My i7 920 is over 60 degrees in the middle of winter with the stock cooler (no OC).  I have a suspicion that the CPU may be having trouble (gets hotter and hotter, even after cleaning etc.) but I don't want to contact intel and be called a noob and to reset the HS.  I've got a V10 new in box, but I'm not sure If I should use that, or sell it for $100 and get something else.  I've used a V10 in the past and it dropped temps well, but the thing is huge and takes up too much space even in an Antec 1200.  I know if I put it in I'll lose a few hard drives, unless I remove a video card and shuffle them around (again).  I want it all, especially for the price I've paid :P

Pick up a Coolermaster 212+.  They can be had for @$30 or less.  The 212+ Evo is slighlty more money and does cool slightly better but not a big difference.

BTW, have you opened task manager and checked to see if your cpu is working even while at idle?  You might have a virus.  The stock heatsink should be able to keep it much cooler while at idle than the 60's.

What is your Vcore set at?

If you are going to stay stock speeds, ( No OC), anything would be better than the stock cooler, for ease of instalation, with a good price I like the EVGA super cooler, your V10 is a nice cooler, but if you have high rise memory, it can have issues, the V8 is also a nice simple cooler, Note the after market collers, although better for the CPU, move airflow away fron the V-regs, if your going to go with a new cooler, you may want to look at adding a small 40mm fan to direct air through the v reg fins.
    Super cooler

    V-8

If you have room for a hybrid, the Corsair coolers are nice

I used to get near 4ghz speed, whatever I get I want it to be a powerful cooler.  I left the bios on auto pilot, because when I set my own values (1.65 for the ram etc.)  my temps were above 70c, and @ 100 with a mild OC.  My ram is packed @ 6 sticks, V10 will fit, I wonder if I go with another cooler if I'll have to get a stand alone RAM cooler.

For $30 or less the 212+ is probably the best "bang for the buck" cooler available.  For stock speeds or a mild to midrange overclock it will work well.

If you want to spend more, plan on overclocking and want to push it then read as many cooler reviews as you can find and decided what is best for your setup.  After the 212+ I would recommend the Corsair H60 in the @60 price range.  It keeps my 950 at 4.2ghz with 1.425 vcore in the 80's while stress testing.  I am using push/pull fans though.  If the H80 will fit in your setup then that is what I recommend in the @70-80 range.

Anything more than that is not needed unless you are really pusing an overclock and voltage.

Your Vcore drops because you must have speedstep enabled.  That drops the vcore and multi while at idle.  That is normal.

You should check your voltages in the bios to see what they are set at.

Sell the V10 ,   get another CM product

    V6 GT
    212+
    Antec Kuhler
    or the Corsair H70

I think it sounds as if you'd be happier with those

I'm glad to hear a recommendation for an enclosed water cooler.  So many say "full H2O setup, or nothing."  I'd be lying if I said I wasn't scared of a leak, but I find the enclosed systems less intimidating.  the 1200 is setup for WC and has orifices and everything.  If I mount the rad on the back, would the heat drawn from the WC sink be enough so that air pulled from inside the case, and blown out and pulled through the radiator is cool enough to keep the CPU healthy, or would I have to suck air into the case and have it pumped out the top?

My H60 is setup as exhaust.  I tried it setup as both intake and exhaust.  There wasn't a big difference between them in my setup.  If your case good airflow setting it up as exhaust will work fine.

Just for your reference, my I7-920 with stock fan (non-overclocked with hyper/multi-thread enabled) idles about 45 degrees and never gets above 49 degrees in normal daily non-gaming use.

Those Corsair Hydro coolers are nice but I had trouble trying to mount it properly in my ANtec 1200 in 1 of the 2 rear exhaust spots. I was using a H70 and had to use zip ties to hold the radiator to the case ( was lame but worked). Sadly I gave up my Prolimatech Megahalem to a friend for it(the H70 could not mount in his Dark Fleet Mid Tower)..they cool within 1-3C of each other but the Mega was by far much easier to install. As others have said the CM 212+ seems to be a nice cheap cooler, I just bought one for my z68 build so I'll see how well it cools a 2500k in the next couple of days.

Ambient temps are the defining factor here between you and the OP, just as a reference my friends GTX 480 has lower idle and load temps then my 580s. He lives about half mile down the road but he lives in a much older house, 20+ years or more, while ours is less then 12 years.

I will either find a way, or make one.

are we talking about the CPU reading or the core reading.  I've only paid attention to the core temp that I have around 60C, but according to my readings my CPU temp (external?) is in the 40s, and my Cores are in the 60s?  if the CPU reading is what I ought to be going off of, then I guess I am fine for now, but I still don't like how high my core temps are.

I think I like the idea of getting an H100 and putting it in the rear of my 1200, the only thing is mounting it.  Does anyone know of any brackets that ought to hold it in without zip ties?  I don't want to have to cut up my case, resell value (warranty) and all.
