So I found this car on CL and I managed to get it, there was 4 familys there trying to haggle him down under 2k and I walked up and said "Enough games, 2k cash money right now, lets go" and he told everyone to have a good day and let me buy it LOL. It's interior is actually in extremely good shape too, which surprised me.

Anyway, it has it's issues, as follows:

Car rear ended a truck and broke the headlight, was replaced but, extremely bad job and need to fix this.

Has a wing (ewww).

Electric mirror on the drivers side doesn't work.

It has a disgusting, loud ricer muffler on it, will be getting this removed soon.

And last but not least, something I need your guys help with, it's leaking oil, and I can't seem to figure out from where. I knew it was when I bought it, but the car made it up a 2 mile 6% grade so obviously it's nothing serious, it's just a leak. Any, and I mean ANY help on this would be greatly appreciated, I'm going to continue to drive the Green Goblin until I get this small issue fixed, but until then it stays parked.

Pics below of the car and the oil leak. It's just under the upper radiator hose.

From what I have read, the 3 main culprits would be a valve cover gasket, head gasket and distributor. If I'm wrong let me know but, yea. They are all 3 pretty easy to fix if memory serves me right.

Also guys, I drive for economy, not speed(that's what the mustang is for), I have been looking for an HX for over a year now, they hardly pop up on the market because most of them have either been wrecked or ricered, and what ones that haven't been molested out there people refuse to sell because they are so rare. The engine (under certain conditions) shuts down 2 valves per cylinder, and skyrockets MPG. Makes it a 8 valve engine instead of a 16.

Take it to the car wash and blast it, then you should have a better idea where the leak is.

You must leave the fart pipe and wing on the vehicle, those are the rules of owning a Honda. Besides it makes it go fast!

I hope it's a good car for you, and lasts a long time.

What's a good degreaser to use? And yea the car has 198k miles, but it's completely unmolested engine-wise so, I'm cool with it.

And Fordman, of course! how could I be so foolish, of course the fart pipe makes it go faster! I can't even drive the thing for a long period of time without getting a headache :P.

A lot of times if the car wash has an engine cleaner it works pretty well. Let it sit for a few then blast it real good. Try to get underneath too, because the undercarriage is more than likely nasty with an oil leak. Hopefully maybe it's just the oil sender switch leaking.

Kram, the HX's are very rare (only 5% of honda 97 civics have this motor), before this one I missed another one with a blown head gasket that was bought for 1300. They have the rare and extremely sought after D16Y5 V Tech-E motor with lean burn. I have been looking for one for over a year, they rarely ever show up, let alone in this condition.

It's something else higher up, and it's leaking mildly, there was drops on the ground under the car today after about 30 hours of sitting. I'm gonna take it to my friend that's a mechanic tomorrow and have him look at it. I know it's not a blown head-gasket or anything serious, as the car drove up a 2 mile stretch of 6% grade, in stop and go traffic, by someone who doesn't really know fully how to drive a stick.  It's probably either the distributor, or the valve cover gasket. Even the head gasket isn't that much to get replaced.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. I was like ok maybe it has a lot of high end parts on it or something. It's crazy how much people will pay for high mileage Hondas and Toyotas. Does the A/C work?

a few things, that motor doesn't shut off 2 valves to save mileage. the v-tec E it does have is just a variation of normal v-tec minus the third lobe and rocker. 1 valve just opens more then the other and works on both intake and exhaust, other early v-tec systems only worked on the intake side.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VTEC the read.

more then likely your oil leak it the Honda warped head/head gasket issue, don't bother to fix it unless it pouring out. to fix it properly you need to deck both head and block and all new head gasket and bolts. 95% of sohc motors leak in that corner/side when they get high miles and have been cooked a few times. if you want to slow it down some add lucas oil stabilizer. if it's just the distributor that's just a simple o-ring. valve cover takes 5min. rtv sealant is your friend on the corners of the valve cover.

