Hello all,

One of my machines running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 is all of a sudden giving me tons of problems.
It all started when I went to enable the "Telnet Client" in the Windows features dialog box. But it was blank. See picture:

Some Googling suggested running "sfc /scannow" in an administrator CMD window. It said nothing was corrupted. I rebooted my machine, only to find that it now BSODed on startup, even in safe mode! So I used "Windows Startup Repair" to restore to an earlier system restore point. After that, it booted to the desktop just fine.

However, running that command did more bad than good, as after getting my machine to boot again, the problem was not solved.

So, a little more Googling revealed that I should run the Microsoft "Windows 7 System Update Readiness Tool," which I did. Looking at the log file, it turned up a bunch of corruption errors. I uploaded the entire log folder to Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-V1bipqDdfkUFowcVZtdGJRTnM/view?usp=sharing

This didn't solve the problem either. Instead, it created another problem: Now, the software included with my MB that I use to monitor my CPU temp, vCore, MB temp, and others, crashes on launch! See picture:

I definitely do not have a virus, since:
     1) This machine is only connected to the internet once every three months for Windows updates
     2) I run antivirus
     3) I take great care to not insert just any random flash stick. I can guarantee that any removable media I insert is virus-free
     4) I barely have any software installed, since I use this machine exclusively for video / picture editing.

I really don't want to do a clean install.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Going through the CBS.log file within your archive I have found a reference to a corrupt KB within the package update rediness tool. I would never have suggested going through it again as you had already prepared the system and installed the Windows 7 OS. Regardless the KB2973112 is showing as corrupt and may need to be corrected. Additionally you may need to reinstall the ASUS Suite II software from their repository in order to correct the application as more than likely some of the files were replaced with versions from the checking of the system itself.

I am curious to know why your telnet client wasn't being installed from the media on the system itself as normally the .cab files are present for installation. Either way you may need to install some of the applications to more current versions to properly correct the system itself. Additionally I would also recommend looking into your registry hive and have it corrected either using CCleaner (or some other product) in order to remove some erroneous references which may be present.

I would also suggest either using PuTTY, KiTTY or SecureCRT for a telnet client. You'll find they are much easier to manage and allow for more than a single profile to telnet in to other terminals/systems. They also even support SSH of which the localized telnet won't support without CygWIN.

Sorry if you thought I just didn't bother to post anything else.
I never got an email notification of your post for some reason.

It sounds like it isn't going to be an easy fix.

I've made a "system image," on an external drive, so I think I'll try a repair install and see how that goes.

That should fix all of the corruption, right?

Apparently notifications of updates to threads are not being sent either.

In answer to your question: possibly.

A bit more detail about that: while it's possible you can try to recover using a 'system image' of the corrupted OS installer it's possibly not going to resolve the issue readily. It 'may' fix the installation issues but the corrupt KB may be pointing to a different problem which may cause other issues. Mileage varies when recovering or repairing OS files.
