Looks good.

Just installed the new card. Wow, my case seems empty with the Tri-SLI GTX470's pulled. I think it was prime time to update though because if I wait much longer the GTX470's won't be worth much in the marketplace. I definitely got my use out of them on my Surround setup though.

Not really a user's computer but just noticed today watching the anime Sword Art Online that he's a triple-head gamer too. The anime is available for viewing over at Hulu or Crunchyroll for free.

I dusted off my old forum profile for this post. It's been awhile people. (Where'd my blue ribbon go!?!) Anyway, I built my first Surround setup and I'm pretty happy with it. No other way to play BF3. Getting respectable FPS with the 690 and it's nice that I didn't have to rebuild my whole machine for Surround. Here's the rig:

I'm not real happy with the cable clutter, but it's not so bad as to hurt airflow. Not a completely modular PSU so not a lot I can do about it. My biggest regret is that the tower sits inside that hole in my desk. I have a window in my case so I'd otherwise be able to see the 690 glowing like the triumphant beast it is.

My new screen will arrive soon. I'm anxious to start using it in flight sims.
Not made up my mind if I'll do Eyefinity 5x1 or 3x1 projection on it. Largely depends on if I want to do 5 panel cube map or unwrapped fisheye mode.

Here is an example of 5 panel cube mapping:

What software is available to do either of these methods?  Do they work like a DirectX hack (similar to Flawless Widescreen or something to interrupt the calls), or is this custom development with the original flight sim vendor?

I'm also wondering about where the projectors would go - do you have them on a platform or something in the middle?  You're not projecting from the outside are you?

REALLY interesting set up, btw.

Primarily planetarium and flight simulation software. A few games also, but this is purpose built for flight sims. Actually, it IS rear projection. The material is specifically designed for rear projection. It's a prototype, so this is the initial iteration of it. A few more refinements will be made over the next few months of use.

It works with FSX, Prepar3d and DCS World at the moment. Also working with a few game devs on the side for it. Right now it's a personal project. TBD if this will become an actual product based on testing the next few months. Either way, it's highly specialized.

Oh yeah, I'd venture a guess that building a freaking HOLODECK is somewhat of a specialized set up.

Sheesh, I just got three screens going!

If you get this working as some manner of DirectX injection process instead of working directly with vendors...  Well then, I'm running to Home Depot to buy one of those gigantic snow globe yard ornaments, I'm going to chop out the snowman figure, and I'm going to take some screen paint to it.  I'm one minor suffocation incident away from having a Holodeck.  I'm pretty sure nothing could go wrong!

hehe, the thing has built-in circulation system. New air is constantly refreshing into it. I'm not sold on it ever being a product because you can't prevent stupid people from buying it. I don't like the liability of it. It'll definitely be cool as a personal build though. It's in transit from an OEM in China right now. I hope to have it in a few days.

You guys are insane!  And yes, I want to be like you.  Now my setup seems lame.  I had to install my third monitor with synergy and a linux server just so I could stop switching my monitor from computer to computer but now I want a full gaming setup.  I only play wow right now with an off the shelf computer.

Very nice....you brought the term bubble boy to a whole new level
Should be interesting with the 3:1 set up. Depending of the sphere diameter, it should work just fine, but 5:1 is for a large scale,  like a cube type of set up.
This sphere set up is aimed to flight simulations only right? or just in general?

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

It's a proof of concept build. Still determining if it should be 5x1 or 3x1. 5x1 is much more compatible with games as 90 degree cube maps can be done with multi-camera views for flight sims. When not in a sim specific environment I could run it with three projectors and do a regular Eyefinity/Surround with 2 of the projectors offline (top and rear projectors). From a hardware standpoint 3x1 makes the most sense because NVIDIA Surround and AMD Eyefinity can both use it. Problem comes into play that noone does the required equirectangular camera code that 3x1 sphere would need. I would have to convince 3d game engines to implement an alternate camera option in their SDKs. That is much harder to see done than just buying two more projectors and going AMD. At issue is I'd like to see this sort of setup work in a lot of future games. That's not going to happen without major support from someone like AMD. My AMD contacts are all but non-existent lately with the job turnover there. I used to be able to get things in at a driver level like 5x1 for instance. No such luck anymore.

Here's what I was thinking in regards to "hacking" this to work with multiple games -  Think OnLive + AfterEffects/Premier.  In such a scenario, you don't need hacks in the program itself at all, if a bit of lag is bearable (processing time).

So the way this would work is you would run the graphics at an FOV of 360 on one machine, with a streaming software running, and then on the destination computer(s), you'd run a warping filter on the video that was output in this stream.  You might have to run 3 streams to 3 destination computers, to capture/display the three areas you're interested in warping, but hey - you've already purchased a massive bubble and a bunch of graphics cards anyway.

The trick (as far as I can see, the only complicated trick) is to find something that can warp a movie, the way you want, in real-time.  A quick search seems to show that something like this might be a step in the right direction.  EDIT:  Oh, wow - projection domes are way more common than I thought!

You might also in this instance have a minor loss in fidelity or some artifacting, but I'd think that'd be acceptable.

It'd be pretty cool if you could hook up DLP Link 3D in a dome scenario btw.

Hey, are you getting the Oculus Rift? That qualifies as "surround " right?
