I feel like Intel has now gotten to the point of releasing a new socket every time they sneeze.  Is it even worth waiting for 1700?  I read 1200 might only last 1 more generation, but I wonder what the chances are of the same happening to 1700.

Rocket lake S will top out at 8 cores and will be socket 1200. Then Intel will switch to socket 1700. Rocket Lake will be short-lived as it was just a fall back to get some new architecture out. Socket 1700 will launch in mid 2022, I have heard Intel will try to keep 1700 around a bit longer... supposedly.

It wouldn't seem so bad if AMD wasn't sticking with socket AM4 for so long and making Intel look bad... AM4 launched alongside Intel Z270, and Ryzen 5000 launching soon will still be socket AM4.

Edited typo meant 2022 not 2021

I got tired of AMD coming out with new sockets so much in the mid 2000s, and now look at intel lol.

yep, Ryzen 5000 will be the last AM4 socket CPU though. Socket AM5 will support DDR5 which is right around the corner, Intel Alderlake will support DDR5 also.

Rocket Lake is confirmed to be Q1'21 and Socket 1200.... therefore Intel is not going to launch a second desktop socket anywhere near then.

Since Rocket Lake is also confirmed for PCIe 4.0, safe bet that Socket 1700 is for the switch to DDR5. Which almost certainly means Q1'22 as DDR5 is expected to only just be kicking in by then.

And DDR5 is the big kicker.  DDR4 came out in 2014 and DDR3 in 2007.  Yeah DDR5 is about due. Maybe I'll get desperate and buy a used 1151 with an 8 core before 1700.  Thanks for the info all!
