages for these..If any are on [Auto], specify that and what the Current Value is. **System Voltages** CPU Core: CPU FSB: Memory: nForce SPP: nForce MCP: What's the temperature of the GTX 580 and Q6600 getting up to?..You can use Real Temp to find out. When you say it 'crashes', does it restart or shut down?..Freeze?..BSOD?..What exactly? Any hardware/software errors in Windows Event Viewer that might give a clue?..You can use this .bat file in Option One to clean old events and clutter from Event Viewer..Right click it and Run as administrator.

Hello everyone, Just wanted to pop in and I guess become a part of this and help in any way that I can. The rig that jbonez89 is currently running is a very, very old rig of mine (as you have probably guessed lol). I refurbished it and did a few updates to it. Then him and I "rebuilt" it together and once I thought we had it stable I sent it on its way with him. Basically saying, "hey this thing isn't doing any good for me, use it as long as you'd like until you get something of your own." Anyhow, I wanted to thank everyone here for the help thus far you have been providing my friend. I directed him here because things became over my head. I didn't know which direction to point him next. Him and I are still trying to resolve this and get that thing running stable. I really wanted to provide a fun gaming experience for him and still intend on doing so. He's a pretty busy guy and can't always get the information back to you guys right away so I'm just here saying that he is hoping to get back here with all the answers to the voltage questions and temp questions soon. This is his first "gaming" computer and i've been trying to help like I said but you guys know much more than me. Not saying I'll be of any help but I want to. Thanks again

That's cool..It's always great to have the previous owner chime in on stuff and provide some history of the rig and what changed from the time it was stable until now. Virtually anything can cause the problem..From hardware to wonky/incorrect/outdated drivers to compatibility issues to BIOS settings..So sometimes it can be a real bear to nail it down. So, if it was stable before and now it's not, something or things changed to make it unstable and it would help to know what changed. Station Drivers has a new Realtek HD Audio Driver for Win10 you can try..You can uninstall the NVIDIA HD Audio in Device Manager..You can also disable HD Audio in Device Manager and play without sound just for troubleshooting purposes. There's also Troubleshooting in Control Panel to check for issues with Hardware and Sound. But first it's important to make sure the BIOS settings look good..That's the most basic starting point. I would put the other 2 sticks of RAM back in for now (black slots as Delirious said) instead of the lower 1.5V stuff..Then raise the Memory Voltage 0.1 volts above the 1.65V spec to 1.75V and manually set the Frequency/Timing to specs with a 2T Command Rate. If it becomes too much of a pain, it might be a good idea just to clear CMOS and maybe reinstall Windows 10 and begin again with all default settings at first..You can also Reset this PC in All Settings -> Update & Security -> Recovery.

I don't see anything in your BIOS settings that jumps out at me as being a problem..But try the settings below. FSB - Memory Clock Mode: [Linked] FSB - Memory Ratio: [Sync] CPU Core: [1.4] (For now, if core temps are okay, below 80C or so under load)
* Corsair Obsidian 450D Mid-Tower - Airflow Edition * ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC) * Intel i7-8700K @ 5.0 GHz * 16GB G.SKILL Trident Z 4133MHz * Sabrent Rocket 1TB M.2 SSD * WD Black 500 GB HDD * Seasonic M12 II 750W * Corsair H115i Elite Capellix 280mm * EVGA GTX 760 SC * Win7 Home/Win10 Home * "Whatever it takes, as long as it works" - Me

Manually set the FSB (QDR), MHz to CPU's native FSB frequency of 1066MHz..Link and Sync the memory to the CPU's native FSB frequency of 1066MHz so it also runs at 1066MHz for now..Raise the CPU voltage to 1.4V for now..Set the CMD8GX3M4A1600C8 memory timings and voltage to the rated 8-8-8-24-2T 1.65V with only 2 sticks in the physical second and fourth slots (logical DIMM Slots 2 and 3 in the Motherboard Manual). See if that works. Also set CPU Thermal Control to TM1 & TM2.