2k for a roller civic is fairly cheap, around here they can still go for over 5k. krams just a Japanese car hater and doesn't understand what a good fuel efficient car is worth.

But why would you spend 2K for a car that has problems and at 200K miles on the motor? The motor is pretty much on its last leg ESPECIALLY if the previous owner(s) did not take care of it properly. I can understand spending 2K on a American classic car if your planing to do a restoration. Anyways if you want to get a good fuel efficient car thats not a hybrid and that is not a diesel, get a skyactiv Mazda 3 or 6.
But hey good luck with your car Balto and I hope you enjoy it.

I think your used to American cars :P. Honda/Toyota Engines last forever as long as you keep oil in them and don't drive it on a blown head gasket.

I don't hate Japanese cars. I'm a fan of several models, NSX, Supra, RX-7. I would own any of those. That fuel economy savings is out the door at this point. The car is just going to nickle and dime him with repairs and negate the fuel savings.

I was just naming a few off hand. I like your new ride, the 370Z, beautiful lines on that car. The GT-R of course too. Toyota/Lexus are not pleasing to my eyes right now. Mazda, I like the Miata. Been a few Mitsubishi's I have liked over the years. Matter of fact I bought my daughter a Eclipse Spyder GTS.

Parts are so cheap for that body style that it will literally cost nickles and dimes. A complete brake job for that car is $50, i can get whole suspensions for $100... complete rim and tire sets for $200... the whole point is everything with these cars are cheap. And even @ 200k that motor will run fine even with the oil leak and still get 40mpg easy.

wrvert, I'm getting 42 at 60 with old spark plugs, the damage on the front, low air in the tires and old oil haha. I love this car <3. And guys, I DO want to restore this car, you guys forget I have a Mustang that's a project car as well? I'm gonna be selling my Corolla soon, and that plus my car accident settlement is plenty enough to restore both. Also, I went a mechanic friend of mine, head gasket+valve cover gasket+one other thing I forget he said he would do it, parts and all for 500 so yea. There really isn't anything else it could be.

P/S the a/c works awesome, blows so cold I can't keep my hand in front of it while driving

P/S/S. This is my dream economy car, it still looks 'styleish' I didn't pay out the wazoo for it, and it's going to teach me how to drive a stick. For 2k? And then maybe 700$ for all repairs to get it to where I want it, isn't bad at all.

If hes doing the head gasket do the timing belt if it has any cracks in it and water pump also. Make sure he uses new head bolts, they are stretch to yield and only good once.

Awesome car. A little leaking oil and only 200k, that is a great deal. I sold my '99 Civic a few years back with 320k km's on it. I ran into the same kid I sold it to and he still loves it and it has over 420k on it now. Nothing like a Honda engine for longevity. A little leaking oil is nothing to worry about. If doing head gasket as mentioned do the timing belt and water pump at the same time.

Yea I'm definitely gonna do the timing belt, never really thought about the water pump but I'll definitely do that as well. I don't mind sinking another 1.5-2k into this car to get it running as it did in 1997 when it came off the line, as I know these cars run forever.

[Edit]: Kaninja that doesn't sound out of the ordinary lol, I have a friend at work with a 1992 Honda civic (forget the trim, I think it's the LX or EX) and she has 330k on the motor last time I asked, and that was 2-3 months ago.

I thought your Mustang was your project car and you bought this to save on fuel? So if you sunk 2k of the 4k you're spending into the Mustang and used the other 2k plus cost saved on one less car to insure, how many years would it take for the fuel savings to show saved money?

Here is the thing, I spent 4k on the Corolla I have right now, I figure if I sell the Corolla for 3.5k which I will be able to, I can put 1.5k into the Mamba, which I don't think it needs that anyway, then I can put the rest into the Mustang. This way when I get my settlement, I can pay my parents the money I owe them, then put some away for future stuff, therefore I have 2 working cars, and everyone is happy.
