I thought that you could use either key when using those drives. At the moment I don't think there is anyone on this forum that can give you a definitive answer as I think you have gotten the furthest on the topic

Well my friend, in that case i will persevere and tell you all of my findings when the hardware arrives in a few days. The EVGA VROC FAQ stated that intel 760p's were the only M.2 drives tested on the EVGA Dark mobo that worked. So i've ordered the VROCISSMOD key and will proceed with the experiment.

bcavnaugh What did you have to pay?
I bought 2 Intel 760p 2TB M.2 NVME drives from ebuyer.com and paid £378.99 for each of them. Then £122.99 for the VROCISSDMOD from Lambda-tek.com. So £880.97 altogether for that setup. I managed to successfully create a bootable RAID 0 OS drive using VROC with the above parts, with the latest 1.14 BIOS for the X299 Dark. I had the M.2 drives mounted socket PM1 and PM2 on the motherboard - no special add-in card needed. Here's how i got it to work:- Step 1) mount each of the Intel 760p M.2 drives to the M.2 sockets on the motherboard (Socket PM1 and PM2). Step 2) install the VROCISSDMOD key to the socket on the motherboard. Step 3) install the other components (GPU/CPU/RAM etc etc). Step 4) Go back to the Advanced tab then select CPU Storage Configuration. Set both VMD 2 controllers to 'PCIE SSD CARD' and Disable all the rest. Like so: Step 5) Go into the BIOS and click on the Advanced tab then go into SATA Configuration and set SATA to RAID mode and Enable NVME RAID in the box below it. Then restart and go back into the BIOS. Step 6) Go back to the Advanced tab and select Onboard Device Configuration. At the bottom you have M.2 PM2 and M.2 PM1 dropdown boxes. Now then, here's where things get a bit tricky. In the EVGA VROC FAQ it says you should set your PM1 and PM2 M.2 sockets like this: But... if you do that, for some reason the M.2 drive in socket PM2 will NOT show up in the VROC menu at all. The way i managed to get the M.2 drive in socket PM2 to show up in the VROC menu was by setting the Onboard Device Configurations like this instead: As you can see, M.2 PM2 socket needs to be set to 'PE6 x4' for some insanely weird reason. I think EVGA might have mixed those two settings up and they should work the opposite way around. But whatever, set them PM2 to 'PE6 x4' and you'll be able to configure a RAID array in the VROC menu. Save and exit then go back into the BIOS. Step 7) Go into the Advanced tab and at the bottom you'll see the VROC menu option. Both the 760p drives should now show up and you should be able to select them both with X mark and create a RAID 0 or RAID 1 array. Note: if the VROCISSDMOD key is installed, you'll see RAID 0 and RAID 1 options are available. If you don't install the VROCISSDMOD, only RAID 0 will be available as an option. As for RAID 5 and RAID 10, neither of those showed up as options for me (even with the VROCISSDMOD key installed). I think for RAID 5 and RAID 10 options you'll need the Premium Intel VROC key. Step 8) install Windows 10 off a USB stick. Step 9) before your RAID array shows up as a bootable OS drive, you'll have to F6 install the Intel RSTe VROC driver. Here is a link for that driver (put it on a USB stick - you'll need to inject it just prior to installing Windows 10): https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28426/Intel-Virtual-RAID-on-CPU-Intel-VROC-and-Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-enterprise-Intel-RSTe-Driver-for-Windows-Note: Even though i was using Windows 10 64-bit, in that VROC driver folder you'll only see versions for Windows 7 and Windows 8. It's the Windows 8 driver that works for Windows 10. Step 10) your RAID array should now show up on the drive list and you can install Windows 10. Follow the prompts and it should be smooth sailing from here on out.

