I got a 700mb avi/xvid file I need to convert.

What would work the best in a dvd player 7 years old.

mpg, wmv or vcd/svcd?

    A toshiba dvb211c

checked out the manual here. doesn't say anything about supported types, because i don't think it was a big thing at that time.

    i could try all 3, it's just that it's my buddy's cd-r's and i don't wanna use them all!

DVDs use MPEG (MPEG-2). Inside a DVD you'll normally find .VOB files.

Most DVD players play DivX. There are others that play formats like Xvid, mp4, and stuff.

Edit: Convert the file to dvd format =P.

i screw it, i give up, i converted to mpg. than burned it on a cd-rw as a data cd. only other option was audio cd or dvd video.

MPEG-2 is the video format that all store-bought DVDs use.  It is the format that all DVD players must play.  Also, the audio format is called A/52.

In order to maintain compatibility between all DVD playes as well you just create the proper file structure on the disk so the DVD player can find the main movie title.  This is done with a .IFO file.  An IFO file is one of three types of files that are used on DVDs. It contains important navigational information, such as where a video chapter begins, and where audio and subtitle streams exist within the movie (VOB) file.  VOB is simply the container format where the MPEG-2 video and A/52 audio streams are contained.

Finally, the output file size on your MPEG-2 files is completely dependent on the bit-rate that you use when you encode them.  The higher the bit-rate the larger the file size and the better the quality.  This setting is completely your choice.  It depends on how you want the video to look as well as how much you want to fit on one DVD.
