Sony Takes a Step Backwards with PlayStation 5, Cuts on Cooling Capacity in the new Revision | TechPowerUp Sony's latest gaming console, PlayStation 5, has been selling at loss up until August 4th, when the company announced that the new console is now profitable. However, it seems like Sony is trying to extend those profits even further with the latest revision of PlayStation 5 that is seemingly taking a step backward. According to the latest report, Sony has updated its PlayStation 5 internal design and the console is now featuring a smaller heatsink, which you can see below. The new revision is featuring a significantly smaller heatsink and an abundance of the large copper cold plate. The fan that cools the heatsink is also reduced, resulting in a complete thermal downgrade. While there was no in-depth testing of the cooling performance, the exhaust system of the new PS5 revision is spitting out 3-5 degrees Celsius higher temperatures. That is just measuring the air coming out, where the actual SoC could run hotter by an even larger margin. As we wait for more testing of the new PS5 revisions, we have to wonder why Sony opted to cut corners on such an important piece, that ultimately provides the console with longevity, due to cooler silicon. This looks like a poor manufacturing decision in my opinion.

Interesting decision. If this increases the fail rate they might open themselves up for a lawsuit in the future.

Yeah I saw the video on Youtube - they mentioned that now Playstation 5 is profitable for the first time :)

The only step backwards for the PS5 I wanna hear is playing PS3 games and removing that CMOS nonsense.

Its possible that they changed the tdp or have a more efficient heat pipe... right?

If the system happened to be working under the same load with the same performance and generating the same total amount of heat. . . Couldn't an increase in the exhaust temps indicate better performance (more heat exiting the case)? Guess that probably depends on a LOT of other things like how comparable the CFM of the fans are. I'm still more worried about how hot some of that memory gets. Here's to hoping Gamers Nexus or someone similar gets their hands on one of these revisions for another in-depth test and review. Gotta know if this revision should run without the side panels too

If it gets too hot, then they will know they made a mistake. Hopefully this was thought through.

It's a risk I imagine they believe was worth the change. Expelling more heat is just nonsense.

I guess it depends on a couple things first if any CPU or GPU chip changes happened. Second if they found that they offered overkill out of the gate and now are removing some of the excess to cut costs. Then finally if they are making up for less heat sink mass with more a fan pushing more CFM.