I had a similar experience with a pair of Intel 905P. I have two 480GB 2.5" units with both U.2 and M.2 connectors for each. I purchased the VROC key VROCISSMOD (which is the only key that works with the X299 chipset according to Intel documentation). I tried every combination of U.2 and M.2 installation on the motherboard and also tried combinations of these with an Asus Hyper X4 (not the X16) that you could imagine with the VROC key installed. With never more than one drive being recognized I became frustrated and I removed the key and tried a few different combinations again. It wasn't until I changed the M.2_PM2 setting to PE6 X4 that I got both drives recognized in VROC. So I have one drive in M.2_PM2 and the other drive connected to U.2_PU1. I was so excited that I did not put the VROC key back in and I did not look for different combinations again. I just ran it as is. I am running a bootable RAID 0 and it is working fine. I did not go back in BIOS to see if I set SATA for RAID. I will do so tomorrow and check back in. IRSTe tells me I have a VROC Raid in pass-thru mode. Is "VROC in pass-thru mode" correct? BTW - I am running an I7-9800X at 4.9 Ghz on all 8 cores with hyperthreading disabled using automatic tuning in the BIOS. Pretty amazing board and I guess I got lucky with the chip. Robert

Just to follow up on what I posted earlier, I did not set the SATA Configuration to RAID. It is set at AHCI. I am not sure what effect that setting has on VROC but currently VROC appears to be running fine in RAID 0. When I have some spare time I am planning on mapping out just what is possible between the M.2 and U.2 ports and VROC. I thought I had tried every possible combination before stumbling on the M.2_PM2 setting of PE6 X4. As Ravenmaster noted, this setting for M.2_PM2 does not make sense, but it works. Rob_R Ravenmaster - Does IRSTe report back as "VROC in Pass-Thru Mode" on your setup?
It doesn't because i currently have the VROCISSDMOD key installed, which gives the option of RAID 0 and RAID1. However, if i take the key out it reports that VROC is in Pass-Thru Mode and the RAID 1 option disappears. Also, for anyone interested I have some Crystaldisk scores below. This first pic is an old one of my SATA III setup using 2x 2.5" Samsung 850 EVO drives in RAID 0: Next pic is the score i was getting from 1x Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD: And this pic below is the setup i'm now currently using with 2x Intel 760p M.2 NVMe drives in RAID 0 using VROC: So as you can see, the new VROC RAID 0 setup does pretty well. And bare in mind, the Samsung 970 EVO is a slightly faster drive compared to the Intel 760p. A single Samsung 970 EVO 2TB drive gets 3500 Seq Read and 2500 Seq Write, while a single Intel 760p drive gets 3230 Seq Read and 1625 Seq Write. Ideally i would have like to have paired up both Samsung 970 EVO drives in VROC and used those as my main bootable OS drive but unfortunately Intel doesn't allow them to be supported by VROC on the X299 platform (which is why i begrudgingly switched to 2x Intel 760p's). For a short while i had an Asrock X399 Taichi motherboard and a Ryzen Threadripper 2920X CPU. I was able to make a bootable RAID 0 OS drive with both my Samsung 970 EVOs on that platform which gave insanely good results for Seq Read/Writes (Read speed was around 6800 and the write speeds were around 4900). Unfortunately though, either the Asrock mobo or the Threadripper CPU was giving off huge amounts of DPC latency and i was getting microstutter in games with my RTX 2080 Ti and snap/crackle/pop over my speakers coz the latency was also affecting my sound card. So i ended up RMA'ing both the Threadripper and the Asrock mobo, which was a shame. Now i'm using the EVGA X299 Dark along with a Intel i7-9800X CPU and its perfectly stable on all fronts.

I tried with two Samsung 970 EVOs and that did not work. The VROC controller just labelled them as ‘unsupported’ and the option to create raid array was greyed out. So far only the 760p’s have worked. Intel seems to be blocking competitors deliberately.

So using the M.2 PM1 and M.2 PM2 onboard slots, do those run off the CPU lanes or are they on the shared x4 PCH lanes? if they're both CPU that would be cool.. I could free up a x16 slot with the Asus Hyper x16 in it with the 2x Intel 760p in it now.

