Hi there everyone. I have 2 x58 systems that i built years and years ago, when they were new. I was wanting to upgrade a few things to get me by a few more years before i go all new again. It was several thousand $$$ when i built these systems, and they are running good, but i could get a new processor and ram for less than $200, and ive been contemplating it for a while now.

My big questions is: Can i swap my i7 920 for a Intel Xeon W3690 six core? Is that compatible with the E767 mobo?

I have a E767 with an i7 920 and 6gb triple channel (3 x2gb sticks)
and a E760 with an i7 920 and 12gb triple channel (6 x2gb sticks)

I am mainly using the E767 board with the i7 920, as it is the only one of the 2 that have sata 3 on board. I have a GTX 960 in there presently, that and 40tb (5 x 8tb drives) raid array for movies and what not. I have a EVO860 500gb for the main os drive.

I was thinking about upgrading my just the CPU and Ram. I was wanting to go with a 6 core x58, and like 24gb ram, hopefully just 3 x 8gb sticks. I've learned that running all 6 sticks is very hard on the system, and it becomes very sensitive without way higher voltage on the dimms and cpu. So i wanted to go with more ram and less sticks.

I'm not so worried about finding good ram, but the processor choices are little less plentiful then the ram choices. but I was thinking about swapping my i7 920 for a Intel Xeon W3690 six core. I'm not huge into overclocking anymore, i prefer stability, maybe a little OC, if the hardware plays nicely.

The E767 is the SLI3 board, the xeon should work with no problem. I recommend the w3680, it is a little cheaper and  it is also multiplier unlocked. It will OC to 4ghz easy.
The E760 is an older Classified. I am not sure. Thing to do is buy one for the SLI3, try it in the classified and see. Then report back and let us know.

bill1024, thanks for the reply dude. I will at minimum and first be doing this on tri-SLI E767 (the E760 doesnt really get used, not having sata 3 and no ssd sucks)

Wow, $43 for a 6 core xeon.... man that kinda hurts. I paid THOUSANDS back hen i put these systems 2 together years ago! lol!!! i remember the i7 980x was like $999 at the time. I only dreamed... 6/12 cores for less than $50 now, hellz ya!

Ok, quick question for ya. How do you know which w3680 is unlocked or not? Are all w3680's unlocked? Most of the ones i see online are listed on the chip as w3688, but are being sold as a "w3680". is that correct? And are all the W3680's unlocked?

One other question, i seem to remember something about ram and 1.65 volts being important (or a nightmare?) cant remember entirely. Am i ok to run ddr3 that is rated at 1.5volts, or does it need to 1.65volt dimms?

    here is a w3690 for 80$
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/...f:1&frcectupt=true

It says w3680 right on it.
The memory should not go over 1.65 if I remember right, so 1.5v is fine and up to 1.65v not over

All w3680 and w3690 are multiplier and buss unlocked. The w3670 is only unlocked on the buss. The multiplier is locked.
You can also go with a x5660, or x5675 it is only unlocked by the buss, but they OC very well also
