i have installed win10 with startisback on my system and today i noticed that the Z key on the keyboard was not working. (keyboard is ibm sk-8825 usb) like this onei installed the keyboard on another w7 machine and works just fine.(on both machines keyboards is installed as HID keyboard device) back to my pc i noticed some strange things. shift + z : works fine give me Z (capital) z + s : open the search like if i press windows key + s same goes for z + r : start run ,like windows key + r z + x : same as windows key + x but z key alone does nothing windows key works only the left key ,the right is not working. first time i saw such a problem.any ideas?

I would try flashing the firmware on the keyboard. Also try going into the software and under lighting see if you can turn off the LED on the Z-key when pressing it. I would also use the key cap puller and see if you notice anything wrong with the Z-key switch.

Did you use another keyboard before that might still have software installed? I also was thinking about any macros that might be set up.

thanks fore your replys. a generic usb keyoard works fine. tryed installing drivers on the ibm keyboard ,same problem. i have installed windows using a generic ps2 keyboard and later replaced the keyboard,have not see any software installed . Hoggle

for which software are you talking about ? flash what firmware?

The EVGA software should ask if you want to flash to firmware .72 Inside the folder for the EVGA Unleashed software you should find a file that is labeled 1.05 which will flash it to .73. The other one which I think is 1.02 will flash it to .72 you could try whichever to see if it changes anything. why i would want to install evga software ? my keyboard is IBM.

I was thinking of the z10 keyboard. It’s kind of late and got sidetracked thinking Z key on Win10. Trying to think of anything that might be using the key as a mapping. Probably would be good to see what happens when you start windows in safe mode since that skips loading software. I am also guessing you have tried multiple USB ports? Also would be worth looking at all the USB ports to see if anything looks out of place as well as the PS/2. If you have a USB to PS/2 adapter you could use it to see if the Z key works when using it that way.

I agree with Hoggle in trying multiple USB ports such as USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. Make sure you try ports directly off of the motherboard.

safe mode : same problem
tryed all usb ports 2.0 and 3.0 same problem
ps2 to usb adpater is not working (very few keyboards work with that adaptor)
boot with another windows version (w10 pe) ,keyboard works fine.

The only thing I can think of is to check the keyboard language layouts. That can do funny things to keys (ie. Multilingual setting). Another thing, uninstall Startisback and if prompted to delete the settings, do it. See if the key behaviour maintains. If so, you might want to try Classic Shell.

keyboard language is US ,i tryed to change it same problem
removed startisback same.
i think its time to go back to win7 or will try reinstall windows with this keyboard on

One thing I was thinking is seeing if accessibility option somehow got enabled in Windows. I was thinking that you can set any time limit you want on how long you have to hold down a key before it registers the keystroke to make it easier for people with disabilities to use the keyboard. Sometimes keyboard shortcuts to enable those features get hit by accident or by cats walking across keyboards. It might also be good to pull up the virtual keyboard and see if the Z key works when you mouse over and hit the key.

already tryed the virtual keyboard and z key is not showed there ,unless i press shift + z. *edit* found another pc with the same keyboard as mine,installed that keyboard on my setup works fine,install my "faulty" keyboard on the other pc works fine. everybody is happy.
