EMTEK's new GeForce RTX 3090 Blower Edition revealed | TweakTown EMTEK has just revealed a very interesting graphics card, with the South Korean AIB unveiling its new GeForce RTX 3090 Blower Edition graphics card. The card has an old-school blower-style cooler with all that grunt underneath the GeForce RTX 3090 still there with its huge 24GB GDDR6X framebuffer. The card has a semi-custom design, with EMTEK using the NVIDIA reference RTX 3090 board with dual 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Where EMTEK has done things differently with its GeForce RTX 3090 Blower Edition graphics card is that it used a daughterboard to have the dual 8-pin PCIe power connectors. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition uses the single 12-pin PCIe power connector, but EMTEK went with the daughterboard at the end of the card. The daughterboard is a separate PCB that is there solely for the two PCIe power connectors, which is a lot of work for EMTEK to do for a single SKU of the GeForce RTX 3090. Interesting design though, I can see plenty of these being used in crypto mines. I like the design of the PCIe connectors on the end.

I see three screw holes on the end so it looks sturdy enough.

It uses a circuit board soldered to a circuit board. It's clear that they took an existing design and made it longer in order to fit a blower fan in the dead space and still have enough heatsink to make an inefficient blower design still acceptable (to what degree; someone will see). Unconventional.

Thought everyone decided the blower style isn't better?

It really depends on the case (enclosure). In open air, a blower card is worse every time. In the absolute worst computer case, a blower card can be better. It really depends. But in that instance, you would be comparing awful to awful, so I don't really see the point. Don't use terrible cases, and then you won't need to use terrible cards. What NVIDIA did with the 30xx series FE cards, on the other hand, was pretty smart. NVIDIA's 30xx series FE blower design is smart because it is a hybrid design (half blower, half axial) and the length of the blower section's heatsink air path is reduced to the point that it isn't too bad. It still has half the card being axially-cooled, and any inefficiency in the blower section is at least venting out of the case. The problem with blower cards is the length of the heatsink air path. They become massively inefficient because once air is heated up in the first part of that air path, the air is unable to absorb much heat in the last portion of the air path. A big portion of the heatsink becomes ineffective unless the blower is operating at absolutely annoyingly loud fan speeds.

Blower coolers are great, if not essential, for many SFF (small form factor) mini-ITX cases, however the 3090 can run quite hot, so unless that fan is super powerful (which also means super loud) I imagine this card is going to be thermal throttled to hell. Also the extended length is going to make the card a no-go for most mini-ITX cases, thereby defeating the purpose. I would like to see a blower fan on a 3070 (or 3070 Super which I presume is coming at some stage), I think the blower type shroud would be sufficient to keep that card cool enough to perform decently under normal use. I would definitely buy one for my wife's mini-ITX build if EVGA puts one out.
