Owned Computer almost one year.

EVGA z690 Dark Kingpin
i9 12900k
Ryuin ii 360 aio
96 gig g.skill 6400
Rtx MSi 4099 suprim x
1300 watt EVGA gold PSU
980 Samsung 2tb
1tb crucial nvme

Saturday at about 5 get up from game go to restroom come back alt tab to YouTube screen frozen still hear audio.

Turn off PC. Get stuck at motherboard splash screen, reset two more times. Get there is a problem with windows prompt. So I attempted win10 fix. Get to desktop have freeze.

Power on three more times, windows prompt again telling me there is a problem with windows. Attempt reinstall. Get into desktop all my background is gone and my icons get about as far as mobo drivers maybe graphics driver but then black screen.

Sunday/today I try a new nvme drive I have meant to install a WD black 4 TB. So open up PC I stall another nvme drive and attempt another windows install.
Get through installing motherboard drivers and Windows updates. Staring to believe was an issue with the other nvme. Then I install Nvidia GeForce experience and start graphics driver, at some point here get black screen.

I have tried to boot into desktop half dozen times now on the fresh brand new out of box WD black nvme and no dice. Every three boot attempts get prompt issue starting windows ect.

I tried even my old 32 gig kit of RAM, nope.
Tried a another bios slot number 3 still have factory version on that one. Even did cmos reset just in case.
Can't get past the splash screen but ya there seems to be exception and the PC just freeze or whatever.

Help appreciated.

Maybe I could ask a question.

    Alright so,

I figured out how to disable 2 of my 3 nvme drives.

Now the bios saw my 980 Samsung nvme as the boot drive, and at the save and exit tab it said past tense
    Boot override " Samsung 980"
    Well now it's blank.

I figured that as the other two drives are disabled now when I put the windows boot media in it would I stall to my WD Black SN 850x 4 TB nvme drive.

    So I go to reset,
Get to the part where I have to select the partition and nope.
Get error code so search it up on my phone turns out that error code says drive not selected as boot drive in Bios.
When I do a search on boot drive, it's all about pushing plus minus keys and moving around the darn boot options but nothing about it seems to be what I am looking for.

So how do I make it the boot drive in Bios?

    Hey thanks for reply.

Last night spent an hour trying to figure out what I had done.

So basically even though I had installed a WD black nvme, never went into bios to mark it the boot drive at bios level.

Did not figure out.how to get the bios to do that last night before I went to bed so get to work.

So whole time I was messing with it, the PC was likely reinstalling windows to my 980 Sammy.
I don't want to format my old boot drive it has mods for Skyrim and fallout 4 I have not uploaded or backed up anywhere.

So I have not been able to rule out yet that a fresh installed boot drive with win 10 would or would not just fix the issue.

    Edit,

So when I am able I gotta figure out how to mark the WD black as a boot drive, in bios
(This part I am hung up on)

Insert windows media, boot up and run the win Install media format the new drive
(It would not install win 10 because it says not recognized as boot drive error code had to look it up on my phone)

Then I stall the win 10 to new drive

    -----------------------

So far I think the way to get there is to maybe remove the other two drives leaving only the WD Black.
    Then boot into Bios
In Bios I have to figure out how to mark the drive as a boot drive.
After that I should be good to go right?

Not sure how I got past this a year ago when I first put this together, got lucky I guess.

    Gamefever,

when installing a fresh OS -- regardless of whether ur building from scratch or the PC is already assembled -- always be sure there's only one drive, keyboard, mouse, and LCD screen. (disconnect all peripherals, and only after the fresh OS is installed and working properly, reconnect one peripheral at a time; config its driver and test.)

it's easy to overlook ^^ after building a PC.

    Bee Dee 3 Dee,

Oh thanks ya I didn't realize that, and was in a bit of shock at first.

When trying to make the new boot drive I had all the drives installed and most all periphals were plugged in had a headset blue tooth jack in back USB port.

I wonder if that all it got in the way of bios an trying to identify the new nvme as the boot drive? Well probably I seem to remember someone saying better off having only boot drive disk physically installed.

eliminating and reducing possibilities is always helpful.

as for BIOS identifying boot drive... with only one drive u should be ok.

I installed WD black sn850x by itself.

I could not figure out how to get the bios to detect it as a boot drive and the windows media was not kicking off.

    Took out the WD,
    Put in the Sammy 980
Now in bios it sees sam 980 pro as windows boot drive.
    Great
Put in windows boot media go to a this PC/device needs repair screen.

Not the win 10 install screen was seeing on Sunday?

if you have the new drive installed, can you get into the windows installer media? Does it see the new drive to install Windows on?

Also, in your BIOS, under the BOOT tab, do you have boot mode select set to "UEFI"? You can do that, then in the save and exit tab you can click on the USB media you have the Windows installer on to boot directly to that from BIOS, just an option to get there without trying to change it to the first boot option in the BIOS.

    Yup did uefi,

Trying legacy mode right now though.
I'm at the windows installer, got a fresh media online from another computer just a few minutes ago.
The WD black has three partitions but none of them allow me to advance the installation process.
Partition 3 says it's GPT partition style.

I'm calling customer support line at moment.

Hmm not sure how to start the media directly in bios?

Ok stopped sitting there looked up how to format the drive using dosprompt.
Says the end result is a partition labeled GPT!
So figured well, restart computer and get back into bios.
There switched out of legacy back to uefi.
Saw that the hard disk boot manager sees WD lack as a boot drive, how'd that happen.
Put media back into USB slot.
    Started win 10 install process.
    So far so good.

