I guess I can write up my experience with Linux.

I've been using Linux on all my home computers for a few years now. I've been using both Fedora and Debian. Both are fine, I'm somewhat more used to Debian. Ubuntu is probably great too, I just never tried it. Colleagues have used Manjaro and Arch with good results. My main use case is programming and a bit of this and that. There's a few developer tools and toolchains that are just more at home on Linux than on Windows(and vice versa of course).

I use i3wm on all my Linuxes, it's the first thing I install. Before that I tried a few other tiling window managers, but i3wm was the first that works great out of the box. If Windows had i3wm I wouldn't have minded Windows so much, I think.

Ditto at work, I've been using Fedora and Debian there as well. Work is generally a Windows shop, for good reasons. To get around the "Windows only"-policy we talked a manager into letting us use Linux on our desktops as an "experiment". He left the company years ago, but we keep the experiment running. As long as we just figure out stuff by ourselves IT doesn't cause a fuss. They're tech people, they administer Linux servers, they run Linux at home, they like Linux. They just don't want to support some user who complains about not being able to print from his desktop that he's not maintaining properly, running God knows what distro, with God knows what unpatched security issues.

As for gaming, while you can game on Linux(and I do), I wouldn't really recommend it. On an older box I took the trouble of installing a Windows VM(very easy), passing the GPU directly from the Linux host to the Windows VM(pretty tough setup and you need two GPUs, but worked very reliably once it was up). Dual booting is probably the simplest solution for gaming.

Running Ubuntu, it is not like it used to be pretty easy drivers are good. Takes little getting used to the terminal that you need every now and again and installations can be tricky but otherwise rock solid experience with Linux.

That only used to be true, but anyway how about that dual boot. Ubuntu running like a dream.

Excellent post. I've often thought of trying Linux but have never taken the dive due to stores of poor driver and software support.

If only more games would support Linux. I know a lot should be possible using Wine etc, but still doesn't feel like the best experience.

That's what's always prevented me from switching.

linux is still too heavily dependent on the user understanding the base sub system to get things done. There is an app store, there are gui's for most applications, but you are still somewhat reliant on navigating around with terminal to work out "major" problems.  Thats why i feel its not mainstream yet.

Proton and SteamPlay are getting pretty good. The situation is much better today than it was a few years ago.

Ubuntu has really come along. It's my preferred work surface when I'm writing. Totally customizable.

A friend recommended me POP! OS, since it apparently comes with all the GPU drivers and everything. Anyone got experience with that distribution?

Well folks I think its time for some of you to try linux again.
Its gotten so much better at driver support and you can do most everything via a GUI.

Really we only use the terminal as its the linux swiss army knife and its easier to refer to it than say "click here, click that click this, check that, hit okay"

Linus Tech did a very long video on this OS and even at this time games are still not completely working with it.
Great video with tons of info.

Agreed. For gaming Linux is pretty much a no-go and will continue to be that way for a while if you want to play most of the popular games these days. Consider using Windows Subsystem for Linux on Windows 10/11 to be able to run a Ubuntu/Fedora/etc environment from within Windows. It's great for software dev, and then I use Windows for everything else including gaming.

As Smiley104 pointed out in this thread, gaming on Linux has come a long way and it's actually really good now.

I've used Linux for a couple of decades and gaming was always something that came up short. I remember being excited that one game I loved, Dying Light, actually had a Linux port on Steam. So I would alternate playing a session under Windows and then under Linux. I remember being excited that all progress was shared. However, if you searched for games on Steam that supported Linux, the list wouldn't be very long.

Then the Steam started the Proton project, and I've been amazed playing at least my Steam games which never had an official Linux port, (like the Fallout series), under Linux using Proton. In fact when I played Dying Light using Proton, and compared it with the native Linux port, I liked the Proton playing experience better. (If I remember correctly the sound was better under Proton)

Gaming has gotten so good under Linux, I'm seriously considering my next system build to be all Linux, (or Linux dominant), and looking to spend most of my gaming time under Linux. (I've got a lot of system building to do first, so it'll be ways off before I have to decide the exact layout).

P.S. I don't have the account status to post links so if you do an internet search for Proton you should be able to find the Protondb website easily.

As a longtime Linux admin, I never really had faith in the desktop until the last few years.  I decided to give it a try again, this time full-time, after having the Z97 Intel Management Engine BSOD issue - (forum blocked the link to the EVGA Z97 Classified/Stinger issue)
I've since moved to newer hardware and haven't looked back.  For gaming I still use a Windows VM with GPU passthrough though, it is just "easier" then trying to shoehorn games into Linux.   I ran into an issue with Horizon Zero Dawn using Proton, fiddled for a while, and then did the full VFIO treatment.  Really pleased, only downside is that I have three GPUs in my machine now - 6700XT drives the desktop, 3080 for gaming VM, and a 3050 that I'm trying to step-up to a 3060 ti or 3070 for messing around.
