Hey everyone, thanks in advance for reading this. So I recently upgraded from 6GB to 12 GB of OCZ Gold 10666 2-2-2-9 @1.65v and stumbled upon a problem. For a while I had been suspecting that my RAM was not being recognized and after upgrading my suspicions were true. I was only getting 9GB usable out of 12GB installed. I tried the remedy from the sticky to set the MCH Strap to the DRAM ratio and I was able to get all 6GB recognized and usable (installed in DIMM's 1,3,5). However, after installing the other 6GB it was back to only 9GB usable. I'm currently checking the DIMM's one by one and having some difficulty getting a successful boot (error codes E8 01 62 00 on the post lights) so there may be some bad DIMMs. What I'm asking for now is for you guys/gals to check this picture of my socket and tell me if you can see any bent pins. I'm a little concerned that half of them are bent, but that may just be the design (i couldn't find a high res picture online). Also, i used Imgur because I did'nt know forum rules on picture size, sorry.

thanks in advance, if you all can help me out I'll volunteer an extra couple hours this month!

Half bend one way half the opposite thats by design.  As for adding RAM did you increase the VTT and change the command rate to 2t?  try +250 VTT and Command rate of 2T might clear up the problem.
Also those timings seem extremely off.  try 8-8-8-24-74-2T.  if you get all 12gb usuable with these changes slowly lower the timings until RAM dissappears again then go back up to just before it vanished.  This will be your stable timings.

Alright I'll give that a try, I have to run out and grab some thermal paste, I seem to be all out. I thought those timings were off too but thats what the sticker says on the RAM itself, however, in the BIOS I do remember it being 8-8-8-24 (I think, going from memory). By lower the timings I'm assuming you mean increase the number e.g. 8-9 is going lower whereas 9-8 is higher? Sorry, the last build I had and overclocked was a Pentium 4 about 6 years ago. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try those as soon as I re-goop and reinstall the components.

    Hello,

I can't see the image you have of the socket, but if you want you can email it to me and I can let you know if I see anything that is a concern.

hopefully the image posts this time.....i just reinstalled everything and am going to try these suggesstions. Just question about the VTT...is that the CPU VTT setting? I haven't found a memory one similar to that. Also, I was using the 'Dummy OC' setting if that helps in troubleshooting

Update, I set the CPU VTT to +300mv (the number turned green, +250 wasn't and didn't work when I tried it) I also set the DIMM Voltage to 1.650v (again it turned green). These settings seemed to help a little and raised the usuable RAM to 9.93GB.....trying the suggested timings now.

ps, sorry about the pics, i can't load them until the spam rules lapse for me.....damn newbie lol

    Hello,

The CPU socket looks fine, just make sure if you have to send it in to EVGA you put the socket protector on to protect the pins. pack it really well too.

Alright, another update....it seems my problems lie deeper than just not attaining usable memory. I was testing out Modules and DIMM slots and found that I have 1 stick that wont boot in any slot, and that my 2,4,6 slots wont boot with a single stick of RAM in them. 2,4,6 also wont boot with the working set that works in 1,3,5. I think I'm going to have to try and RMA the non-functioning sticks and perhaps the motherboard. However, I have one last question for everybody...if the 2,4,6 DIMM slots wont boot with any single stick, or the functioning pair...then why when I populate all 6 DIMM slots do some get recognized???

I have a feeling its going to be a frustrating road, thanks again for all your help!!

Slots 1,3,5, the colored slots, are the primary channel.  Slots 2,4,6, the black slots, are the secondary channel.  Slot 2 will only work if slot 1 is filled.  Same applies to slots 4 with 3, and slots 6 with 5.

If you have 6 sticks, as it seems you do, try 4 known good sticks in slots 2,1,4,3.  Then try slots 2,1,6,5.  Then try slots 4,3,6,5.  If the system boots, reads all your memory and is stable with all 3 configurations, then its likely not the MB or the socket.  It can be the CPU itself or the MB in the case of a failure and swapping one or the other will be your best way to test.

BTW, each of these test will have you running in dual channel instead of triple channel.

From what you posted its a bad stick of RAM.  RMA the kit get a new one.  Your RAM problem should go away socket looks clean no bent pins.  So its the stick of RAM as for the slots black wont work unless red is populated.

AHHHHH! Well then, I learned something today. I have contacted OCZ and I am going to RMA the new kit of RAM I got. The CSR was very helpful and suggested just to RMA it just in case it was the RAM (I'm within 14 days of purchase). The explanation on which DIMM's are active was spot on...I'll try out the combo's you suggested tomorrow, still think I have to RMA a stick though....thanks for the help!!!
