Hi all - I have 6 1TB Caviar Black drives and I'd like to put them in a RAID.  I don't want to stripe it RAID 0 because of the potential data loss.  I'd like either RAID 10 or RAID 5, preferably the former.

Does this board support 10?  The manual says so but I don't see any reference as what's needed to set it up.

Thanks!

Can you do two three-drive stripes then mirror them?

Got them set up in RAID10 but its only allowing me to do 4 disks.

Is it possible to get all 6 disks in RAID 10?

    I can do 6 disks in RAID0, but not RAID 10 :(

4 drive RAID 10 is the max supported by the Intel ICHR SB controllers:

    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-028610.htm

You can do 6 drive RAID 5 but from what I've seen....RAID 5 performance on the ICH10R is pretty poor.  Can also go RAID 1 or RAID 0 for those last 2 drives and RAID 10 for the 4 drives.

Sadly Raid 10 is only suported with 4 drives.. i have 2 spares i would love to set up like this to... heh.

Raid 5 performance is.. tricky. You have to Inatalize the Raid after its created before you will get full speed and performance... and with the bigger the drives the longer that takes.. and the rebuilds take even longer if a drive fails. im talking days with 1TB drives.

    After thats done it Owns.

you can not use the current Intel Matrix Storage Manager drivers (8.9)... other wise you will have random drives "failures and errors"

use eather a Older version or the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers.
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/intel%20raid.htm (9.5.0.1037) recomended... i had such  a pain in the ass  with the Matrix drives.. in any kinda raid random drives would fail.

Damnit - was hoping for a 6 drive RAID 10.

What I did instead was put a 4 drive RAID 10 in and RAID 0 the other 2.  I will install my OS to the RAID 0 tonight and use the RAID 10 as storage.

Burning_Kittens can you run HD Tune to show your RAID5 performance?

It WAS 389 MB/s.. but right now im using Raid10

The OS seems to be more snappy and responsive with Raid 10

    That's weird even with a 6 Disk RAID0 I was only getting like 228MB/s

With the drivers i listed? and thats slow even for a 3 disk raid...
What drivers where you using? heck if i create a Raid 0 array with my 4 disks i get over 380 for whatever reason..

give me a hour and i will post a screen shot when i get home... dont have one for my Raid 5 when i used it... i dont think anyways.

I'm using the RST 9.5.6.1001 drivers with no problems at all. They are phasing out the old Matrix storage and the RST are now highly recommended.
