I've got 4x2GB Mushkin DDR3 1600 RAM using Windows 7 64-bit. Will 4x4GB work on this MB?

The highlighted portion above is a little misleading.  Only the black slots will support 2000Mhz memory.  The grey slots are maxed at 1600 Mhz.

Wow...It appears that my plain, simple answer to a plain, simple question was just too plain and simple for some folks to handle.

Now, I have a question...Where does the OP state that he has an EVGA 790i Ultra MB?? Maybe he has a different one.

Well, I am sure that most folks would assume since he is asking about the Ultra, he either owns that particular board, or is considering getting that board.  Perhaps you are the exception to the rule.....

Most folks know what making assumptions usually leads to.

The point I am trying to make is this: (1) The OP asked a very simple, plain question. (2) I gave him a very simple, plain and correct answer. (3) Why was this not good enough? (4) Why did others feel the need to come along and post a bunch of assumed and unrequested info? (5) Can it not be assumed that if the OP wanted or needed additional info....that he had the capability to ask for it?

Re:What's Maximum RAM for 790i Ultra MB 2010/02/25 10:37:25 (permalink)
I offer you this....you informed the OP that the board is capable of supporting 8GB of RAM....the question is answered.  The OP buys the board, and also purchases 8GB of 2000Mhz RAM.....problem....the board is not going to run those 4 sticks at 2000Mhz, nor does it state that in the Ultra manual.  So by other member's chiming in, the OP goes away knowing more information that what he may have initially wanted to know, but now he does, and it may help him.  He knows the following:
    1.  The board supports 8GB of RAM.
    2.  The board will not support 8GB of RAM at 2000Mhz (even though it is advertised as such all over the box).
    3.  Number 2 is no where to be found in the user's manual.
    4.  The black slots are the only slots that will support 2000Mhz RAM.
    5.  The grey slots are maxed at 1600Mhz.
    6.  Number 5 is no where to be found in the manual.
Now, even if the OP does not own the board, the above mentioned facts could possibly assist him in making the decision to purchase or not purchase the board.
I have seen many complaint/rant threads on the fact that the 790i series boards are advertised as running 8GB of RAM at 2000Mhz (so folks thought when they purchased it), and then realizing that it is not going to happen, after the fact.
The point I am trying to make is that it is better to have too much information, then not enough.

Re:What's Maximum RAM for 790i Ultra MB 2010/02/25 12:48:08 (permalink)
I offer you this in return: The OP stated; "I've got 4x2GB Mushkin DDR3 1600 RAM using Windows 7 64-bit." Then he asked; "Will 4x4GB work on this MB?" He already has RAM (and the max amount of it) that will work on the board that he may or may not already own. It also may or may not be an EVGA branded board. Obviously, his only concern was whether or not he could double what he already has...and my answer to him told him no.

The point I am trying to make is this: Answer a simple question with a simple and accurate answer. If this leads to more questions then, answer those questions if and when they are posted. Providing more information based upon assumptions is a complete waste of time.

^^^^LOL...RTFM.  The sad part is that it is not written in the 790i Ultra manual...I have looked multiple times and never found where it mentions that the grey slots are maxed at a lesser frequency than the black slots.  I learned that after trying to run 2000Mhz in the grey slots and finally calling Tech Support and was told "ain't gonna happen" (and I quote) back when I first bought the board.

I know that's not in the manual bag, I didn't say it was or I woulda put it up there..What is in the manual is the memory supported, as I quoted from the manual..And read some reviews, that board's been tested many times with 2000MHz stuff..You probably have a bad mobo if you can't run it, because it should, it can and it will.

Perhaps you misread what I said.  What I said was you cannot run 2000Mhz RAM at 2000Mhz in the grey slots, only the black slots.

This thread looks fun.  My own experience I am able to run 1800mhz ram (2x2GB) in either color slots, however I've also heard the grey ones are also cap'd at 1600 from many sources.  Perhaps I got a lucky board?  But I think evga may need to clear things up.

This thread is not fun and should not have continued past the 2nd post! Post#1-Question asked. Post#2-Question answered correctly. That should have been the end of it....move along to the next question.

Unfortunately, some people just cannot seem to accept the simplicity of that. The forums are here to help folks to resolve their issues. They are not here for people to use as their personal playgrounds to showoff their knowledge.

notice the bold parts. Now a question for you, why would some one have DD3 and be asking how much can i put in this mother board if in fact he did not own said board already. so fine don't assume then, but did you ever stop to think for just one tiny second that maybe he does own a 790i ultra since that is what he is asking about?

