Thinking of X79 or Z77. Can one disable Intel HD Graphics?

I am looking at upgrading from my X58 with X79 with 6 core or Z77.  My laptop has switchable graphics and I really don't see the need on a desktop.  Is there a way, in the bios, to disable the Intel graphics chip?

Thanks

The X79 series does not have onboard graphics. The Z77 should have a BIOS option to disable the onboard graphics if you are using a discrete video card.

Except for the 6-core option, the only real difference between the two is PCIe lanes and thus the types of graphics cards you can get as long as you own the system.  One is more future-proof than the other, you just have to decide on your cut-off

If you plan on up to two of the best cards out now, then Z77 is good enough, but if you intend on more or just plan to upgrade again to the next year's set of cards and the year after, then X79.

Intel deliberately separated the two chipsets into competely different sockets in order to separate folks who tend to get multiple graphics cards from the rest.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

I currently have one GTX580 SC.  Plenty enough for me.  Perhaps a 690 or a 700 series down the road, but this card has served me extremely well for a year now.  Two card SLI...Z77...more than that...X79...

If your going evga I would not consider x79 what so ever. Go with a different brand or z77.

For X79, this motherboard caught my eye.  I have owned Asus in the past.  Only reason I don't now is because I own EVGA.  This looks solid for X79

For z77 it will only be the EVGA,

    Any thoughts on these???

Bob - I have a X79 SLI running a 3820 at 4.75 GHZ rock solid.  When you match that Performance with EVGA's - Proven - Industry Leading Customer Support - It's A Simple Choice.  EVGA did have some Bios problems on their X79 Series - but those are sorted now.  Do a google search of Asus Customer Support - Once complete you will no longer want anything to do with them.

I own mostly EVGA right now.  X58 (which I am probably going to give to my wife.  Her old Asus P5E is really starting to slow down).  I have three EVGA Video cards and more.  I have dealt with their Customer support...and that is why I will always come back.  I am beginning to lean to z77 FTW, frankly.  I like Asus, as well...and always had decent luck with their support...but EVGA is so far above the rest...that is why I will most likely wait.  Not sure about X79 a reasonable cost measure.  The more I configure it...the more expensive it gets.  If I am gonna do X79...jump into six core...why not?  Really interested to see if Intel will release an Ivy Bridge Extreme series, like they did with Sandy Bridge.

Not until 2013.  Others have pointed out that they might just jump to Haswell- E.  Who knows?:)

Can't go wrong either way if running 1-2 cards.  However if you are running more than 2 graphics cards, the only answer is X79 imho.

Only running ONE right now.  Was thinking of two...pretty much it, though, for me.  Don't see the need for more than SLI with two cards, if that.

    So your choices are:
    3820 on X79
    3930k on X79
    3960k on X79

    OR

    3750k on Z77
    3770k on Z77

What is your budget?  What are you using this computer for?  I mean, no need for 6 cores if you are gaming, right?

^^^ Precisely - EVGA really puts forth a lot of effort towards customer support.  I'm not sure when, but at some point in became fashionable to support and recommend Asus Products in the EVGA Forums - that's a bunch of non-sense.  And now that EVGA has the bugs under control - It's Time To Stop.

Also, as mentioned X79 will be supported longer.  That combined with Ivy Bridge not being the best for overclocking (For Air & Water Anyway) have me convinced X79 is what you want.

Mainly video encoding (transfer of old movies to DVD and Blu Ray)...moderate gaming...the E758 with i7 950 has served me very well.  My wife gets into more and more Photoshop, etc...and her old 775 platform is slowing down.  That is really the machine I am upgrading.  I am trying to budget for a new case, mb, processor, memory and PSU.  Looking at $1200 or so.  I don't mind increasing the budget.  Has to be really worth it.

I have a Sandy Bridge laptop (HP Envy 17 3D) and I really like USB 3.0 and some of the perks of the machine.  z77 has USB 3.0 native and PCIE 3.0 for future growth.  It was the year for me to upgrade that...so that is where the largest part of my budget went to.  In comparision, my E758 with GTX 580 SC scores well into the 7000 range on 3DMark 11.  My laptop does 2033.  For a laptop, not bad...BUT!  lol

Yeah, it looks like even with lower voltages to achieve higher clocks, IB still generates MORE heat than the others (say 2600k or 3930k) at higher voltages!
IB is far from a flop..it's a wonderful platform but for OC'ers, I would rather keep X79.

With a quad core...much more affordable.  Guess I had myself convinced that if X79 was for me...I would splurge and go Six cores....but as previously stated to me...not necessarily the best choice for me.

Not recommending Asus at all.  Believe me...I am very very familiar and even more comfortable with EVGA.  They have taken care of me over the past four years.  I have been here since my old 8800GTS 640 days.  I purchased the E758 the day it was released and never looked back.  There were bios issues and USB issues with this board.  Had it replaced three times...Jacob finally send me a newer build and never crashed again.  Only reason that I mentioned the boards I did...my older P5E has been in service for about six years...one of the first quad core CPU (Q9450) and I think it's time is coming.  Was maybe getting too price consious

JFrizzle is indeed amazing. It's true he does care, has a great unassuming disposition and is extremely helpful. Steve, Rob, Joe, Shane and the rest of the gang at EVGA are stellar folks in all. Exactly the reason why EVGA is a top tier end card manufacturer with unsurpassed technical support.
