My current system is a 2500K with a very mild overclock and a single 970 gtx. Windows 7 64. I have 8 gigs of ram now but just recently started playing @ 1440P. Will I notice much of a difference if I jump up to 16 gigs of ram? I can run most of my games comfortably but I just got a coupon from newegg for Ram and have a little bit of cash...

Nope, just gaming, watching movies, some video and audio editing and teamviewer for fixing old peoples computers.

16gb may give you a little bit more freedom and responsiveness. If you have a coupon, go for it.

I wouldn't go any less than 16 gigs.

Ok, you guys talked me into it. The discount was only a few bucks but oh well. I 'm sure I may regret not just doing a new build and going with ddr4 and a new mobo/cpu but I think I have a few years of life left in this system.

I'm going to be upgrading soon to the X99, going from DDR3 to DDR4, and of course getting a better CPU. It's always nice to upgrade every few years.

Same here, but waiting to see firm specs and release dates for the Broadwell-E chips...

I always lag behind a little. It seems that my i-5 2500K is still a decent chip and all my games play pretty good @ 1440P so I will probably hold out for a few years. I'm not seeing anything ground breaking coming up anyways.

I think my 2600k is past it's time, and I can't wait to upgrade it. But if you're happy with the 2500, then stay with it.

8GB of memory is usually enough for most people who are gaming. You'll see some benefits if you multitask while gaming (sounds odd but some people do it). For your use, might not see much of a benefit and might be better to put that away in the nest egg for a future build. My 2 cents.

Agreed. I only have 8 gig and I have no issues with any games. I just started playing Fallout 4 and am able to maintain the same average framerate as the review sites who are running at least twice the amount of memory as I have. According to this article http://www.techspot.com/review/1089-fallout-4-benchmarks/, more important that how much ram you have is how fast that ram is as it pertains to Fallout 4.

Well, I figured, I can't afford a new motherboard and cpu set up for a long long time and I can't sli, I already have a good ssd and the jump from my 970 gtx to a 980 gtx is too much money and I just bought a perfect 27" 1440P monitor. It was really the only move I could do that would yield any performance increase. I probably won't see a difference till I start doing some super video editing but oh well. That $40 was burning a hole in my pocket. There are a few times that I have a lot running. Maybe later, I can throw 8 gigs in another motherboard for a new HTPC and sell the other, I don't know. Honestly, I bought it on impulse when I saw the coupon, which is not usually like me.

16GB is great, I'm actually considering going up to 32GB. The more RAM you have, the less the OS offloads onto your page file and makes your SSD last longer.

The ram I ordered should be here today and it is 1333 Mhz. I was looking at the benchmarks for fallout 4 and there is a noticible increase in framerates with ram running at 2400Mhz. My board said it will support 2133 ram. Would I be better off returning it and ordering new ram but only having 8 gigs of the faster ram (for now) since there is a set of the faster ram for the same price?

You could just limit or stop this anyway. I have my pagefile set to start up using 200MB for logging errors etc., and a max of 1024MB. Even if you have 32GB ram and let Windows manage your pagefile, you'll still have a lot of unnecessary read/write activity on your SSD. I've been running my setup this way for close to 2 years without issue with Win7 and on Win10 for a bit over a year. I wouldn't suggest this for anyone running under 8GB system ram. Control panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced Tab > Performance (Settings) > Advanced Tab again > Virtual Memory > Change > Untick the automatic managing of the paging file and tick the "custom Size". In the two open fields, enter your desired intial size, and the Max amount to be used, then click "Set" and you'll be prompted to reboot to take affect.

I know how to change the size of my page file... Every time I have attempted to change my paging file since Vista and newer has resulted in poor performance or blue screens, so I just let the system decide. I noticed when I had 24GB it automatically dropped down dramatically... even then, it seemed like the system was automatically defaulting most processes to happen on the RAM rather than the page file.

SO... more slower ram or less faster ram? It seems that from my google research that more is better but those latest FO4 benchmarks are throwing me off... (and I will mess with my paging file too just because)

This is saying only 2133 and the newegg product page says the same. http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16813128520- Intel® Z68 Express Chipset
Memory - 4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory
* Due to Windows 32-bit operating system limitation, when more than 4 GB of physical memory is installed, the actual memory size displayed will be less than 4 GB. - Dual channel memory architecture
- Support for DDR3 2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules
- Support for non-ECC memory modules
- Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules
(Please refer "Memory Support List" for more information.) So should I just stick to my 1333 @ 16 gigs? or is it worth it to go 8 gigs of 2133?

I am having a bit of a time finding ram to support this board. I was toying with the idea of a new motherboard and came across this... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130801&cm_re=1150_motherboard-_-13-130-801-_-Product I almost wet my pants just because of the black and white theme alone. If I returned the ram and got this board with faster ram would my 2500K work with it? I know it's not a super awesome cpu but for now? At least I would have the ability to go sli in the future if I wanted too. The specs say I-3, I-5 and i-7 but there are different generations and stuff so I am a little confused. Is the 1150 still a pretty mainstream socket for awhile?

Yeah, the support for the 2400MHz RAM came in through a BIOS update. Z97 is a 1150 socket, which supports i 4000/5000 series processors. Z68 supports 1155 which is i 2000/3000 series processors.

Crap. I overlooked that. Thought mine was 1150 for some reason. Well, I guess I will hunt down some compatible 2400Mhz ram and see what the price looks like, just hard because the pdf from the website has so little ram listed on it. Thanks.

There's no way you'll need 16GB of RAM for what you do, pretty much guaranteed, and prolly not even all of 8GB..Grab AIDA64 (free trial version, or pay) and set it up to log memory usage and whatever else you want..Then play some games and do whatever else you do..You can leave it logging as long as you want, then later on check the log..Don't get 2400MHz stuff because as far as I know the Sandy Bridge memory dividers only go up to 2133MHz as long as your board supports it...Grab some 2133MHz stuff if you need it.
