Will laptop makers ever get it?  Why have they locked us in to CPU and graphics cards.   When you buy a $500 laptop, I get it...but with prices today... no one is buying them like throw away device anymore.  I recall the Mobile Turion(?) days, when I could upgrade my CPU at least.  Oh yeah, and I also have a very VIVID BAD memory when my GE-FORCE GO bit the dust and was not replaceable.  Hard pill to swallow when your whole laptop becomes unusable for an NVIDIA product that is stuck in the motherboard and not in warranty.  $1000 of 2010 money ...gone in trash after less than 2 years.

You can still buy laptops with swappable desktop CPUs. You can buy laptops with MXM mobile graphics cards. You'll be spending well north of 3,000 (more likely 4 to 5 grand) for a laptop that supports that. Sadly, upgradability is still limited by what the laptop manufacturer white lists within the BIOS (some programmers edit custom BIOSs that you can pay for).

Cheap laptops have soldered on GPUs and CPUs.

You would need to have some serious soldering skills to remove the cpu and gpu.

This. And most people who buy laptops don’t care enough to want to swap out anything, which gives no incentive to make it easy to swap out parts.

Why have they locked us in to CPU and graphics cards.

Total size, total thickness, electrical connection reliability, and ability to spread heat throughout the PCB are the primary reasons that they solder the CPU and GPU onto the motherboard.  Forced product upgrades is an added benefit for them, but is not the only reason.

If you look at laptops with upgradeable CPUs and GPUs, they are big and thick.  It's not a coincidence that they aren't smaller and thinner.

If you want a laptop with upgradeable CPU and GPU, look at Clevo laptops.  Clevo makes them, but they have models sold under a bunch of different brands including Sager, XoticPC, the old Alienware models, OriginPC, Eurocom, and a bunch of other brands.
