Like others said, going from 60 hz to 120 hz is amazing. However, i went from a CRT to 120 hz, which is less amazing. CRT destroys the best 120 or 144 hz LCDs. its actually sad that they still cant make a LCD perform like a CRT, but since i cannot buy CRTs anymore when they die, i was forced to the next best thing, a 120 hz + LCD.

To bad they don't make a miniature plasma, then we would have the best of everything, 600hz, great color, black levels, and contrast.

Yea I know armyguy, I loved my 19" CRT I had a NEC FE991SB back in the day, gaming at 1600x1200, used it from 2003 to 2009, sadly had to get rid of it cause the tube was starting to go out on it.

It had a Superbright button on it as well which was great for darker games (another thing still not fixed on LCD yet due to backlight bleed) The black levels are so much better on CRT still

I have a like new working, comes in org. box CRT, think it's a NEC 20ish. It's yours - free, but you'll have to pay the shipping

Oh man, oh man!  This XL2420TE is crazy!  It makes the games run their full-potential.  My rig feels like a new PC, it's crazy!  Does anyone have this monitor?  I am curious about the presets, I am using GAMER1.  The manual said something about Auto Calibration which is greyed out on this.  Not sure how to use everything yet.  But I just played some COD: Ghosts (which SLi is broken for right now, thanks Nvidia) and it ran wonderfully.

Nice!  I am having the anti glare removed from the VG248QE I got and am getting this for calibration. http://spyder.datacolor.com/portfolio-view/spyder4pro/
I got it for $20 less from Amazon. Can't wait to get it all and try it out!

Edit: I read there are drivers and icc profiles on the cd for your monitor.

Is it possible that you guys are are experiencing a bit of a placebo effect with the higher Hz monitors?

I read a lot of the reviews on 120+Hz monitors on Newegg, and it seems like everyone says the same thing about the monitors being so much smoother and making gameplay better.

I've never personally seen one in action myself, and obviously you can't really get a sense of it from watching anything about it on the web.  And it's been years since I've owned a crt so I have no real frame of reference.

Mine are supposed to be arriving at my house today, but I'm a bit of a pessimist, so I hope they live up to the hype.

I too want to make the jump, but I am nervous about putting one next to my Dell U2312hm IPS monitor.  The monitor is beautiful and I am afraid that the quality of the 120hz monitor will be lacking when next to it.  Maybe someone can convince me otherwise.

I kinda wanted an IPS too.  But I figure you can just play FPS or other twitch type games on your 120+, and RTS games or games that don't need the extra frames on your IPS.

I will put it this way. Since switching from 60 to 120 Hz monitor my eye strain is non existent. I prefer Samsung monitors.

I too like Samsung a lot, I'm still using their XL2370 from 2010(best gaming monitor of 2010), but Benq seems to be the way to go now.

Yea I think that's the route I will end up going.  If you are looking for an IPS monitor though, I can say the Dell U2312hm is freaking amazing.  I know colors are a big thing for people and their monitors.  Well I just recently made the wedding invitations for my upcoming wedding and was really nervous about the colors on the screen not being accurate.  However, we got them printed and they are PERFECT.  I remember playing around with so many different variations of the colors she wanted and finally decided to just trust the monitor.

Knowing that, I honestly never notice a monitor's colors being garbage until the monitor is next to another monitor to compare against.  In this case, I am worried that one of those 120hz monitors will have worse colors than my Dell and lead me to not appreciate them as much as I normally would have.  Personally, it's a crap feeling to spend 300-400 bucks on something and not be satisfied.  Am I just being over cautious?  Please say yes so I can buy a 120hz monitor lol.

Definitely not. I can tell immediately when my monitor is accidentally in 60hz mode when some games neglect to use the highest refresh.

You feel it mostly in the mouse response. It adds a few ms of latency to your mouse when you go back to 60Hz.