Wow...It appears that my plain, simple answer to a plain, simple question was just too plain and simple for some folks to handle.

Now, I have a question...Where does the OP state that he has an EVGA 790i Ultra MB?? Maybe he has a different one.

look at the title of the thread

    jeffreyham

UUUUUHHH, OK...it says; "What's Maximum RAM for 790i Ultra MB"...so, what is your point????

notice the bold parts. Now a question for you, why would some one have DD3 and be asking how much can i put in this mother board if in fact he did not own said board already. so fine don't assume then, but did you ever stop to think for just one tiny second that maybe he does own a 790i ultra since that is what he is asking about?

I see that you misunderstood my meaning and that is my fault. When I said; "Maybe he has a different one"...I was refering to the manufacturer brand. EVGA is not the only company to have it's brand on the 790i Ultra MB. This was in response to Post #3 assuming...and posting this:

EVGA nForce 790i Ultra SLI Motherboard System Memory support:
Supports dual channel JEDEC DDR3-1333 and SLI-Ready memory up
to 2000 MHz. Supports up to 8 GBs DDR3 memories.
    Your Motherboard Manual <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Now, does this help you to understand where I was coming from?? Since the OP failed to list any system spex, it was senseless to post a bunch of possible irrelevent information. I had already correctly answered the OP's question (post #2) and there was no need for anyone else to get involved. Is there not even one person that can agree with me on this?? It's just good, plain common sense...simple question...simple answer...a done deal!!

While simple answers are nice, they are often frequently incomplete. Secondly, the simple answer is IMO the OP was asking about a 790i Ultra board. There isn't an alternative simple answer. The memory constraints are the same as that is a function of the chip set. Check out the ASUS 790i Ultra. Their configuration lists using only TWO sticks of 2000 Mhz as being an acceptable configuration.  Lastly I'm no quite sure why you're getting all worked up over people posting extra info. Relax take your shoes off, have a Corona with lime

Yeah; HeavyHemi, I hear what you're sayin'. I have great respect for the knowledge that the UEM's here on the forums have. You have helped me tremendously the short time that I have been participating. I have been a "reading" member for over 3 years but, did not post until recently when I wanted knowledgable advice and had issues I could not work out.

There are alot of folks on here ready and willing to help but, there are also alot of arrogant ones who could care less about using their knowledge to help someone out and their only mission is to run up their post count to up their status. They float around from thread to thread not thoroughly reading people's questions and then they spew out a bunch of information that may be helpful to someone else on a different thread but, is irrelevent to the thread they are on. Based on my own experiences, this is very confusing and aggravating to someone who is just looking for a simple answer to a simple question. Therein lies the reason why I got "worked up".

Now, I am NOT saying that the other members above are of those kind of people...OK? However, I will use it as an example of what I am trying to get across.

I had just signed into the forum 5 minutes after the OP posted his question. I read it and said to myself; "Hey, I have a 790i Ultra MB and I know the answer to that question"...tap tap tap, done. The OP was still showing online so, I waited to see if he was going to ask for any further information that I may be able to help him with. He did not so, I moved along. There was absolutely no need for me to sit there and start telling him everything I know about the 790i Ultra MB. Especially, without knowing his system spex and no other questions. I got back on several hours later and noticed activity on that thread so, I went to see if the OP needed further help or if maybe he left me a TY note. When I started reading what was there...I felt insulted...like my New Member simple answer to a simple question just wasn't good enough for these Uber Elite Member guys...even though it was accurate.

I then started asking myself the following questions...Why would the OP want EVGA MB Info. thrown at him if he had an XFX MB (like I do) or an ASUS or a MSI or a ZOTAC etc.?? How can someone make the statement " YOUR MOTHERBOARD MANUAL" when they didn't know JACK about what brand of board he has or may be intending to buy?? Then, it blossoms on to 2000MHz RAM (blah, blah, blah) when the ONLY thing the poor OP wanted to know is, if a 790i Ultra MB could take 16GB of RAM...he stated he already has 8GB of 1600MHz. How was all that (blah, blah, blah) supposed to help him??

Completely ridiculous...but, they did increase their post #'s......and because I got PO'd at them....got my #'s up too!!!

    THANKX, FELLA'S!!!!,,l,,!!!!
