How hot is "real hot"? There are some components on the card which can handle close to water boiling temperature, or more, so, yes, "hot" can be normal.

Hot to the touch? Hot feeling exhaust air? Hot in GPU monitoring software? How hot in GPU monitoring software?

77C is perfectly normal. The max temp of most 10 series cards is around 92C, but most low to mid range cards (I consider the 1070 mid range) don't usually go past 80C.

You can always set a more aggressive fan profile by using MSI Afterburner or EVGA's PrecisionX (which is buggy compared to Afterburner).

77C is a bit on the "too warm" side - kick the fans up some, most video card makers in the last few years set a default fan profile in the card with too much "worried about quiet" vs "worried about overheating shortening the lifespan of the card".

Most current generation GPUs have NO excuse to exceed 70C during gaming, and really shouldn't even be pushing THAT hot.

I wouldn't be overly concerned with 77C under load.

But to answer your question, the Maximum GPU Temperature for a 1070 GPU chip is 94C (see the full specs) as specified by NVIDIA..The card will throttle clock speed/voltage at 83C as shown in the EVGA Precision Temp Target or the Temp Limit in MSI Afterburner in an effort to keep temp in check.

I might however see if I could maybe get the temp down some..Could be poor airflow in your PC case, take the side panel off and see if it matters much..Could be high ambient room temp..Limiting framerate or enabling Vertical Sync might help..You can always create a custom fan speed curve in Precision as stated above, you should..But 77C is nothing to get real excited about, no biggie, don't sweat it much.

Like I said earlier, EVGA's PrecisionX or MSI Afterburner (only use one at a time, having both installed and running can cause BSODs). It's under settings, monitoring, and must be turned on and what you want to view selected.

No, but the lack of side fans on your case certainly isn't helping. The ACX / iCX cards depend heavily on case airflow as they just dump heat right into the case. Don't believe me? Take the side of your case off and compare your gaming temps.

And again, 77C isn't bad. It. Isn't. Bad.

EVGA Precision XOC and MSI Afterburner have on-screen display of temperature, but Precision's OSD has been known to not work in some games.

1 issue i have right off the bat after seeing your setup is.. get rid of the bridge!

The left fan is for the gpu and you have another card directly below the gpu card that's blocking the exhaust from the main gpu fan! So with that being said the air can't pass threw the fins and out the bottom cause the card below is blocking it off!

Put the gpu in normal without thr bridge and see what happens.

Also it would be so much cooler with a fan hole cut on the side glass for a fan blowing directly at the card.

    It does significantly!

Temps are going to be easily 10c or higher simply because vertical mounting suffocates the GPU since it's a open air fan cooling design. You should install it normally and your temps will reduces significantly. Numerous tests have been done regarding how poor cooling vertical GPU mounting is on youtube. You also want 10 series Nvidia GPU's to be as cool as possible for maximum boost clock. These GPU's start reducing when they reach 58c. If you cool your GPU better by leaving the auto fan profile and creating your own you will see better performance because GPU boost will be boosting your clocks higher. Personally I have mine set to 57% fan speed while gaming and it keeps it a nice cool 61-63c.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the 10 series cards will throttle until they hit around the 82-83 degree celcius range.

I could be wrong, but I think he is using the Genome II case.  That case has very little room to breathe (Only like 3/4 of an inch between the GPU shroud and the left panel).

Correct, the card doesn't  "throttle" at 58c.  But, he didn't say "throttle", did he?  The GPU boost starts dropping in 13 MHz steps starting at around 58c.  GPU boost dropping is not defined as throttling.  Throttling is when the frequency drops below base clock.  GPU boost is above base clock.  They are different things and they happen at different temperatures.  If you want higher boost, you have to keep the core temperature down to around 58c, as close as the fan noise annoyance allows, or lower.

The first drop is actually around 43C. I've seen it on my AIO watercooled 1080 Ti FE that usually stays around 40C, but can get a bit higher depending on the game. Yay GPU Boost 3.0!

And it could feasibly be lower as I don't have a water chiller to get it lower than 30 to 35C.

My 1080yi ftw3 elite on a ek block gets 31-34c temps on load and really temps are not effecting the drops in clocks it's the damn power limit.

Evga is claiming that new nvidia drivers will allow the power to go over 117%.. currently its a known issue with the ftw3 and kingpin cards.. who knows it might be an issue with all custom evga 1080ti cards.