I found this link to a review of the VG248QE. Scroll down, it talks about calibration and then about ICC profiles. They created a profile using a calibrator and offer a link and instruction on using the profile. Some folks at OCN say the profile works well with BF3
http://pcmonitors.info/reviews/asus-vg248qe

So, I'm like many that are used to nice color at the cost of 8ms refresh. The scale has now tilted and now I want speed, which is a sacrifice to color. To make the best of it, I noticed folks are using calibrators and making these profiles. That's why I bought one, to make the transition less painful

Link regarding BF4, the use of surround light boost, and your new monitors. It won't work till later drivers...

Thanks so much.  I will give those first two a gander.  I was playing with my settings all yesterday.

And funny thing, I installed that Strobelight last night to enable lightboost..... and was just enamored with waving my finger in front of the screen to see the strobbing effect!  I'm still doing it intermittently for some reason?!?!?!

Thank you for all the suggested monitors and experiences with 120Hz vs 60Hz.

But what do you think about my system specs?  Would you recommend that I upgrade?  I just dont want to buy a 120Hz monitor and have my hardware struggle to perform.  I'm use to 60fps - no tearing.

I think your going to need 780's instead of the 580's to get max settings in bf3 and to run at 120 fps. Not sure with bf4 because I've only used the 780's with that game. I would try to use your set up but upgrade the monitor and GPU's for now. Then see how it runs and then maybe upgrade if needed.

Been playing around with mine for about a week now. It does seem like games can be played to their smoothest potential. I have been on a few calibration websites and used the windows calibration tool and got mine to an ok point. It took a lot of tweaking and for me its personal preference, If you want you can pm me and I ll give you what I have for settings to try out.

I'll toss in my input. I bought one of the Catleaps off eBay about a year ago and it wasn't one of the golden batches to overclock with. The guys over at Overlord have been selling the components to replace inside some of these IPS monitors which compete directly with Apple and Dell. The install was fairly simple (though a bit pricey, $250~ for the PCB set if I remember right). I can now overclock my 27" 1440p IPS to 119Hz... I can't quite get the timings right for 120, or it just won't hit it... so I run at 110Hz. It makes all the difference and the color reproduction/viewing angel is still amazing. The difference in fluidity is phenomenal.

I bought the 144hz Asus VG248QE when it was on sale last week at Newegg too, just to see what all the buzz was about -- I currently have 3x 30" Dell IPS monitors, so going from a 7680x1600 resolution down to 1920x1080 took some getting used to. The colors look awful compared to the Dells, very washed out and flat looking (but I'll definitely try those calibrations later tonight). But all of it becomes very forgivable when you see how incredibly smooth gameplay gets, especially in fast-paced games. I never knew what people were talking about with motion blur, ghosting, etc because I've been using the Dell for the past 6 years. When I loaded up Battlefield 4 for the first time, I remember spawning in the village on the Golmud Railroad map and I literally gasped at how fluid movement was. I found an enemy player and totally overshot my lead on him because I'd been accustomed to having a certain amount of lead at 60hz. BF4 is a JOY to play at 144hz, my GPUs are only working at 68% at ultra settings and I feel like I actually do better in close quarter maps. I tried some other games -- Kingdoms of Amalur was running at 280fps and again, SUPER smooth, I kept over-adjusting the camera mouselook. I can tell it's not placebo either, because I've been playing XCom Enemy Within, which is capped at 60fps and just scrolling around the map feels awful now. I'm honestly torn -- I've invested so much into these 30" monitors and they look way better, but when it comes down to it, I feel like this fluidity is an essential now. I wish there was a balance between the two! I know Eizo makes a 240hz 24" with a VA panel, but it's over twice the cost of the Asus.

^ I was reading about that monitor as well, but I don't think it will look as good as your Dell's, it had more imput lag, No G-sync either, so I didn't go that route.

Heh that's why I went mental and got 3 120Hz monitors back in the day. Racing in Dirt2 in surround at 120Hz with a nice wheel is an amazing gaming experience :D

I kinda want to upgrade them to newer panels soon if I can find a buyer for these. I got mine when 120Hz was still hard to find and there was only Asus or Acer 120Hz available for more money than I want to admit paying :D

The VG248QE? It has little to no input lag.