Hmm, I think it might be an issue with graphics driver or graphics card
Just blacked out during attempt to install Nvidia graphics drivers.
Did a reset three times brought up repair pro.pt and now back in windows at min resolution.

I can stop at a hardware store And pick up another HDMI cable.

After having some more time, think I need to check the "Riser" or rather take the riser out and plug the video card directly into the motherboard.

I have looked at the card visually on exterior and parts I can see look mint no burns or melted wires/plastic.

Also I'm trying to get into contact with my neighbor down the street to see if he would plug the graphics card into his computer to check an see if it is an issue.

If it turns out the GPU is issue well I registered it with MSI a year ago so just have to figure out rma process with them.

Case is a Hyte Y60, I use AIO and the GPU is AIO
The basement has large fans for intake and my GPU fans aio are intake as well.

Hyte Y60 has a riser that allows vertical mounting in front of the mobo. Thinking the riser is a point of failure I need to rule out of the problem here.

    Omg,

Dang it I know this post is going to jinx this but wow it's so pretty.

Plain ordinary windows 10 in 4k resolution.

Last I left my PC was getting hardware failure bluescreens. I guess it did install the graphics drivers and then black screened right there.

So after work I contacted my neighbor about dropping my 4090 in his machine but he just flat out said no I have paying jobs right now can't risk my PC not working sorry man.

Got back to the house, thought about how am I going to get this 4090 to fit into this motherboard horizontal in a Hyte Y60 case?
So at first I was going to just pull the whole thing apart and set up.a bench, but wow looking at the rats nest of cords an zip ties in the back got me off that idea fast.
So I just fed some cables through to the front for some play in the lines and I unscrewed the mobo from case gave me an inch. Slotted the card and turned it on.

Windows See's my rtx 4090 and no black screen or blue screen.

So that just leaves what to do about this riser that was working for a whole year before last weekend?

Did you do anything like even dust the system recently? Riser cables are very prone to be the cause of problems but it mostly happens when working on the system but can just happen regardless.

    @Hoggle,
Yes I have dusted the PC and checked vents at least couple times.

This evening, I tried cleaning the gold contacts on the riser with rubbing alcohol.
Then after that blue screen hardware error before windows.
Tried setting the PCLe slot from auto to gen4 and to gen3, also did not work.

Right now I'm about to change it up unmount mobo and make some space to directly ug the GPU it o mobo.

I had no trouble with this riser when I set up the PC and now that I have read about them I'm not confident in these as a part. Still tomorrow I am going to have a look at a replacement out in an order. Hyte y60 just cannot fit a horizontal MSi rtx 4090 liquid suprim x.

    Gamefever,

add "liquid" to "MSI RTX 4090 Suprim X" in ur sig. (MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X)

i purchased a MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X one year ago because several ppl on EVGA forums picked it (no mo EVGA cards boo hoo... serioulsy man! i've luved EVGA all around. especially their vid cards), and had to purchase a new case for it -- a new case for the 1st time in 14 years. i've luved my Cooler Master HAF X (942). (TechSpot Review) it's the best money i ever spent. got it the week they 1st started selling them. but the MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X won't fit without removing the HDD cage in my Cooler Master HAF X. and i've never used a Dremel Tool or anything to mod a case.

So i got a Cooler Master HAF 700 BERSERKER. After all the Cooler Master 942 lasted 14 years!

i still haven't moved my MOBO to the new case and installed my MSI RTX 4090 Suprim X; because i corrected a software problem that made all 1440p Gaming so perfect again and "real life" has made it impossible to do it. AND i haven't gotten around to upgrading my 1440p Alienware AW2721D monitor to a 4K QD-OLED. (These 2nd Gen QD-OLED reviews all say they ROCK! so i'll be getting one soon. 1st Gen didn't come in 27 inch flat screens and i didn't want a curved one anyways.)

GL with ur Riser prob. i'm skipping it but still very tempted.

    @ Bee Dee 3 Dee,

When I get back to the house I'll edit the sign so correct graphics card shows.

ATM I have my PC sitting naked out of case, waiting on a cable riser replacement to arrive.
Been slowly turning off every non sense win10 feature, it's taking time just getting all the stuff off there that I don't care for on my desktop.

Jumped right into cyberpunk to test performance ouch. Had to update it and the mods but at first was real shocked cause the game would suddenly freeZe every few seconds.

sounds like a clean video driver (DDU) is needed.

Well I was looking at it the other day when running Skyrim in 4k with all the bells/whistles.

At 100% load I saw the a range of 80-85c.
To be completely honest this room of the house does get AC but with the computer heating the room so bad I put a portable AC unit in there and run that pretty hard to keep the room comfy, sometimes gotta wear socks it can get chill. Other games it runs a cooler seen it hit my 144 frame cap an level off around 75C.

I put an order in for exact same riser from Hyte over the weekend. I did consider some other options but at the moment just want to get the PC back in the casing.

Also I just realized last night that those USB connection ports really matter had my mouse Bluetooth set up was behaving poorly .asking me think oh jeez what other serious thing happened.
Plugged the receiver into USB 3.0 red port in the back, blam mouse curser moving smoothly. It had been randomly jumping around, I tried driver updates and all sorts of fixes hunting down solution. Was just jacked into wrong USB port ><