Did you install also the thermal pads together with the Intel 760p in M.2 PM1 and M.2 PM2 onboard slots? Are there enough space? Because the 2TB are equipped both sided.

You're using 2x 512GB 760p's, i'm using 2x 2TB 760's. They're slightly different models. I'm also using a i7-9800X CPU with 64GB DDR4 RAM. That might explain the variance. On a side note i tested 2 versions of CrystalDisk. One version was the classic install version. The other was the CrystalDisk app installed via the Microsoft App store. They gave different results. The App version of CrystalDisk seemed to give lower scores than the classic install version. Yeah installed thermal pads on both PM1 and PM2. There seemed to be ample space for the pads in each socket.

Udo_G Did you install also the thermal pads together with the Intel 760p in M.2 PM1 and M.2 PM2 onboard slots? Are there enough space? Because the 2TB are equipped both sided.
Yeah installed thermal pads on both PM1 and PM2. There seemed to be ample space for the pads in each socket.
Thanks for your feedback. Did you check the temperatures (no throttling) with the on board solution (m.2 fan from the mainboard)?

VROC is scaling really bad on X299. It's fine in sequential bandwidth but random bandwidth which is usually the most important, is worse than that of a single drive. If you don't need bootable array then set single SSD as OS/bootable drive and set stripped volume in Windows storage manager. This way you will get much better performance. I was passing that multiple times on various motherboards and Intel VROC is simply total fail. Intel support had no clue how to set it right and was only passing info which is on their product pages. For some reason AMD RAID on M.2 works much better in both, sequential and random operations. I was comparing that using ASUS M.2 PCIE x16 card with 4x 250GB Samsung 970 Evo and 4x Intel Optane drives. I can't find my screenshots with results on Samsung SSD/X299 but here are 4x16GB Optane in RAID0 on X299, VROC and Windows stripped volume. 16GB Optane drives are probably the cheapest drives that can be used in VROC RAID and I got 4 of them on black Friday sale so were perfect for my tests. VROC / 4x 16GB Optane Windows volume / 4x Optane and 3x Samsung 970 EVO on X399 It was on early BIOS. Later version was helping in Q8/Q32 bandwidth. Somehow I can't find my other results.

I found the following post in another forum (Asus ROG) - which makes me thoughtful: Greetings,
It is no secret that with the recent microcode updates to protect consumers from the SPECTRE and Meltdown issues, there is generally expected a slow down in CPU processing speeds and SSD performance. Myself I have noticed that my Intel 900p SSDs were losing about 33% in Q1 random 4k read/writes. Prior to all these updates I would get 300Mb/s in Q1 Random 4k read/writes. Once the new microcode was introduced that dropped to anywhere between 180-200MB/s.
Well the other day I did a fresh install of Windows 10 build 1809. Before installing anything I checked out my speed using Crystal Disk Mark and amazingly, my speed was back to the original 300Mb/s mark. I went through my normal installation process and somewhere during installing my motherboard drivers, my speed dropped back to the 200Mb/s mark. Perplexed I was wondering what program or driver might be causing this drop? So I started over and installed WIndows again, then the Intel Chipset, Intel MEI, Motherboard drivers, Intel IRST, ect. What I found was after about the 4th or 5th boot, regardless what order I installed these drivers, the speed of my 900p would drop upon the next reboot.
As I said I changed things up, installing the IRST driver first, audio second, ect. The next time, MEI first, LAN second, ect. Regardless of what I installed at the 4th or 5th boot, the speed would again drop. It seemed to coincide when Intel's Turbo Boost window would pop up for the first time. Anyone that has installed Windows 10, knows that the Intel Turbo Boost doesn't load up immediately but takes a few boots to pop up at start up. So I thought that this might be the culprit.
I went into my BIOS and disabled the Turbo Boost and reinstalled Windows. This time all i did was reboot 5 times, installing nothing but CrystalDiskMark. Upon the 6th boot, the speed dropped again. I then repeated this installation except this time I changed the group policy of installing Windows updating, basically turning Windows updates OFF or not to install without my permission. Same thing after the 5th reboot, my speed would drop.
I would really like to have my original speed of my Intel 900p back. A 33% drop is quite noticeable. The fact that I'm seeing the original speed after a fresh install made me quite happy and now I'm quite perplexed.
So my question is simple. Why is this happening? What happens in those first 5 boots that changes Windows so my Intel 900p loses 33% of its speed? Is the microcode meant to fix SPECTRE/Meltdown not enabled in those first 5 boots? Do I have to install an INTEL driver for my 900p for Windows 10?
I am asking because a friend with a 905p has been able to do a fresh install and is retaining his speeds. He and I have the same motherboard, GPU, RAM.
**NOTE** I have downloaded the most up-to-date drivers for Intel Chipset, MEI, LAN, IRST, Audio, Bluetooth, Wifi, (all motherboard drivers)

