it also happened to me everytime i play fallout new vegas. i just re-start steam client and it goes back to normal again.

it happened to me. there's just one file on the game that needs to re-download for no reason at all. steam glitch i guess. i just re-start the client and it goes back to normal

I've had nothing but problems from Steam lately.  Only game that works is Metro 2033 that I downloaded last night.

Steam does this all the time with many games when the cache is verified. It often re-downloads the games main executable file. Not sure the reason, but it's pretty common and nothing I'd worry about if the game's launching fine.

just happened again with portal 2 as well. does this mean i need to redownload the game or just run it and see what happens?

It happens if the game has it's own external update mechanism too. If what Steam expects as current patch version and what the developer considers the current patch version are different, you'll get that with a verification check. It ends up being the Steam version is dated. Happens all the time with MMOs.

Try going into your main steam folder and delete ClientRegistry.blob
That will sometimes get steam back on track.

It happon to me with Grid butt I uninstalled it, then del all the old folder's stuff, saves and anything I could find to do with Grid. Then redownload it and reinstalled work's great so far.

i had this issue with crysis2
go to the steam folder,
right click make sure its unclocked and read only is NOT enabled.
if that fails go to the user/steamapps and do the same for the game folder.
the only other thing i can think of its anti virus. go to your anti virus settings and exclude the game folder
