Sooooo. I just got a 4090 FE. I’m replacing my EVGA 3090ti. I’m using the EVGA PerFe gen 5 cable for my 3090ti. Can this also be used on my 4090? I have not found a confirmed answer on this yet.
No, it won't work.
It's only for 30 series (FE and 3090 Ti). It's only 12 pin and lacks the 4 sense pins needed for 40 series.
Explanation:
Sense pins were not on early 30 series FE GPUs, just the 12 pin for power/ground. Sense pins were added to the 3090 Ti, but, were optional (the GPU still works without them). On 40 series they are required, so the GPU won't function if these pins aren't present. The PerFE cable was made during 30 series for the 30 series FE and did work with the 3090 Ti because the pins were optional. EVGA was planning to make an updated cable 16 pin (with sense) for 40 series, but, this was never released.
Third party companies make cables that will work with EVGA PSU's. The sense pins can be grounded in certain ways so they function without a true ATX 3.0 power supply. That's what these third party cables do. For these types of cables, the user needs to make sure the PSU has ample wattage to support the GPU's power demands (same as the trusty 8 pin cables we've been using for years). This is also what the adapter cables that come with the GPU do, you plug 8-pin cables into the adapter and the sense pins are used with the adapter.
A true ATX 3.0 PSU is supposed to have some intelligence and not allow a GPU to pull more power than the PSU can provide. The sense pins can be used to limit the amount of power that that the GPU is "allowed" to pull (well, technically the cable/sense pins are configured properly and the GPU sees this and limits based on the sense pins).
Third party cables:
Cablemod makes one though. Others might too.