badboy64 I got 2 512GB 760p running now in Raid-O on my eVga x299 Dark but I can't seem to see the samething in the bios as you do and my results with Crystal Diskmark are around 5000 Read and 3088 Write and the results aren't consistent at all as they varies from 3800 Read but the writes stay the same.

The 512GB and the 1Tb both have the same read and write speed regardless of size and I am only lacking 32Gb of system memory versus yours and my 7960x runs at 4.7ghz full time. It doesn't matter what version I install. I still get the same result on them all. So what does your device manager say you have as a storage controller driver? Mine are version 5.5 1334. I assume you have the same.

Yup i'm using the same version 5.5.0.1334. I'm not even overclocking my CPU at all. Before you run CrystalDisk, try closing down all other background programs like Steam, chats, anti-virus scans and make sure you don't have any downloads running and see if that makes any difference. Woomack VROC is scaling really bad on X299. It's fine in sequential bandwidth but random bandwidth which is usually the most important, is worse than that of a single drive. Yeah Optane drives aren't really the same as proper M.2 SSD's. They're made to accelerate other drives rather than be a main boot drive or storage drive. The 16GB Intel Optane drives only have a read/write speed of 900/145 so those results you have make perfect sense (when pairing 4 of them). It also makes sense that your X299 VROC RAID 0 has lower results for the Q1T1 scores than Windows RAID 0 got. VROC is done via hardware, Windows is RAID is done through software. And the reason why that is significant is because after the microcode was updated to combat Spectre/Meltdown, it had a negative impact on Q1T1 VROC scores. Prior to the update, they were higher. This does provide us with an interesting speculation though. Such as: "how well will these same drives perform in VROC RAID 0 when paired with newer Intel CPU's such as Ice Lake, that include Spectre/Meltdown fixes on a hardware level?" Only time will tell. As for the Samsung 970's - those don't work in bootable RAID 0 on X299. Intel are actively blocking those drives at the BIOS level and they show up as 'not supported' in the VROC menu. This is a very obvious, deliberate attempt to get people to buy Intel drives which sucks because Samsung 970's have superior read/write speeds to Intel's 760p drives. At one point, late last year i had an Asrock X399 Taichi motherboard and a Threadripper 2920X. The Samsung 970 drives did indeed pair up in RAID 0 over CPU perfectly and gave read/write speeds of approximately 6800/4900 (as far as i can remember - wish i'd saved a screenshot). I was only using 2x Samsung 970's drives btw. But i ended up RMA'ing the Threadripper CPU and the Asrock X399 mobo because they were giving off massive DPC latency which was causing my RTX 2080Ti to microstutter in games and my ZxR sound card to snap/crackle/pop over my speakers. All i did was swap out the Threadripper for a i7-9800X and the Asrock Taichi for a EVGA Dark mobo and the DPC latency was no more. No microstutters, no snap/crackle/pop. Seems AMD are having problems of their own in that regard.
