I was having issues with long load times in FarCry4 so I decided to try and find out whats going on. After trying 100 different things, I finally decided to just wipe the SSD and try again. AFter doing this, I got S.M.A.R.T. error saying my SSD was having issues and I need to back up and replace! Following that error message, I immediately ran HD Tuner and checked the SMART logs, and this is what I see:

FWIW I also ran a check and didn't find any bad sectors, etc...

In any case, I swapped out the position of the SATA cables to different ports on the MB to see if that helped, after which I ran another benchmark and checked the CRC Error Count again. It increased by 2. THis is the first time I've encountered such a problem and am rather shocked that I could have an error like this on a basically brand new SSD. Any input would be very helpful!

TIA

P.S. In case you missed it in the picture, I'm running a 500GB Samsunf 840 EVO SSD. Non RAID config. I am also currently re-downloading FC4 to retest. I've run a few benchmarks (Including the one from Samsung) and the SSD seems to be performing withing spec regarding speeds.

EDIT: For some reason thats showing up really small. The error count reads "7971". With current being "92" and worst being "92" as well.

I should also mention its flagged as "attention" and not "warning".

Samsung software can mark them as bad.  Have you ran their Magician software? Version 4.5 (16.5MB)

Understood. The SMART feature under Sammy's Magician program shows the exact same information, except it just says "OK" under "status". Is there a different portion of this utility I should be checking?

Check your Firmware too. There is an update, on mine I'd check for an update but it would always claim it was the latest and greatest. It wasn't I had to go to the website and update.  Latest Firmware: EXT0CB6Q

I was JUST about to ask about this, since it seems the PRS program mentioned basically updates the firmware, while Samsung Magician tells me my firmware is up to date!

Not sure what the Firmware was before running the Performance Resto program, but it seems to be up to date now. I guess all thats left is to finishing downloading FC4 and see.

Thanks guy! I hope I dont need to RMA this thing...

Edit: Also turned on "Rapid mode" in the Magician software. Holy godballs! If the benchmark in the Samsung Magician program isnt fibbing, this just got a TON faster.

If those numbers are legitimate, it's no joke bloatware.

The performance restoration software IS the firmware update. If it went through that you needed the update.

Run crystal discmark or any of the other SSD performance software....I don't believe it's bloatware because they all give amazing results too. Too bad you can only run it on the OS SSD .....

Glad it's up and running normally, hope it was the cure and not just a band-aide!!

Are yoy sure about that? I'm using the 840 as a separate "games" drive. I have an older OCZ Vertex 4 as my OS drive. However the 840 still shows massive performance increases in benchmarking (with samsung's Magician) with RAPID enabled. Is this just an artificial boost I'm not realizing in actual use?

I don't think SMART specifies how big those "units" are, however I highly doubt it's TB.

    Wow, seriously?

Anyway, I believe you are looking at something else. We're discussing the number of error counts, and as such I'm quite certain there are no letters proceeding the numerals in that metric.

That said, perhaps you can show me how to properly read "GB written in front of the number", as I am failing to see this in any other category as well.

Their is no issues under Windows 7 All my Rigs are Windows 7.
Windows 8 has build in Trim in Defrag, Windows 7 Defrag dose not and auto defrag under Windows 7 dose not defrag SSD dives like Windows 8 will.
    This is all.

And Yes I know to do not Defrag SSD Drives. You Trim Them.

... and when did I say that the root of the problem is the number of writes?.

You cant see GB anywhere in the picture?. Good for you.

Too bad you can only run it on ONE SSD .

    Fixed it....LOL that's what I meant anyway.

    Perfect.

SSD's Have no sectors and therefore cannot be defragged.  If you do a defrag on one, you can mess the SSD something bad.  That's why they invented TRIM and Garbage collection!
