I seem to see a great deal of the underscore in file names in design school - I thought the underscore was used before computers allowed you to just type normal file names (with a space between words). Is the underscore a MAC user thing?

It is still in use even today but at least today it is not used because of necessity but from choice. All known server systems can handle unusual file names. Some systems may have restrictions in place for foreign characters in folder/file names.

So there is no solution of this problem.

It is not really a problem. People can choose to use them or not.

Actually, it's more of a DOS thing, originally. Nowadays it's fairly common practice among web developers to use either underscores or hyphens in place of spaces but i suggest to use this http://longpathtool.com/ software in type case.

Re:Why do people still use an underscore in file names - isn't that antiquated? 2013/09/01 09:25:27 (permalink)
I think it is simply incorrect to use spaces.  Especially when you are dealing with a command line where a space traditionally signifies individual parts of a command.  A space in a file name becomes confusing in a command and you need to start using a delimiter (such as "") to mark the beginning and end of each file name in the command line which gets tedious and annoying.

You can use spaces if you want, but you just shouldn't.  Tricks were developed to allow you to use spaces in file names but that doesn't mean that you should use spaces.  It is especially incorrect to use spaces when you are dealing with web applications.

Simply put, if you use spaces in file names, the chances of an error occurring at some time as a result is increased.  You should get in the habit of not using spaces in file names.  For instance, if you are a graphic designer and your work goes on with spaces in the file name to someone who organizes your work to be used in a program or on the web, they will become increasingly annoyed with you.

Because _ is better then seeing %20 like in Test%20Me%20OK Test_Me_OK is easer to read.
This is also web based files and you have limits of 260 and an _ counts as one and a space counts as 3 %20.
Also (sometimes) when you put a links in an email body with space in the file name it fails and that is why you put them between " ". I would say it is more a Web or URL issue than a DOS issue.
My 2 Cents, Bill

Yep, spaces in URLs are re-parsed to "%20" which is ugly.

Also (sometimes) when you put a link in an email body with space in the file name it fails...

Good example!

That is because the code running the web application is trying to automatically parse URLs and it thinks the space is the end of the URL and the remainder is part of the next word in the sentence.

Example:
http://stackoverflow.com/...s/15475645/20-is-added instead-of-spaces

Aside from the above, I still use the underscore to this day - even when saving documents locally.  Force of habit.

I must be the exception, because I use both spaces and underscores, depending on circumstances.

The practical/obsessive-compulsive side of me saves all my documents using spaces. They're cleaner to read than underscores, and they look far more professional.

The programmer side of me still uses underscores in files that will be accessible via the web or that need to be parsed in a program.

And to complicate matters worse, I use camel case to name all my programming files. So in actuality I use 3 standards interchangeably.

Both have their uses, I just choose one for clarity and one for ease of use.

I used the underscore between my words because in reality it makes the file name more as they say (Legal)
It helps ensure when working across platforms particularity online there is no issues with the spaces.
Also when working in a DOS or Command level on some systems like Linux when the filenames have spaces it very difficult working with the names.  Let's put it this way Microsoft Windows is very forgiving However if you have issues with your disk a file that is names without the spaces is a bit more easier to recover that one that has spaces.

Working for a major online university files cannot be uploaded with special characters like an apostrophe.

For me it just keeps it simple.  I LOVE simple.

Re: Why do people still use an underscore in file names - isn't that antiquated? 2021/06/24 09:56:44 (permalink)
Had to look this up, as I am currently dealing with this. Someone in our department is utilizing this process as a naming convention, and is driving me crazy. Internal use is OK...but when the file goes out to global entities, change the concept! Servers can see into the naming conventions, file details, and description of the file. So when transferring information into a larger database, and the file name is the longest portion, you are doing something wrong.
Example:
Review_(Location)_Type_(# released)_(#year)_(Long_Descriptive_Text_With_all_underscores_to_emphasise_the_point)
Just counted one: 72 character file name. All of that can be solved with a description.

So I am suggesting redoing the convention so it makes more sense. Shorter directory structures, logical formats. Has anyone has success in this process?

As a programmer, it's needed sometimes :).

For example in Python you use __init__.py or in Helm you use _helpers.tpl to indicate a file that is not a Kubernetes spec, plus many many more examples...

This is mostly used by a developer/programmer.
for example, in javascript this and _this for assigning this value to a variable _this. it is useful sometimes :)
