So I noticed for the most part the boost clock is a little higher for a price of an additional $69.00 for the XC3 in this. Is that basically all the difference and perhaps looks for the extra $ ?, Is it not possible to get that extra boost via overclocking anyway? And I wonder if there are any benchmarks from the different evga version if not from 3080s then 2080s or 2070s when they came out, that anyone can link?

Boost clocks are rarely the actual clocks of the GPU anymore. The base and boost clocks you see advertised are the minimums the card should run at, but GPU Boost (NVidia driver technology) will also overclock every GPU that GPU boost determines can be overclocked further. Sometimes that is substantial, sometimes it is minimal.
The base and boost clocks advertised by all of the manufacturers, to include NVidia’s own cards, are probably not going to be what the cards actually do at stock, the cards will probably run somewhere around 1850mhz or higher on their own, so your card is already overclocked from the factory, on top of what the manufacturers are also displaying.
A card with a factory 1710mhz boost can still match the clocks of another factory card with a 1755mhz with GPU Boost alone, without any end user overclocking at all. Sadly, there is no way to turn GPU boost off, so in the end, you are paying more to guarantee higher clocks if the card runs into a constraint like power or thermals.
The cost difference is guarantees that the card will run around that higher boost clock, as long as all of the environmental aspects are kept under control.
The founders Edition, XC3, and FTW3 all use completely different PCB’s, so that will be another, non overclocking, limiting factor.

so from what I understand, basically with the extra cost, consumer is guaranteeing the outcome that a overclock can achieve without the actual overclock, assuming the correct conditions like you mentioned such as power and cooling etc, did I understand that right? Having said that Im confused about PCB's and if they will be worth the extra cost or achieve any substantial performance boost..

My 1080 FTW with zero overclock boosts to 2025mhz for example. Historically the founders edition have been great cards. I personally always get the FTW models as they have always stayed a bit cooler meaning turbo boost will maintain higher clocks

When I had a Nvidia 1070 Founders Edition years ago it boosted to 2101 MHz by raising the power limit. Of course that's a sample size of one.

While this answer will not be straight forward yet, we need end user reviews and to be able to see power limits from manufacturers, I will try my best. For the PCB’s, the XC3 only has two 8 pin power cables, where as the FTW3 will have three 8 pin cables. The power make not make much of a difference for base performance, but when you get closer to the maximum power, the FTW3 SHOULD have more head room because there is more power. If nothing else, the FTW3 should be more stable at higher power usage, since it will have more brute force to feed the GPU. Until we have reviews, we will not know for sure, and this should apply to all manufacturers in general, I just use EVGA naming and cards because we are on the EVGA forum. As for the NVidia founders cards, they are in a league of their own, and we can clearly see that power will be the limiting factor for them, but good lord, aesthetically those cards are amazing. One thing to be aware of is the size difference. The XC3 is much thinner and not nearly as wide. This will make the XC3 more compatible with most cases. The size of the FTW3 will require measuring and verifying that it will even fit in many cases.

They have higher binned chips that have a higher overclock potential. Their base and boost clocks are also set higher in the BIOS. If you look at the clock differences, it's typically 50Mhz between variations. With the Turing cards, they all ran into power limits which some of the pricier cards raised but it was easy to hit high clocks, even with a lower tier card. There were some exceptions but in general the differences came down to the coolers.

If you plan to add a waterblock and overclock does it matter FTW vs XC3?

The FTW3 well have a higher power limit. Useful for over clocking. Probably pretty pointless for normal use though.

FTW3 is basically made for Overclocking. Given it's higher power allowance you'd want a FTW3.

Do the pcb differences make any sort of substantial difference? I'm in the queue for both the 3070ti FTW and the XC3 GAMING but can only afford one. Leaning heavily to the xc3 since it's $200 cheaper which would give me some wiggle room to maybe buy a better mobo/cpu than if I went ftw.
