Ok, so I went out tonight, and took some pics with my wife's Canon Powershot SD750.  Here are the results.  I have not done any post editing on these pics.  The pic that are B&W with color selection were done on camera, not with any software.  What do you think?  What do you recommend to get better quality photo's.

Yeah, its weird, that happens on my wife's camera when you turn off the flash.  I don't know why.  They are more grainy then fuzzy.  The camera is a 5 or 6 megapixel, but its one of those point and shoot camera's.

Flash allows you to "stop time" that's why when flash is on, you won't see "blur" as much. When flash is off, you rely on steady hands (get a tripod). :)

Yea grainy is a better word choice, and for the camera you used they are great pictures ;)

It looks to me that it has a lot of noise/grain. You can either play with the ISO level on your camera if it has that setting. What is ISO?

Lower the ISO = less noise, darker picture

Higher the ISO = more noise, brighter picture

P&S are always a waste of money IMHO. Quality pictures = DSLRS.

You can settle for DSLRS at sub-1k or even lower. Dont be fooled by the marketing companies offer (more megapixels [photo buffs should know this] etc.)

But for a point & shoot, the quality of the photo above is good. Even at night, the amount of noise is not too much.

For tips, I have a lot. Most importantly, you can use the Rule of Thirds. <--very very useful tip.

You also should be familiar with your camera's presets if they are any. That would help you out. And always read the manual. :-)

Get the most out of your point & shoot.  <--- clicky

Thanks guys.  There are a lot of settings that I need to learn on the camera.  I didn't have a tri-pod, but I did use a block wall to set the camera on.  Otherwise it was way to blurry.

Nice pictures. maybe a lower shot so there is not so much black from the sky... my 2 cents :P

But for the camera you used its a really good shot.

Think any of them can be touched up to make them look more professional?  The only thing is that I don't have photoshop, and even if I did. I don't know how to use it. I do have the open source program GIMP though. Any help would be appreciated.

    Blizzie

Get a DSLR with some nice lens.

    and a tripod.

tweaked, all the images seem a bit out of focus, especially the b&w(look at the wells fargo sign).
If you want to get into photography, go get a dslr like Blizzie recommended. A good entry level is a canon Rebel XS. I think BestBuy has a deal with camera and 2 lens for like $700. I highly recommend a tripod too.

    Here's the deal:  http://www.bestbuy.com/si...skuId=9999128200050001

As for post-editing them, it could probably be done but there is alot of noise in the images in the black areas.

Nice job, I love the black and white how it left only the blue... It looks really nice.

I think mine counts as a point&shoot, Olympus Stylus, but it can take UNDERWATER PICTURES!! *ooooooooohhhhhh*
For example here's me playing in the air under a heating blanket in the pool after practice:

first when you take a pic you also have to use a good software to work with it. even a mediocre  pocket cam can yeild good results if you know how to work out the details.. here is a link that I started out with that has helped me.. also get a dslr camera, as they have more formats to work with.. you can work with  Gimp as a free starter software..

Their grainy.  which has been said.  I use a tripod at night.  Use ISO 100 and longer shutter time along with a wider aperature.  Not sure about your set up.  A wider aperature will also give you a narrow depth of field.  If you want your car and the back ground in resonable focus, then use a smaller aperature - less light, and a longer shutter time.  This will give you a deeper depth of field.  You have to have a tripod and possibly a trip wire for the shutter.  You want no shake.  Might set the auto timer so that your hand is not on the button when the shutter is tripped.

remember to keep the subject close and noticeable.

your photos would look nice at a low aperture, but its a point and shoot.

look at these two unedited pics  I took, one with a kodak 8.1mp pocket cam and the other  a Nikon D90

    kodak

D90> P.A.L.  soccer camp photo shoot for video slide show.

    a little closer
both are unedited, the one with the turtle is close-up, while the one with the D90 was taken  using the zoom lens. dont let anyone tell you different about mega-pix, the more mega-pix the more vibrant the colors from a longer distance when you zoom. here is a tip always keep the light in your back and on the subject and take multiple pics from different angles then choose the best one to work with.

It appears you were using a slow lense for the D90.  My dad bought a huge $2300 telephoto fast lense for his and the quality is unreal.  We had a lense like you were using on the bottom photo and it has a tough time focusing especially when used to capture sports photos.

I had just bought the d90 like two weeks before and was still getting the feel for it. had a lot more features than i anticipated, but now  i'm kinda used to it and the settings in different scenarios and lights. I chose the second pic to show the color and the distance was mentioned. the lens is the regular one 18mm.55mm that comes with the package bundled, now i'm looking to get a more professional lens for wider angles and longer distances.. I'm learning as I go along so far its a hobby for me not anything too serious..

For real shallow depth of field and surreal potraits, use a 50mm f1/4.

As far as i remember, for Nikon, the best wide angle lens is the 12-24mm. (the Tokina 11-16mm is said to be better) But i could be wrong since i dont have a DSLR :-)

And i have to disagree with the megapixel thing. More megapixels means more pixels on a surface, thus more noise. More megapixels only come to play when you blow up the picture for a big print and/or for pixel peepers.

Example, the canon 5d mark 2 which has 21mp and is said to be the best in the low light category isnt as good as the nikon d700 which has less mp and better low light performance. Same goes when you compare the canon 1d mark 4 anf the nikon d3s. The d3s just kills it in very aspects. But megapixels are useful for magazine photogs and ad shooters. The ones who shoots photographs for billboards and stuffs.

(Im not a nikonian nor a canonion. I just read the camera news everyday. :-) )

I love taking pics, and my family is very large and scattered all over the globe. the reason I got the D90 is for those precious moments when my kids are growing up, school functions, birthday parties, family re-unions,  graduations, marriages, sports events, dancing, swimming, ect. i needed a better camera than the regular pocket cam. This  is what stirred my senses and kicked started my hobby. now i do photostories for friends and family for a small fee and sometimes i even upload photos to my kids elementary school that they can use on their website and magazines whenever they have a function. also I find that using certain jazz or instrumental music with pics get people to watch/like your work more as the mood is supbtle and relaxing. +1 for those treasured memories..
