Just wondering what you power users out there, would say is a good free and safe defrag tool for someone with Windows Vista 64. I'll tell you why i am looking. The past two machines i have owned whether it was vista 32 bit or 64 bit, had really long defrag times. Like 18 hours for each machine, so I am apt to think MS should have done an update for this but no joy. I dunno my current machine has a 500g hardrive and its model number is ST3500418AS which i think is seagate. Yes its a seagate barracuda 7200. Now the available space left is about 240gigs. After trying to defrag the other day, it sat there for about 22 hours and it still wasn't finished so I cancelled, then when it rescanned the drive it said file performance good no defrag necessary. I guess its getting hung up. The only thing I can think of is prior to the other day, I had about 8 to 13 gigs in acid loops stored in their respective folders and subfolders, so i just deleted anything and everything I dont use on a regular basis. This includes all acid software and loops. Let me know what you think guys......

Piriform and auslogic both make free, highly suggested defragging programs. There are others too. It really is about finding one you like. Personally I like defraggler, hasnt caused any errors yet and is quick.

Auslogic's Disk Defrag is the one I use and the one I install on all the machines I work on (friends and family). Defraggler I have heard is excellent as well.

YEP! Auslogic's Defragmenter works like a charm and only took about an hour if that. Thanks a lot people. You know they have another utility called Boost Speed and i tried that and it says it found 1066 registry errors and I am wondering if you all know about that utility being worth the $49 price tag?

Not sure why you had a problem with the built-in defragger. It's actually quite good. Sure it doesnt have a bunch of front-end options, but it doesn't need them. It still does what all the other ones do. If you have ever heard of Diskeeper, the built in defragger software is just a lite version of that tool that used the same underlying engine and defragging algorithms.

I hate to hijack the thread, but does auslogics or defraggler have a consolidate free space option? (can't post new threads on this computer at work for some reason, grrr).

i've tried both: piriform defraggler and auslogics disk defrag. both worked really good on me. you can try auslogics first and then a few weeks/month later piriform defragger. those programs are free and do a really good job on defraggin you hard drive. you can also try ccleaner which will clean some files left behind by uninstalled programs.

I know this is an older post, but I had to. There is nothing wrong with the built in defrag tool that comes with Vista. What is wrong, is the hard-drive you are using. Seagate is better used for a paper weight. Seagate is a hit or miss company. Good or bad, or do to fail soon!!! Also, stay away from programs that claim to boost the speed of a computer. MS Windows has everything you need to keep your computer running as it should, even free Security Software... Tip. Pickup a book on Vista, or get W7 and pickup a book on it... You will be surprised what MS Windows can do with a few free add-ons from MS Windows...
